Rating: 4.38
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact SUV that offers a blend of practicality and affordability. Introduced as a smaller alternative to Chevy's larger SUVs, the Trax is available as a 5-door hatchback/SUV. Key trims include the LS, LT, and Premier. New, the 2018 Trax ranged from around $21,000 to $27,000. Its appeal lies in its compact size, making it ideal for urban environments and easy parking, while still providing SUV-like cargo space.
The Good

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax offers a compelling value proposition. Its compact size and fuel efficiency appeal to practical buyers. The higher trim levels with available features offer a degree of comfort and style that can emotionally resonate with some. While not a performance powerhouse, its maneuverability is a definite plus. It has decent reliability for its class.

The Bad

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax has some notable weaknesses. The engine is underpowered, resulting in sluggish acceleration. The interior materials can feel cheap, especially in lower trims. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission and turbocharger. The rear seats are cramped, and the ride quality can be harsh on rough roads. Be sure to check for any existing recalls and transmission smoothness.

What Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Trax Have?

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax has several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Some owners have experienced issues with the transmission, including hard shifting and slipping. Turbocharger failures have also been reported, leading to reduced engine power and costly repairs. Another common complaint involves the air conditioning system, with some owners reporting that it blows warm air intermittently or fails completely.
Recalls for the 2018 Trax have included issues related to the front suspension, potentially leading to a loss of steering control. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly as the Trax ages. Some owners have reported premature wear of engine components and issues with the electrical system. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help mitigate some of these concerns. The earlier model years of the Trax have exhibited more problems, indicating improvements in later years, but issues still persist with the 2018 model.

How long will the 2018 Chevrolet Trax last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Chevrolet Trax can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-13 years. However, long-term durability is an area of concern. The turbocharger is a known weak point, potentially requiring replacement around 100,000 miles. Transmission issues can also arise over time. Adhering to recommended maintenance schedules, including regular oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Rust in colder climates can be an issue, so undercoating might be a good investment.

I purchased this car used from Sunrise Chevrolet, in Glendale Heights Il. After checking it out with a test drive, I found that it had just what I needed for my short drives. It handles well, is great on gas, Looks like new, and has a lot of pickup. I am retired so this car fits the bill to a tee. As a certified car, they through in a one year Bumper to Bumper Warrantee. I am pleased.

Trax not only had control arm recall, but the transfer case failed and seized. The dealership had it for five months and when we finally got it back it's still acting like it wants to seize again. Also will not go past 3rpmed at all when the engine is revved. Do not buy this car is a death trap waiting to happen .
Rachael
Test drove it, liked the handling of the car, it had a smooth ride, but the interior materials had a cheap feel to them. Nice looking car on the outside, decent on the inside...it just felt cheap.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as standard. This provides seamless smartphone integration for navigation, music, and calls. Standard safety features include a rearview camera and ten airbags. Optional driver-assistance features, available on higher trims, include rear park assist, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning.
In terms of entertainment, the Trax offers a six-speaker audio system. Available tech upgrades include keyless open and start, and a sunroof. The infotainment system is generally user-friendly, but the screen size is relatively small compared to some competitors.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) indicate a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, with some good ratings in specific categories but also marginal ratings in others. It's important to review the specific IIHS ratings for the 2018 model year to understand the vehicle's performance in different crash scenarios.

2018 Chevrolet Trax Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Chevrolet Trax ranged from approximately $21,000 to $27,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Trax experiences significant depreciation due to its smaller size, basic features, and some reliability concerns. Lower mileage, a clean title, and a well-maintained service history can positively impact resale value. Avoid models with reported accidents or significant mechanical issues.

2018 Chevrolet Trax Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than larger SUVs. Fuel economy is decent, contributing to lower running costs. However, potential repairs, particularly related to the turbocharger and transmission, can increase long-term ownership costs. Regular maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is crucial to preventing more expensive repairs down the line. Overall, it balances affordability with the potential for moderate repair expenses.

2018 Chevrolet Trax Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Chevrolet Trax is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Chevrolet Trax Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax competes with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Kicks, and Jeep Renegade. In terms of performance, the Trax lags behind rivals like the HR-V and CX-3, which offer more responsive engines and engaging driving dynamics. Feature-wise, the Trax provides a decent array of standard tech, but some competitors offer more advanced driver-assistance features, especially on higher trims.
Reliability is a key differentiator. The Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 generally have better reliability ratings than the Trax. Price-wise, the Trax is often competitively priced, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, considering the potential reliability issues, investing in a slightly more expensive, but more reliable, option like the Honda HR-V might be a better long-term decision. The Nissan Kicks offers similar affordability with better fuel economy, albeit with less power. The Jeep Renegade offers more rugged styling and off-road capability, but sacrifices fuel efficiency.
Alternatives with better reliability and driving dynamics include the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3. For similar affordability with better fuel efficiency, the Nissan Kicks is a good choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Chevrolet Trax a Good Wagon?

The 2018 Chevrolet Trax is ideal for urban dwellers seeking a compact and affordable SUV for easy parking and decent fuel economy. It's a reasonable choice for first-time car buyers or those on a tight budget. However, potential buyers should be aware of the potential for reliability issues and the somewhat underpowered engine. It might be worth buying used if the price is significantly lower than alternatives and a thorough inspection reveals no major problems. Look for a well-maintained LT or Premier trim for added features and comfort. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended before buying a used 2018 Trax. Consider extended warranty options if available.

Purchased this car as a reliable vehicle for my kid to drive while a long distance away at college. It has been everything but reliable. Constant issues with the engine turbo and sensors. My other kid got a Hyundai and we have had 0 issues. I will not buy another Chevy. I have owned many brands of cars and they have never had issues like this car.

Code of death

Purchased new in 2018. No major issues until the dreaded turbo code at almost 73,000 miles. With still owing over $11,000 on it, I choose to trade it in. Up until that point, it was a good car. Once the turbo goes it opens up a can of worms. It stinks because it’s the same problem that the Cruze had with the turbo. My son is a mechanic and won’t touch his Cruze because once you start fiddling with it, these things go to xxxx quick. GM knew about it, and did not offer any recalls on the vehicle. I chose a Honda because of its value, longevity, and reliability. If at all possible, I will not purchase another GM product.

So far so good

I downsized from a 3 row/8 seater chevy traverse Lt to a basic chevy trax, nothing fancy. I like the familiarity of all the chevy vehicles, it made it easier to transition. This is a great little sporty car. Its a mix of suv look with car storage. Its not as fast as my other car, but the gas mileage seems great. I've only had it for a month though.
