The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty coupe/convertible that belongs to the fourth generation of the Eclipse (2006-2012). Known for its sleek styling and aggressive stance, the Eclipse offered a distinctive alternative in the sports coupe market. Key trims included the GS, GT, and GT-P. When new, pricing ranged from around $19,000 to $28,000. Its head-turning design and available V6 engine contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse boasts a stylish design appealing to emotional buyers. The available V6 provides decent performance. While not the most reliable car, it can be a good value for budget-minded shoppers. The comfortable front seats are a practical advantage for daily driving. Some models also offer a premium sound system.

The Bad

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse has known weaknesses including rear visibility issues due to its design. Reliability can be a concern, with potential issues involving the engine and transmission. The interior materials are often criticized for feeling cheap. The rear seats are cramped and practically unusable for adults. Rust can be a factor in some regions.

What Problems Does the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is known for several frequently reported problems. One common issue involves the automatic transmission, where owners have reported rough shifting, slipping, or complete failure. Engine problems, such as oil leaks and premature wear, have also been noted, particularly in the V6 models. Electrical issues, including problems with the power windows, locks, and stereo system, are also common complaints.

Rust can be a significant concern, especially in areas with harsh winters or coastal environments. The undercarriage and body panels are prone to corrosion. Interior components, such as the dashboard and door panels, are susceptible to cracking and fading over time.

While specific recalls for the 2009 model year might vary depending on the source, it's crucial to check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Long-term reliability is generally considered below average compared to other sports coupes. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate some of these issues, but potential buyers should be aware of these potential problems.

How long will the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, longevity is highly dependent on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or transmission services will drastically reduce lifespan. Durability weaknesses include rust susceptibility, especially in northern climates. The interior plastics are prone to cracking and fading, detracting from the car's appearance over time. Engine and transmission issues become more prevalent after 10 years, potentially requiring costly repairs. Regular inspections and proactive maintenance are key to maximizing the car's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time, though it lacked some of the advanced driver-assistance systems found in newer vehicles. Standard entertainment features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary input jack. Higher trims offered an upgraded Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer, providing a more immersive listening experience. Navigation was available as an option.

Safety features included standard front airbags, side airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Stability control was available on some trims. However, it lacked features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning, which are common in modern cars.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA vary depending on the specific test. For example, the Eclipse generally received good ratings in frontal crash tests. It's important to consult the official NHTSA website for specific ratings for the 2009 model year. The lack of advanced safety tech is a consideration for modern buyers. Optional features included a sunroof and leather upholstery.

2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse ranged from around $19,000 for the base GS trim to approximately $28,000 for a fully equipped GT-P. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Eclipse has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and the brand's overall depreciation curve. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, service history, and whether it's a GS or GT model. V6 models tend to hold slightly more value. Low mileage and a clean title can also increase resale price.

2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for a sports coupe. Fuel costs vary; the I4 GS is more economical, while the V6 GT consumes more fuel. Maintenance can be expensive due to potential engine and transmission issues. Repairs can also be costly, particularly for specialized parts. Regular maintenance is essential to prevent major issues. Overall, ownership is not as economical as more reliable compact cars but not overly expensive compared to other sports cars.

2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse competed against rivals like the Honda Civic Si, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and Hyundai Tiburon. In terms of performance, the Eclipse GT's V6 offered decent power, but the Civic Si provided sharper handling. The Miata, a dedicated roadster, delivered a more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the Eclipse offered a reasonable set of amenities, but its interior quality lagged behind Honda and Mazda.

Reliability is where the Eclipse fell short compared to its Japanese rivals. The Civic Si and Miata are known for their dependability. Price-wise, the Eclipse was often positioned competitively. Alternatives include the Acura RSX (if looking for a more premium option) or a used Nissan 350Z for superior performance. The Hyundai Tiburon offered similar styling and features at a comparable price point, but also suffered from similar reliability concerns. The Honda Civic Si and Mazda MX-5 are generally better alternatives due to their superior reliability and driving dynamics.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Hatchback?

The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing style over outright performance or reliability. It's worth considering if you find a well-maintained GT model with a comprehensive service history. Avoid examples with rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is strongly recommended. Given its age and potential issues, it's best suited as a secondary car or a project vehicle. If reliability and performance are paramount, consider alternatives like the Honda Civic Si or Mazda MX-5 Miata. The lower price might be appealing, but factor in potential repair costs.

Great power, terrible AC & suspension

I have a 2006 Eclipse GT and love it, but it's near the end of its life so I wanted another. I got this 2009 with 80,000 miles. Fantastic car, great acceleration. Supposedly it was "Certified", but in my test drive I noticed the A/C light wouldn't stay on. I asked the dealer to fix it. He said A/C worked, but light did not. That's wrong. Module was bad. Worse, Mitsubishi discontinued and offered no solution, so I had to get one from a junk yard. Also, Right Rear Strut was improperly installed (dealer's fault, not car), and after a few months the left rear strut was also bad. Not the worst thing that can happen, but it's loud when I hit bumps. Anyway, the exterior design is dated, but the 3.8L engine is still terrific (accelerates very well off the light, even though this car weight 2 tons). That's the primary reason I bought a second one. They discontinued the GT about 10 years ago, but you can get them dirt cheap, however do NOT buy one of the ones with the smaller engines, they have no acceleration and there is no reason to get one. Oh, another thing. My 2006 is orange. Great color, but notorious for having the clear coat peel and bubble (skin disease). It costs over $5k to get it repainted with the same dealer color, and $2,500 to get it painted a stock color, so beware of the orange Eclipses.

Great little sports car.

I love my Mitsubishi. The only issue I have is due to its size, its got a lot of blind spots but otherwise its been a great car . It has virtually needed nothing throughout the 70 k miles Ive owned it other than regular maintenance like tires, oil etc. Nice looking, running, dependable car.

This car is reliable, fast, comfortable and fun.

The eclipse gt has been a pleasure to own. Has never given me any problems. It's fast. Beautiful eye candy. The exhaust sounds amazing. Too bad Mitsubishi no longer makes these.

Super Reliable Car

This car is by far one of the fastest cars I have ever driven. It will suck you back in the seat when you press the gas pedal and is a blast to drive. I have owned two Eclipses so far and they have never given me any issues or required anything other than routine maintenance. It's a shame Mitsubishi stopped making them.

Head turner sports car.

Good for city driving and smooth on the road. The best car I’ve ever own. It has a nice adjustable trunk space. I once bought a huge frame & was surprised that it fits in this car. Back sits are relatively spacious compared to other sports car.

Solid Car, but cant keep up with the modern car

Car is pretty solid overall. I enjoyed driving it around town, but on long cross country trips becomes a bit uncomfortable. I will say for the price its a fantastic car, but its a bit underpower performance wise compared to similar or other semi performance cars esp in the launch. And dont get me started on having 3+ people in the car. The car feels like its being dragged down considerably. Overal fantastic car to drive, but would definitely recommend some aftermarket.
