The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox is a compact SUV that emerged as a popular choice for families seeking practicality and affordability. It belongs to the first generation of the Equinox (2005-2009). Key trims included the LS, LT, and LTZ. New, the pricing ranged approximately from $22,000 to $28,000. The Equinox stood out for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and available V6 engine, offering a compelling blend of utility and performance.
The Good

The 2009 Equinox offers a comfortable ride and spacious cabin, appealing to families. The available V6 engine provides adequate performance for those seeking extra power. While not exceptionally fuel-efficient, it provides a good balance. The affordable price point and practicality are attractive to budget-conscious and practical buyers. The stylish (for its time) design also appeals to some.

The Bad

The 2009 Equinox has some known weaknesses. Some owners have reported issues with excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 4-cylinder models. Also, watch out for potential transmission problems and electrical glitches. Rust can also be an issue, especially in areas with harsh winters, so inspect the undercarriage carefully before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox Have?

The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox has several frequently reported problems. Excessive oil consumption is a significant concern, especially in the 2.4L engine. Some owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between oil changes. This issue can lead to engine damage if not monitored closely. Transmission problems, including rough shifting and premature failure, have also been reported. Electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows, door locks, and the radio, are also common.
Recalls for the 2009 Equinox have addressed issues like potential fuel leaks. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to these issues. The body can be susceptible to rust, particularly in areas where salt is used on the roads during winter. The engine and transmission issues mentioned above can also contribute to higher long-term maintenance costs. Before purchasing, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, the lifespan heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly. Average mileage for a well-maintained model could be around 150,000 to 200,000 miles.
Long-term durability weaknesses include potential engine issues (excessive oil consumption), transmission problems, and rust. Neglecting these problems can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan and increase repair costs. Addressing these issues early and adhering to a strict maintenance schedule are critical for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox offered a decent array of technology for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and an auxiliary input jack. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with satellite radio and more speakers.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. It included standard features like antilock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control. Optional features included remote start.
Safety features included standard front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for both rows of seats.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally favorable, with the Equinox receiving good scores in frontal and side-impact crash tests. However, it's always best to check the latest NHTSA ratings for specific details. Keep in mind that safety technology has improved significantly since 2009. The built in tech is quite dated now, and lacks modern features like Bluetooth streaming audio in the base trims and a touchscreen interface in most trims. It's really basic but sufficient for the time it was released.

2009 Chevrolet Equinox Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox had a base price ranging from approximately $22,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim level and options. In today's used market, you can expect to find them priced anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Equinox has depreciated significantly over the years, which is typical for vehicles in this class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has a clean title. Models with the V6 engine and higher trim levels (LTZ) might command slightly higher prices.

2009 Chevrolet Equinox Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox can be moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are typically average for a compact SUV. Fuel costs can be higher, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance can be affordable if preventative measures are taken. However, potential repairs, particularly related to the engine (oil consumption) and transmission, can significantly increase ownership costs. Due to the age of the vehicle, unexpected repairs are more likely, making it less economical compared to newer vehicles.

2009 Chevrolet Equinox Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a LS - FWD with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox Compare to Other LS - FWD?

The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox competed against rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Equinox's available V6 engine gave it an edge over some competitors, but the 4-cylinder was less impressive. Feature-wise, it offered a comparable level of equipment, but wasn't necessarily a standout.
Reliability is where the Equinox fell short compared to the CR-V and RAV4, which are known for their dependability. The Ford Escape, while offering similar performance, also suffered from reliability concerns. Price-wise, the Equinox was often more affordable than the Honda and Toyota.
Better alternatives, prioritizing reliability, would be the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. If you prioritize fuel efficiency and are okay with less powerful engine, consider Mazda Tribute. If a lower price is a primary concern and you're willing to accept potential reliability risks, the Equinox could be considered, but a thorough inspection is essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox a Good LS - FWD?

The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who need a spacious compact SUV and are willing to accept potential reliability risks. It's worth considering only as a used vehicle given its age.
A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential to identify any existing or potential problems. Look for models with a well-documented maintenance history. Lower mileage examples are preferable, but condition is paramount. Because of the engine problems, this should only be considered if it is significantly cheaper than its rivals and you are aware of the potential cost to fix issues. A CR-V or RAV4 might be a better investment in the long run. However, if cost is the most important factor, and you find a well-maintained, low-mileage Equinox after a good inspection, it could be a viable option.

Transmission went out 2 months after purchaxe

This car seemed perfect, even buying slightly used at just over 140k. Then transmission goes out 2 months later after 2500 miles driven. Took to repair man, amazingly this car is his best business for rebuilding transmission, to the point he has all the parts for rebuild in stock. If the tranny can't get out of second then you can't drive it. Manual didn't work either. Shame on chevy for not recalling or replacing these tranny that are obviously making transmission repair people.a ton of money while killing us small town people who buy your products based on a trust in the manufacturer to make them last as long as possible, we are too poor in this day and age to try to put up another 3500 2 months after buying a chevy with the belief it would last well past 200k, what happened to keeping the customers happy therefore loyal

We got there and liked a 2015 Equinox and bought

The 2015 had a two year warranty on it still, rode and drove really nice and was in our price range. Very happy with the gas mileage and seems to have decent power for the 2.4.

At 93,000 i have to replaced the transmission.

After talking to 2 others who have owned a 2009 Equinox I found out the both had transmission problems. One had issues after just one year, but it was covered under warranty. The other person had to replace their transmission at 90,000. Neither would ever buy a Chevy again. Too bad I didn't talk to them before my purchase last year. Now I am forking out $5000 for a new transmission.

Had junk car, drove away with beautiful SUV

My internet homework informed me that 2009 Chevy Equinox was a great used vehicle to purchase. Thomas Kia in Highland, Indiana had the only one in NW Indiana. I received a great deal and I am very happy with my beautiful used 2009 Chevy Equinox.
