Based on 85 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the second generation (2007-2014). Available in regular, extended, and crew cab body styles, it offered various bed lengths. Key trims included Work Truck, LS, LT, and LTZ. When new, pricing ranged roughly from $20,000 to $40,000 depending on configuration. Its popularity stemmed from its robust capabilities, comfortable ride, and wide range of configurations to suit various needs, from work to family use.
The Good

The 2009 Silverado 1500 boasts strong performance thanks to its V8 engine options, offering ample towing capacity. It's known for its relative reliability and comfortable ride, particularly in higher trims. The traditional truck design appeals to many, and it presents good value as a used vehicle for buyers needing a capable and dependable truck. You can feel confident on the road and tackle tough jobs.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses in the 2009 Silverado 1500 include potential issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system in some V8 engines, leading to oil consumption. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission and electrical systems. Rust can be a concern in certain climates, particularly around the wheel wells and undercarriage, so inspect carefully.

What Problems Does the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 often revolve around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system in the 5.3L V8 engines. This system can lead to excessive oil consumption due to faulty valve lifters and rings. Symptoms include blue smoke from the exhaust, frequent oil top-offs, and potential engine damage if left unaddressed.
Transmission issues, particularly rough shifting or slipping, have also been reported, often linked to delayed maintenance or worn-out components. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning door locks, window regulators, and gauge cluster issues, are also not uncommon. Some owners have mentioned problems with the four-wheel-drive system, particularly the automatic transfer case.
Rust is a long-term reliability concern, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. The rocker panels, cab corners, and undercarriage are particularly susceptible. Check for bubbling paint or visible rust. Recalls for the 2009 Silverado 1500 have addressed issues like potential brake light malfunctions and unintended airbag deployment. Always check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information related to your specific VIN.
While the 2009 model year isn't particularly worse than others in the 2007-2014 generation, these are common issues to be aware of during inspection and ownership. Regular maintenance and addressing problems promptly can help mitigate potential long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 last?

A well-maintained 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 15-20 years. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system services, is crucial. However, the AFM system in V8 engines remains a potential long-term weakness, potentially requiring costly repairs. Rust prevention is also vital for long-term durability. Trucks used primarily for heavy towing or off-roading may experience accelerated wear and tear on components like brakes, suspension, and the drivetrain.

I bought a 2009 silverado crew new in 09. I have had nothing but problems with it, wireing, ball joints, door locks, bad chrome on bumper. I would not recomend a chevy truck to anyone.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offered a range of built-in tech and safety features, though not as advanced as modern trucks. Entertainment-wise, base models typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims like the LT and LTZ offered upgraded audio systems, including options for satellite radio and Bose speakers. Navigation was available as an optional feature on higher trims.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern standards. Some models offered features like StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control. Rear parking sensors were also available as an option.
Safety features included standard front airbags and side-curtain airbags for head protection. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were also standard. Optional features included OnStar, which provided automatic crash notification and roadside assistance.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the specific cab configuration. The 2009 Silverado 1500 generally received good ratings in frontal crash tests but marginal or acceptable ratings in side-impact tests, depending on the cab style. Always research specific crash test ratings for the cab configuration you're considering, as these ratings can significantly differ.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranged from approximately $20,000 for a base Work Truck to around $40,000 or more for a fully equipped LTZ model. As of today, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, trim, and location. Depreciation has been significant, but trucks generally hold their value better than cars. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, documented maintenance history, low mileage, desirable options (like 4x4 and a V8 engine), and location. Trucks in good condition with clean titles command higher prices.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are generally moderate, depending on your driving record and coverage. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with V8 engines. Maintenance costs are average for a full-size truck, but potential AFM-related repairs can be expensive. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, particularly if major repairs are needed. However, its versatility and utility may justify the cost for some owners.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Silverado's V8 engines are comparable to those of its rivals. Feature-wise, it offers a similar level of equipment for its time, although the F-150 might have a slight edge in available technology at the higher trim levels. Reliability is a mixed bag; while generally dependable, the AFM issues on the Silverado are a concern that the F-150 (without similar systems in the same era) and Tundra don't share. The Ram 1500 of this era often had lower initial prices but sometimes suffered from more frequent repairs.
In terms of pricing on the used market, the Silverado is usually competitive. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Tundra is often considered a more dependable choice, although it might command a slightly higher price. The Ford F-150 is a solid all-around alternative offering a wide range of configurations. The Dodge Ram 1500 can be a good budget-friendly option if you're willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities.

Ranks #234 Truck

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a Good Truck?

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a good option for buyers seeking a capable and versatile used truck for work or personal use. It's ideal for those needing to tow or haul occasionally and appreciate a comfortable ride. It's worth buying if you can find one in good condition with a documented maintenance history, especially one that has addressed potential AFM issues (if equipped with the 5.3L V8). Avoid trucks with excessive rust or signs of neglect. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. It's best to buy used at this point, as purchasing new isn't an option. Thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended before purchasing.
