What Problems Does the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox Have?

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox has been subject to some frequently reported problems. The most prevalent concern revolves around excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 2.4L four-cylinder engine. This issue can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Some owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between oil changes.

Another common issue involves the timing chain in the 2.4L engine. Premature wear of the timing chain can cause engine misfires and, if left unaddressed, can lead to significant engine damage.

Recalls have been issued for the 2014 Equinox, including those related to potential ignition switch problems (similar to other GM vehicles) and issues with the side airbags. Owners should check the NHTSA website to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often center around the aforementioned engine issues. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and monitoring oil levels, is crucial to mitigating these risks. Transmission issues have also been reported, though less frequently than engine problems. The 2010-2017 model years, particularly those with the 2.4L engine, seem to have a higher incidence of these problems.

How long will the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox last?

With regular maintenance, a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-15 years. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan. The 2.4L engine is a potential weakness, especially if oil consumption issues aren't addressed. Proper care, including timely servicing of the transmission and cooling system, contributes significantly to long-term durability. Rust can also become a factor in colder climates.

This car is a good size but engine is just too small for interstate driving. The interior is comfortable. Driving is good has a good feel to the road. Pretty good car if it had 40 or 50 more horse power.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include a six-speaker audio system, air conditioning, and cruise control. Higher trims (LT and LTZ) offer the MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration (via Bluetooth), satellite radio, and a rearview camera.

Optional features include a navigation system, sunroof, and a premium audio system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to newer models but included available rear parking sensors.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full complement of airbags (front, side, and curtain). Some models also had available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2014 Equinox performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the Equinox a "Good" rating in most of its crash tests. However, it's important to check specific ratings and reports for the 2014 model year as standards evolve.

2014 Chevrolet Equinox Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox had an MSRP ranging from approximately $25,000 to $33,000, depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Equinox has depreciated significantly, as expected for a vehicle of its age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's history (accidents, maintenance), mileage, trim level (LTZ models hold value better), and overall condition. The 2.4L engine issues may negatively impact resale for those models.

2014 Chevrolet Equinox Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox generally falls in the middle range for ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically average for a compact SUV. Fuel costs can be reasonable, especially with the 2.4L engine. However, potential repair costs associated with the engine (oil consumption, timing chain) can increase long-term ownership expenses. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs. Overall, while not the cheapest, it's not excessively costly to own, but diligence in maintenance is key to keeping costs down.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Equinox with the V6 engine offers competitive power, but the base engine lags behind some rivals. Feature-wise, it's generally comparable, though the infotainment system can feel dated.

Reliability is where the Equinox falls short compared to the CR-V and RAV4, which have better track records. The Ford Escape offers a sportier driving experience, while the Mazda CX-5 provides a more refined interior and handling.

In terms of price, the Equinox is often competitively priced, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. If reliability is a top priority, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 are better alternatives. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more upscale feel and sharper handling. The Ford Escape provides a balance of performance and features. Depending on individual needs and preferences, each of these alternatives may be a better choice than the 2014 Equinox. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is also a good alternative to consider.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox a Good Wagon?

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is a decent choice for buyers seeking a comfortable and affordable compact SUV, especially if budget is a primary concern. It's ideal for individuals or small families who value a spacious interior and don't require top-tier performance or the latest technology. However, it's essential to be aware of the potential engine issues, particularly with the 2.4L engine. A thorough inspection and maintenance records are crucial before purchasing. The V6 model might be a better option for those prioritizing performance and willing to sacrifice some fuel economy. Overall, it can be worth buying *if* purchased at a reasonable price and thoroughly inspected for known issues.

Oil leaks into the engines.

There is/was a recall through 2013 for the engines on this car. The 2014 suffer from the same problem of oil leaking into the engine but is not under the recall (owners petitioned but the GOP stacked courts upheld not including) We replaced the engine and now a year later and about 8k miles more same problem is occurring. Have about another month on the engine.

Don't waste your money

I am 66 yrs old and have owned numerous cars, this is by far the worst car I have ever driven. Yes I bought it used, but I have had it at the shop every month for one issue or another for the past year. Not ever buying another chevy product again The sensor light come on and the electrical system now reads codes and makes the car not run. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Engine troubles

This car has a ver narrow space in the back. A set of golf clubs do not fit in the back so you have to lower the back seat for them to fit! I had to change a variable timing solenoid multiple times in this car and at 105,000 miles the timing chain failed and the engine was shot! When it was working, it was a comfortable car to drive and I enjoyed it but there were a lot of headaches. Buy this car and your mechanic will thank you!

Comfortable

Most comfortable car I have ever ridden in. I will buy this car again. This rides more comfortable than my sister-in-law's Audi. I'm looking by a 2023 hybrid equinox.

Most unreliable vehicle

AC compressor went out first thing from the dealer and I was charged for it?? Then it went out for another issue and cost me. The next thing was check engine light for some sensor that was related to transmission and another one that was for emissions and was told it would be cost $2400 to be repaired. For the amount of headache this vehicle just isn't worth it. Too, too many smaller issues as well and ride is stiff and used 2 qts of oil between changes. For a vehicle that is one owner before us and only 86k miles is unacceptable. Never a domestic car again and definitely not a GM. What a joke of a company.

Pros and Cons of Chevy Equinox.

The car is popular, easy to drive, and stylish..hard time getting Chevy to service the car especially when it started getting older. Also had a problem with the windshield wipers that I had to pay to have fixed, and it's now on recall.
