The Good
The 2004 M-Class offers comfortable ride quality and a prestigious badge, appealing to emotional buyers. Practical advantages include available V8 power for towing, decent cargo space, and reasonable reliability for its age. Its robust design and solid feel contribute to a sense of safety and security.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2004 M-Class include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Watch out for potential electrical issues, rust (especially in areas with road salt), and worn suspension components. The fuel economy, particularly with the V8 engine, is not exceptional. Early models of the W163 generation had quality control issues that were mostly addressed by 2004, but careful inspection is still critical.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2004 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?
While 2004 was toward the end of the W163 generation, earlier models (1998-2001) had more significant quality control issues than later models. Therefore, it's still essential to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic specializing in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Check for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Some common recall issues across the W163 generation involved fuel filter issues and potential problems with the braking system. Researching the VIN for any specific recall notices is highly recommended before purchasing.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features included a navigation system (which now appears dated), a premium Bose sound system, heated front seats, and rear parking sensors. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles; there were no blind-spot monitoring or lane-keeping assist systems available. Some models had rain-sensing wipers.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be consulted for specific details. The 2004 M-Class generally performed well in crash tests for its time. However, safety standards have evolved significantly since 2004, so it's crucial to consider that when comparing it to newer vehicles. Check the IIHS and NHTSA websites for the latest available safety information on this model.

How Does the 2004 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Wagon?
In terms of features, the M-Class was competitive, but the RX 330 and MDX often offered more advanced features for the price. Reliability is where the M-Class often falls short compared to the Lexus and Acura. Used prices are similar, but repair costs for the M-Class tend to be higher.
Alternatives to the 2004 M-Class include the Lexus RX 330 for its reliability and comfort, or the Acura MDX for its spaciousness and value. The BMW X5 is a good alternative if handling and performance are priorities, but be prepared for higher maintenance costs. Consider a newer, more reliable SUV if budget allows, as long-term ownership costs could be lower.

Mercedes-Benz M-ClassThe Mercedes-Benz M-Class (GLE-Class) is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC-Class (based on the C-Class) and the larger GLS-Class, with which it shares platforms. For a short time, between 1999 and 2002, the M-Class was also built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, for the European market, before all the production moved to the U.S. plant near Vance, Alabama. From late 2012, the M-Class was also assembled at new plants in India and Indonesia.

Great Mercedes ExperienceI bought this car about 4 years ago - I drove it from Los Angeles to New York and back, only had to change oil and fuel it up. Never had any major problem (the car is 11 years old now, changed a A/C hose that ruptured and the alternator in 2014). This car has a great performance, people wouldn't think a car this old (and heavy - it's an SUV) would be this responsive when you step on the gas. Incredible storage space - I see newer SUVs owners struggling to fit their big objects in their trunks; on the Mercedes, it fits. For a 2004 vehicle, it has most of the whistles and bells that brand new cars today are still yet to have. Great, reliable and comfortable Mercedes experience!
