The 2005 Volvo S60 is a mid-size luxury sedan known for its safety, comfort, and understated elegance. Part of the first generation S60 (2000-2009), it offered a blend of Scandinavian design and practicality. Key trims included the base 2.4, 2.5T, and the performance-oriented T5. It stood out for its comfortable seats, robust build quality, and reputation for safety, making it a popular choice for families and those prioritizing a secure driving experience.

Performance is adequate, especially in the T5 trim, while the understated design offers timeless appeal. It provides a good value proposition on the used market.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2005 Volvo S60 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Volvo S60 often revolve around electrical systems. The Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) was a common issue in earlier model years, though some may have been replaced under a recall. ABS module failures are also frequently reported, leading to costly repairs. Climate control issues, such as malfunctioning blend doors or compressor failures, are also common. Suspension components, including control arm bushings and ball joints, tend to wear out over time, especially in regions with harsh road conditions.
Recalls for the 2005 Volvo S60 included issues related to the fuel pump relay and potential fuel leakage, as well as issues with the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Long-term reliability concerns often stem from neglected maintenance. Turbocharged models (2.5T and T5) require meticulous oil changes to prevent turbo failure. Check engine lights are common, often related to emissions control systems or sensor failures. Premature wear on brake components is also a reported issue. Overall, maintaining a Volvo S60 requires staying on top of scheduled maintenance to mitigate potential problems.

How long will the 2005 Volvo S60 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2005 Volvo S60 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 15-20 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, failing to address minor issues promptly, or skipping scheduled services will significantly reduce its lifespan. The engine and transmission are generally durable, but electrical components and suspension parts can be weaknesses over time. Rust can become a problem in colder climates with road salt usage. Keeping up with repairs will extend the vehicle's usable life.

I love my 2005 Volvo the guy that had it before me bought it new when he was 20 and he was 40 when he sold it to me cause he had to buy a truck for work and it's got 215000 miles and still runs great love it
DonVolvo
I loved everything about the car. But it is a 2005 and does not have the safety and navigation features my children tell me I need. (I'm 75.) Otherwise I would keep it.
JerHighPerformance
Best bucket seats Volvo ever made. High performance vehicle that provides comfort and great mpg. Super fun car to own with great reliability and handling.
Negative Owner Reviews
Car enthusiast
This car is the definition of awful, unsafe, and junk. I bought this car and within a week the radiator had to be replaced along with the starter. Then the interior started to fall apart with the rear door handle breaking off, and the dashboard pieces are rattling all the time. Then the sunroof began to leak along with a problem with the seat belt for the passenger seat. I took it to a volvo dealer and they were charging and outrageous amount to fix it. I'm glad this isn't our primary car, I drive a Jeep and it is rock solid for reliability and this volvo, even as a third car has been awful.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Volvo S60 came standard with a decent level of technology for its time, focusing heavily on safety. Standard features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and front and side airbags. Entertainment was provided by an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Optional features included a premium sound system, sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated seats.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern standards, but the S60 did offer cruise control as an option. A notable safety feature was Volvo's whiplash protection system (WHIPS) in the front seats.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally very good, reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. The S60 typically received high marks in frontal and side-impact crash tests. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2005, so while it was considered safe then, newer vehicles offer superior protection. Overall, the S60 prioritized occupant safety with a focus on robust construction and essential safety systems.

2005 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Volvo S60 ranged from approximately $27,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle, prices now typically range from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S60 has depreciated significantly due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's a sought-after trim like the T5. Cars with documented service records and in excellent condition will command higher prices. Location also plays a role, with demand potentially higher in areas with a strong Volvo following.

2005 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Volvo S60 is moderately costly to own in the long term. Insurance costs are generally reasonable, but fuel economy is average for its class. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, especially if repairs are needed for Volvo-specific parts or systems. Regular maintenance is essential to prevent costly repairs. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential electrical issues, suspension work, and turbocharger maintenance (on T5 models). It is not the most economical vehicle in its class, particularly considering its age.

Insurance for a 2005 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2005 Volvo S60 competed with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Acura TSX. In terms of performance, the BMW 3 Series generally offered a sportier driving experience, while the S60 T5 provided comparable power but with a more comfort-oriented ride. The Audi A4 offered similar levels of luxury and available all-wheel drive.
In terms of features, the S60 was competitive, offering a good mix of standard and optional equipment. Reliability-wise, the S60's reliability is generally considered good but can be prone to certain electrical issues, whereas the Acura TSX is often praised for superior reliability. The BMW 3 series can also have its own set of issues. As for price, the S60 can be found at a lower price point on the used market compared to the BMW and Audi, offering better value.
Alternatives to consider include the Acura TSX for its reliability and the Lexus IS for a balance of luxury and dependability. The Infiniti G35 can also be a good alternative, offering stronger performance for a similar price. If reliability is your top concern, the TSX is a better choice. If you want more performance per dollar, consider the G35 or a well-maintained S60 T5.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?

The 2005 Volvo S60 is ideal for buyers prioritizing safety, comfort, and a distinctive, understated design. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history. The T5 trim offers the best balance of performance and features. However, be prepared for potential maintenance costs and electrical issues. Ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Volvos. Avoid examples with high mileage or signs of neglect. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Acura TSX. A well-maintained S60 can provide years of reliable service, but it requires proactive maintenance.

Safe, fuel efficient, performance car.

Bought this turbo charged Volvo used. Previous owner took excellent, meticulous, care of it. Dashboard looked new, leather seats appeared rarely used. The exterior shined like a garaged, pampered, vehicle. It drove and felted like an almost new car. Glad I found it and did not hesitate to buy it!

Brembo brakes and a 5 cylinder turbo 300hp sedan

This car exceded my expectations, the adjusting suspension made it for me, with 3 diffrent modes comfort sport and advance, when i'm feeling risky I put the car on advance and it hugs the road like no other car I've driven before and for long trips I put it in comfort and it rides like a cadalic

I love this Volvo!

I have always had Volvo's. This S60 is a great car. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 on performance is that the turning radius is different from my 1998 T5 Volvo 780 (yes, I still have that one... it is a work horse!!!). The person that buys this car will get new tires and alignment, total window tinting (including clear on the windshield), new front brakes and tune up and it only has 125,000 miles! If you love this car half as much as I do you'll be in good shape!
