The 2014 Volvo S60 is a compact executive sedan that builds upon Volvo's reputation for safety and Scandinavian design. Part of the second generation (2011-2018), the 2014 S60 was available in trims like the T5, T6, and R-Design. Known for its comfortable ride, stylish interior, and focus on safety, it offered a compelling alternative to its German rivals. New, it ranged approximately from $33,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. Its emphasis on occupant protection makes it a popular choice.

Aesthetically, the Scandinavian design is elegant and understated. The S60 provides a sense of security and sophistication, appealing to those who value both practicality and emotional satisfaction in their vehicle choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 Volvo S60 include a relatively small back seat compared to some competitors. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer systems. Some owners have reported issues with electronic components. What Problems Does the 2014 Volvo S60 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Volvo S60 sometimes revolve around electronic systems. Issues with the Sensus infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times, have been reported. Some owners have also noted concerns with the climate control system. Oil consumption can be a concern with certain engines. Suspension components, particularly the front struts and control arm bushings, can wear out over time, leading to replacement.
Recalls for the 2014 S60 have addressed potential issues such as problems with the fuel pump relay (potentially causing stalling) and issues with the seat belt pretensioners. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be affected by consistent maintenance. Staying on top of scheduled services, particularly oil changes and fluid flushes, is important. Some owners have reported that models with the turbocharged engines can be more prone to maintenance issues as they age. The Drive-E engines introduced later in the model year are generally considered to be more reliable than the earlier inline-5 and inline-6 engines but may still exhibit issues common to turbocharged engines.

How long will the 2014 Volvo S60 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Volvo S60 can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10+ years of service. However, longevity depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, suspension components), and addressing issues promptly are critical. Weaknesses over time often manifest as electrical problems, worn suspension components, and potential issues related to turbocharged engines (e.g., turbocharger failure, oil leaks). Models with regular maintenance and careful driving tend to hold up significantly better.

I’ve owned my 2014 Volvo S60 T5 since late 2022 (roughly 2 years) and here’s my experience so far: Pros: -Superior safety; Volvo prides itself with fantastic safety ratings and constantly keeps the latest safety standards in mind when designing restraints and airbags. -Outstanding comfort; Hands down, most comfortable seats that I’ve sat in. Warmer weather oriented and has heated seats all around, heated windshield, and heated mirrors as standard. Suspension is butter smooth and interior is quiet with good tires. -Stylish Interior and Exterior; interior is luxurious and uses high quality materials. Entertainment features are tilted slightly towards driver and allow you to make decisions and hit buttons without having to look away from the road. Post-face lift model looks fantastic and eye catching and looks much better than the pre-face lift models in my opinion. The body panels feel sturdy and well built. -Performance and Fuel Economy; great performance and fuel economy for its class. I usually get around 17-19 city and 29-32 highway. It offers good economy for families and business workers that get to work via the highway. It can absolutely get up and move when you ask it to and can comfortably go 90-100+ with no issues. Cons: -Below average handling; the handling leaves a bit to be desired for the 2WD models. Definitely has quite a bit of understeer in the corners. It’s can also be a bit daunting to park due to its larger size. -Transmission bugs; the transmission is usually fairly smooth but tends to jolt when downshifting and when starting from a rest. From what I understand this is a common problem with Aisin transmissions of this era and can be fixed with a software update from Volvo. -Interior space; as with most sedans, the rear seats leave room to be desired. Most passengers will struggle with leg room. Trunk space is fine for airport trips, grocery runs, and light road tripping but is unsuitable for most moving and heavy lifting jobs. The Ugly: -Reliability; although this car has never broken down, left me stranded, or even had as much of a check engine light, the biggest killer is the oil consumption problem. This can cause a range of silent killers that usually don’t show up until they are catastrophic. The inline-5 engine in particular is greatly affected and is due to the lower oil control ring on the pistons to become clogged. This usually leads to the engine burning about a quart every 1K miles. This is not an easy fix and will require an engine rebuild. Volvo may offer an extended warranty for this problem but without a perfectly documented service record this service costs $5K. -Not DIY friendly (sometimes); for an at home mechanic, some tasks can be quite difficult to accomplish without special tools from Volvo. Standard issues like oil changes, brakes, and lights are easily accessible and straightforward to accomplish. More complicated issues such as suspension maintenance, coolant services, accessory belt maintenance, and problems related to the turbo can be difficult considering the complex nature of the car. Maintenance manuals are near impossible to find for free, however Volvo does offer a (pricey) subscription service to their in shop maintenance software. In summary, the 2014 Volvo S60 is a fantastic car for a competent car enthusiast who knows how to work on cars. Maintenance tends to be on the heavy side and weekly oil level checks are a MUST. This car is definitely not for anyone who doesn’t know much about cars or for someone who knows a trusty mechanic. It’s sporty, comfortable, reliable and safe if you know what you’re getting yourself into. Hope this helps!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Volvo S60 comes standard with Volvo's City Safety system, designed to mitigate or prevent low-speed collisions. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, a 7-inch Sensus infotainment display, and a sound system. Higher trims and option packages add features like a navigation system, premium sound system (e.g., Harman Kardon), adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear park assist camera.
The Sensus system allows control of audio, climate, and vehicle settings, but it can feel dated compared to modern infotainment systems. Optional features included heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and keyless drive.
In terms of safety, the 2014 Volvo S60 performed well in crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a Top Safety Pick+ designation. The available driver-assistance features enhance safety and convenience, making it a well-equipped vehicle for its time.

