What Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Have?

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has experienced a few frequently reported problems. Some owners have complained about issues with the infotainment system, including freezing and slow response times. There have also been reports of excessive oil consumption in some of the 1.5L turbo engines. Turbocharger failures have been reported, primarily in the 1.5L engine. Another common complaint relates to the automatic stop/start system malfunctioning.
Several recalls have been issued for the 2018 Equinox, including recalls related to fuel pumps, fuel lines, and potentially faulty welds on the seat frames.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the turbocharger and the potential for oil consumption issues. Regular maintenance, including frequent oil changes, is crucial to mitigate these potential problems. Checking the vehicle's recall history and service records is highly recommended before purchasing a used 2018 Equinox. Specific issues can vary by engine choice and driving habits, so a thorough inspection is always advisable.

How long will the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-12 years. Regular oil changes (especially important for the turbo engines), timely fluid replacements, and addressing minor repairs promptly are essential for longevity. Weaknesses over time often relate to the turbocharger's lifespan, potential for increased oil consumption, and wear and tear on suspension components. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance significantly impacts its long-term durability.

Glad I bought the premier model with all the “bells and whistles”. Suggests for improvement : Automatic folding side mirrors when parking Locking gas cap More staffing and customer friendly service for guaranteed warranty issues. (I was told 3 week wait for appointment followed by leaving the vehicle for another three weeks to check an engine light problem. Why couldn’t the service dept call me when ready instead of leaving the car for three weeks with no replacement vehicle?) The desk person suggested I take it elsewhere where the warranty wouldn’t be honored!

Love this SUV! This is what I was looking for with many features than my former vehicle. But I love Malibu. Love Chevrolet! It ran in my family blood!

This is a great car. Handles well in any weather. Gets great gas mileage. Wish it had 3rd row seating. It's a very reliable auto

I’ve had a lot of bad cars in my life but this one is BY FAR the worst one I’ve ever had. It has 74,000 miles on it and I’ve had it for about a year and a half and it has done nothing but cause me problems. Almost a year into paying for it I had to have the battery replaced and now I’ve had to have 6 other parts replaced on it and STILL it doesn’t work. I’ve spent at least $1,000 on just repairs for it and at this point I’m ready to trash the thing. Every single mechanic I have taken it to has told me that I should’ve never bought this car because they’re nothing but trouble and I promise I will NEVER buy a Chevy again and I recommend that nobody else does either unless you’d like to spend all of your money and time trying to fix it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Great car, very underrated.

I bought this car because I needed a dependable SUV and have not been disappointed. Reminds me of my former BMW x3, but without the crazy upkeep costs. The Panoramic sunroof is great. Plenty of room for my weekend toys. A very satisfied customer. Drives like a dream, great gas milage. I like the Pumpkin color too!

Great car and and it can flat tow behind our RV.

Bought the 2018 lt Equinox in 2019 from Hertz with 36k on it, for 15k. Really reliable, no issues so far, drives great at 72k, no mechanic issues, only oil change. Will do coolant flush soon and brakes. Bought it as a tow behind our RV, tows good.

Your mileage may vary, great car for us so far

It’s not a luxury car so don’t expect luxury things. It’s relatively slow, but about what you’d expect from 170hp. It gets decent gas mileage but not the best in its class. The stock audio from Apple CarPlay is better than some “premium” audio I’ve had in other cars, it’s really punchy and clear. There’s a little delay with the backup camera kicking in and turning off, but the feed is live. I ignore modern cars suggested extended oil change intervals and change it every 5k (I think the built in oil life gauge is set to 7.5k), and anyone who thinks “lifetime transmission fluid” is a thing is an idiot; change it every 30-60k miles depending how hard you drive it. I’ve yet to have any issues with it in 70k miles so far; no burning oil, no shifting issues, haven’t even had to service brakes yet. If you drive a car like an idiot, you’ll have mechanical issues with any car. Judging by how I’ve seen most people driving this car, it’s understandable they are having shifting/engine problems. I’ve never owned a car that didn’t last til at least 250k miles, and I suspect this one will be no different. Oh, and if you hate the useless start/stop that you can’t turn off (without shifting to Low; don’t do this, it prioritizes lower gears when you let off acceleration which will wear down your transmission faster; stop telling people to do this), you can buy an inline disabler for like $15-$20 on Amazon. Just enter your model year and engine configuration. It plugs in just behind the radiator, no tools needed. Bypasses the auto on/off system all together with no engine codes. Works great, no more sketchy merges.

Never Buy Another

No CD player. When you stop, the engine shuts off and then re-starts when you excelerate. No gas cap, anyone can put junk in it. Controls all over the dash, too many scattered. Small area in the rear, barely get a set of golf clubs in it. I would never buy another!

Great Value & Dependability

We own a 2.0 Turbo Equinox & we love it. Before buying it I did some research on the engines & decided to go with the 2.0 liter Turbo & it has made a huge difference. The only drawback is the Auto Stop because it really puts a lot of extra wear on the starter. After doing some investigating we found out that if you put the transmission in L & click up the gear up to 9 it stops the Auto Stop which makes it a lot easier on the starter. I would recommend the 2.0 Liter Turbo Equinox to anyone.
