Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the second generation (2007-2014) of Silverados. It's available in regular, extended, and crew cab configurations with various bed lengths. Key trims include the Work Truck (WT), LS, LT, and LTZ. New pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $45,000, depending on configuration. Its popularity stems from its robust build, wide range of configurations, and strong towing capabilities.
The Good

The 2012 Silverado 1500 offers strong performance with its engine options and a comfortable ride for a truck. It's considered reliable, and its classic truck design appeals to many. The value proposition is strong, especially on the used market, appealing to both budget-conscious and emotionally driven buyers looking for a dependable workhorse.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2012 Silverado 1500 include potential AFM (Active Fuel Management) issues causing oil consumption. Some owners report transmission problems and rust, particularly in areas with road salt. Interior materials can feel dated compared to rivals. Watch for signs of excessive oil consumption and perform thorough inspections.

What Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 often revolve around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system in the 5.3L V8 engine. This system can cause excessive oil consumption as cylinders are deactivated and reactivated. Owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between changes. Another common issue is transmission problems, including hard shifting or slipping, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles. Rust, especially on the rocker panels and around the wheel wells, is a concern, particularly in regions with heavy road salt use.
Recalls for the 2012 Silverado 1500 have included issues with the park brake, potential for unintended airbag deployment, and problems with the brake assist system. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues. The AFM problem can lead to premature engine wear if not addressed. Transmission issues can be costly to repair. Rust can compromise the vehicle's structural integrity over time. Addressing these potential issues with proactive maintenance is crucial for extending the Silverado's lifespan. Some owners recommend disabling the AFM system to mitigate oil consumption concerns.

How long will the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 last?

A 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, with proper maintenance, can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. Many owners report exceeding these figures. However, longevity depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission services, and addressing issues like rust proactively are crucial. Weaknesses over time include potential AFM-related oil consumption, transmission wear, and rust, which can shorten the vehicle's lifespan if neglected. Preemptive maintenance can significantly extend the Silverado's usability.

Bought this truck several years ago - 2012 and it drives excellent! Pulled a 20 ft boat and trailer to the bay with no problem. It is a little tricky to maneuver around short turns.
CaptainRandyZ
Just traded in my 2002 Ram with 215k Miles for a 2012 Silverado. Previous owner kept it garaged, so it looks like new. It has 138k miles, but with the front mounted tow bar, most of those miles have been flat towing. Nice interior, leather has held up well with no tears or stains. Back up camera display is 1/3 of rear view mirror, state of the art in 2012. Steering is a little clunky, due to the wide off road tires, this will change with some sensible all-season radials. Not nearly as much interior hidden storage compartments as the Ram, but the upgrade makes up for that. Happy with the truck so far.
THEKIDD247
This truck met all my needs absolutly better than I was expecting. Cant believe I was able to find such a nice truck. Very clean and for a used truck it looks like its brand new wow is all I can say
Negative Owner Reviews
Two Guns
I like the pickup but the seats are hard and uncomfortable. I sat in several from 2007-2009 and they were all at least ok. Seems they changed the seats and now they aren't comfortable. The gas pedal is too straight up, so I move the seat back, then the steering wheel is too far, basically I have adjusted the seat for 4 months and it just does not fit. Too bad, rest of it is ok. Oh, mileage on window sticker was 19 hwy, I get 17.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500's built-in tech is relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard entertainment features include an AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims offered options like a premium sound system, satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. Navigation was available as an optional feature.
Driver-assistance features were limited. StabiliTrak electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes were standard. Rear parking sensors were optional. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control available.
Safety features include front and side airbags, and side curtain airbags for enhanced occupant protection.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2012 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab a 4-star overall safety rating. Individual crash test ratings vary; check the NHTSA website for detailed information. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should also be consulted for a comprehensive assessment.
Overall, the 2012 Silverado 1500 prioritizes basic functionality and safety over advanced technology, reflecting the vehicle's design era. The optional features can improve the experience, but it lags behind newer trucks in terms of technology and driver-assistance capabilities.

2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranged from approximately $20,000 for a basic Work Truck to $45,000+ for a fully loaded LTZ. Current used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been significant, but the Silverado retains some value due to its reputation for durability. Factors affecting resale value include engine type (V8 models hold value better), cab configuration (crew cabs are more desirable), and overall condition. Trucks with documented maintenance history command higher prices.

2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Silverado 1500 are moderate, varying based on driving record and coverage. Fuel costs can be high, especially with V8 models. Maintenance is generally affordable, but potential AFM or transmission issues can lead to expensive repairs. Long-term ownership costs are average for a full-size truck, but proactive maintenance is key to avoiding major expenses. While not the most economical vehicle, it's not excessively costly if well-maintained.

2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Cab;?

The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Silverado's engine options are comparable, though the F-150's EcoBoost engine offered superior fuel economy and power. Feature-wise, the Silverado lags behind the F-150 and Ram 1500, particularly in interior quality and technology. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Silverado can be reliable, but the AFM issues and potential transmission problems are concerns compared to the Toyota Tundra, which is known for its bulletproof reliability.
Price-wise, the Silverado is often more affordable than the Tundra, but similar to the F-150 and Ram 1500.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Ford F-150: Offers a wider range of engine choices and generally better interior features.
  • Ram 1500: Provides a more comfortable ride and a more modern interior design.
  • Toyota Tundra: Stands out for its exceptional reliability and strong resale value.

A similar alternative would be the GMC Sierra 1500, which is essentially a rebadged Silverado with slightly different styling and trim options. The best choice depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Cab;?

The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and capable truck at a reasonable price, especially on the used market. It's worth buying if you prioritize affordability and capability over the latest technology and interior refinement. It's best suited for those who need a truck for work or towing but don't require the most luxurious features. Opting for a well-maintained LT or LTZ trim with a 5.3L or 6.2L engine is a good balance of features and performance. Have a mechanic inspect any potential purchase for AFM issues, transmission wear, and rust before buying. Avoiding models with documented history of AFM issues is wise.

Best truck ever

I’ve owned my 2012 Silverado for 6 years and 115K miles. Previous owner took good care of it. I tow a 7000 lb camper, no problem. Minor repairs totaling about $3K over 6 years. Maintenance on time and washed often. Clean and dependable. GREAT truck.

Not for previous truck owners.

This truck is inferior to my old truck in everyway, if I could lemon law it on sheer disappointment I would. Built for people who havent owned and dont need a pickup, but want an suv with a bed. I highly regret buying it.