2014 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Volvo S60 ranged from approximately $33,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim and options. As a used vehicle, prices can range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, as with most vehicles in this class. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options (e.g., navigation, premium sound). Models with a clean title and documented maintenance history tend to command higher prices. The R-Design models often hold their value slightly better due to their sportier appeal.

2014 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Volvo S60 are typically moderate, similar to other vehicles in its class. Fuel costs will vary depending on the engine but are generally average. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than some competitors, particularly for the turbocharged engines and if repairs are needed at a Volvo dealership. Long-term ownership costs are moderate to slightly above average, due to potential maintenance needs. It is not the most economical car to own, but reliability can be improved with meticulous care.

2014 Volvo S60 Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Volvo S60 competes with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Acura TL. In terms of performance, the BMW 3 Series generally offers sharper handling, while the S60 prioritizes comfort. The Audi A4 provides a similar blend of luxury and performance. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers a more opulent interior. The Acura TL focuses on value and reliability.
Feature-wise, the S60 is competitive, especially in higher trims. Reliability can be a concern compared to the Acura TL or Lexus ES, which tend to be more reliable. Price-wise, the S60 is often slightly more affordable than the German rivals, especially on the used market.
Alternatives to consider include the Acura TL (for reliability and value), the BMW 3 Series (for sportier handling), and the Audi A4 (for a similar blend of luxury and performance). If safety is a top priority, the S60 is a strong contender. However, if reliability is paramount, the Acura TL or Lexus ES might be better choices. The Infiniti Q50 is another alternative, offering strong performance and value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Volvo S60 is a good choice for buyers who prioritize safety, comfort, and Scandinavian design. It's worth buying as a used vehicle, especially if you can find one with a well-documented service history. The T5 Drive-E or T6 Drive-E engines (introduced later in the model year) are generally preferred for their blend of performance and efficiency. Avoid neglected examples with high mileage and questionable maintenance. If you can find a well-maintained S60 with the features you want at a reasonable price, it can be a rewarding purchase. The Premier or Platinum trims offer a good balance of features and value.

Happy I looked after Kia, Hyundi and Honda.

Just bought a 2013 S60 T5 with same options a month ago. Very happy with it. Was Single owner, 113k miles. Couple of dings around the car. Solid Car (Tank like). Great turn radius. Interior is comfortable, almost roomie considering the outside profile. Headlight assemblies on mine had to be replaced (I insisted, broken seal and yellowed/browned inside). Did it myself it was that easy. Car looks almost new. FIXD ODB2 Scan shows car is in great shape after a month.

Fairly reliable, ok value for money

Very comfortable and safe, decent styling. Just had to replace the a/c pump ($1200), first real issue I've had with this car in 60,000 miles. Service intervals of 10,000 miles. Service is very expensive but if the vehicle holds up its worth it. Peppy engine for no bigger than it is. For the money, it's been a good car but not as good as my 2004 S60 was.

Beautiful Car

This car is truly great. It handles extremely well and has an excellent interior. Furthermore, since it’s an 8 speed automatic it accelerates extremely smoothly. No jerky acceleration or braking. All around great.

2014-Last S60 With a Real Six - Buy One!

I bought my 2014 S60 new and have loved every second behind the wheel. Platinum Package -Ice White exterior with a blue-grey leather interior - Cold Weather Package and 19" BOR wheels with Pirelli P7 All-Season Cinturato's. I live in Wisconsin and the car is excellent in snow. I bought a set of BBS wheels and Michelin snow tires from The Tire Rack for a little over $2,000 and I used them one season - they simply aren't needed on the car. The car is very quick - surprisingly so - 300 HP with 325 lb-ft torque. It handles great with the 19" wheels. I have just under 70,000 miles and haven't had any problems - I do miss the all-inclusive warranty service that included everything - oil changes/wiper blades/brakes, etc. Outstanding service from my Waukesha, WI Volvo dealer. This car flies way-way under the radar. If you want an outstanding car and aren't the type that needs flashy look-at-me styling - I highly recommend you test-drive a used Volvo - the 2014 was the last year you could get the flat six turbo - afterwards they went to 4-cylinder turbos/supercharged engines - those aren't bad-I've driven several as free loaner in the past few years but - they sound busy all the time and my guess is the six will far outlast those overworked engines.

I LOVE this car!!

I got tired of an SUV after putting 201,000 miles on a Trailblazer and started car shopping. I drove the S60 and loved it. Volvo of Savannah gave me a great deal on a "Certified Pre-Owned" car and I've never looked back. It gets great mileage plus it has so much room I can put a full keyboard rig (instrument, amp, stands, etc) in it when I play out! LOVE this car!
