2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.56
Based on 20 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty front-wheel-drive coupe and convertible, part of the second generation (1995-1999) and third generation (2000-2005) models. Key trims include the RS, GS, GT, and Spyder (convertible). The price range in 2000 varied, but used models now are very affordable. Its sleek design, available turbocharger in earlier generations (though not in the 2000 model), and relatively accessible price made it popular, especially among younger drivers looking for an attractive and fun car.
The Good

The 2000 Eclipse offers a sporty design that appeals to emotional buyers. It provides decent fuel efficiency for its class, making it practical. It's relatively affordable, offering good value. While not a powerhouse in the 2000 model year, it delivers adequate performance for daily driving. Overall, the Eclipse balances style, economy, and cost.

The Bad

The 2000 Eclipse can suffer from electrical issues, particularly with the power windows and accessories. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas with harsh winters. The automatic transmission, if not properly maintained, is a potential weak point. Regular maintenance is key to keeping it running reliably. The base engine can feel underpowered for some drivers.

What Problems Does the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse include electrical issues such as malfunctioning power windows, door locks, and issues with the stereo system. Rust is a significant concern, especially in areas prone to road salt; check the undercarriage and wheel wells. Engine issues, though less common, can occur due to neglected maintenance, so ensure regular oil changes and tune-ups. Transmission problems, particularly with the automatic transmission, are a concern; look for slipping or rough shifting. Another common complaint is related to the catalytic converter failing prematurely.

Recalls for the 2000 Eclipse are relatively limited, but always check the NHTSA website using the VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability concerns center around the age of the vehicle and the potential for wear and tear on components like the suspension, brakes, and exhaust system. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system. Careful inspection and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic are highly recommended.

How long will the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 20 years of service from their vehicles. However, long-term durability heavily depends on diligent maintenance, addressing issues promptly, and avoiding harsh driving conditions. Weaknesses over time include rust, electrical problems, and wear and tear on suspension components. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) and timely replacement of worn parts are crucial for extending the car's lifespan. Neglecting these leads to significant issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse features basic built-in tech compared to modern standards. Entertainment typically includes an AM/FM radio with a cassette player, and optionally a CD player. There are virtually no driver-assistance features. Safety features include dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional. Some trims had a factory security system.

Optional features for the 2000 Eclipse include a sunroof, upgraded stereo system with CD player, leather seats (on GT trim), and alloy wheels.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA or IIHS should be checked for the specific model year. These ratings were not particularly high for frontal impacts compared to modern cars, reflecting the safety standards of the time. Side impact protection was not rigorously tested then. Keep in mind these cars lack modern safety features like stability control or side airbags.

2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse ranged from around $17,000 for the base RS trim to approximately $25,000 for the GT Spyder. Used market prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and location, typically ranging from $2,000 to $7,000. The Eclipse has depreciated significantly due to its age and potential for maintenance issues. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition (rust-free examples command higher prices), mileage, maintenance records, and the desirability of the trim level (GT models are generally more sought after). Low mileage examples in excellent condition fetch a premium.

2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse are generally low due to its age and value. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on the engine and driving habits. Maintenance can be relatively affordable if you perform basic tasks yourself. However, repairs can become costly, particularly if major components like the transmission or engine need attention. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the car's condition; a well-maintained example will be more economical than one with deferred maintenance. Rust repair can be particularly expensive. Therefore, overall it's neither highly economical nor particularly costly, but depends heavily on maintenance.

2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse competed with cars like the Honda Civic Coupe, Toyota Celica, Acura Integra, and Mazda MX-5 Miata (though the Miata is a roadster). In terms of performance, the Celica and Integra offered sharper handling. The Honda Civic Coupe was more reliable and fuel-efficient, albeit less sporty. The Miata provides a superior open-air driving experience.

Feature-wise, the Eclipse was comparable to its rivals, offering similar levels of equipment at its price point. However, the Integra and Celica generally had better build quality. Reliability is where the Eclipse lags; Honda and Toyota products were generally more dependable. Price-wise, the Eclipse was competitive, especially on the used market.

Alternatives to the Eclipse include the Honda Civic Coupe (for reliability and efficiency), the Toyota Celica (for a balance of sportiness and reliability), or the Acura Integra (for a more refined driving experience). If open-top driving is desired, the Mazda MX-5 is a better choice than the Eclipse Spyder due to its superior handling and driving dynamics.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Sedan?

The 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a sporty-looking car. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a clean history and minimal rust. Opting for the GT trim provides a more enjoyable driving experience thanks to the V6 engine. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential.

Be prepared for potential maintenance costs due to its age. If reliability is a top priority, consider alternatives like a Honda Civic Coupe or Toyota Celica. The Eclipse is a stylish choice, but requires diligence in finding a good example and staying on top of maintenance.

One of my favorite cars I've ever owned

The Mitsubishi Eclipse GT was definitely one of my favorite vehicles, as a young adult. It had enough pep, for fun, spirited driving as well as comfortable enough to be a daily. The gas mileage is also not bad for an older v6 engine. I moved multiple times, once including driving across America from Idaho to Georgia, driving 8-12 hours a day, and the car never gave me one issue. My only regret is ever getting rid of the car, at the mileage point of 187k, the only thing I ever replaced was normal wear and tear maintenance items (radiator, timing belt, etc).

2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS

Bought the car 3 yrs ago from a young lad that could not afford to replace the clutch. Had the clutch replaced and fitted a rebuilt manual 5 speed transmission at the same time. Replaced engine mount because one of them was split. Other than that its been fine its 140,000 miles now and it still pulls well and is fast if you know how to change gear quickly. I replaced all four suspension struts this year , installed new springs to drop the height down 2 inches and fitted new Prothane bushes to all of the suspension arms. Boy what a difference to the car its solid in corners and never budges when you apply the power. I recommend installing new springs and struts once you get over 150k miles. Superb little car and it owes me nothing really , I bought it cheap and did some work on it and now its fine. I also replaced the usual wearable parts like tyres and brakes so everything is now sorted and it will last me a few more years now. Nice having no car loan , freedom !

Wow

Bought this brand new in 2000. I have the RS model. After almost 15 years of running it daily, it has almost 170,000 miles on it. I am 54 and have owned many cars over the years, but this is the best one hands down. Past the normal maintenance, I have only sunk about 2,000 into her...trans went out at 160,000, which is to be expected. If she were to blow up tomorrow, I would go out and buy another one just like her. I know she will be with me for many more years. Enjoy your eclipse, because they dont make em anymore...

Great fun, when it works... and it rarely does.

I bought this car not two years ago. I did a lot of research and bought a car that I've loved for a while. It is great performance for the money. I bought it with 140k miles. I've got about 155 now. In the last 18 months since i've owned it, the engine needed a new head gasket, a new rear main seal, THEN it threw a rod. I replaced the engine, which seized up and had to be REBUILT, and now, I'm having some major issues that may force me just junk the car. With how much I've thrown away because of this car, I'd have been better off buying a new/newer car and making payments. I'm highly regretting buying this hunk right now. In total, it's spent at least 4 months being undrivable.
