What Problems Does the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Have?

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox has experienced a few frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches, freezing, and connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There have also been reports of sensor malfunctions, impacting the functionality of safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.
Recalls have been issued for certain 2020 Equinox models, often relating to fuel pump issues that could lead to stalling and an increased risk of a crash. Other recalls have involved issues with the rear suspension and seat welds.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the 1.5L turbocharged engine. Some owners have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. The automatic transmission has also been a source of complaints, with some experiencing rough shifting or hesitation. Prior model years (e.g., 2018, 2019) have also had similar reports, suggesting these may be recurring problems. Regular maintenance and addressing any warning signs promptly are crucial for mitigating these potential issues. Checking the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls is strongly recommended before purchase.

How long will the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely fluid replacements, and proactive repairs are essential. Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned engine issues (oil consumption) and transmission problems. Suspension components and electronic systems may also require attention as the vehicle ages. Vehicles in harsher climates or those subjected to heavy use may experience a shorter lifespan. Addressing potential problems early significantly enhances longevity.

I love this car. It is so beautiful, inside and out. There is not one complaint, I could say about it. I went on a long trip and go 34 mpg I can’t not like this car. It has so much pep and is so comfortable inside.

I Purchased my 2020 vehicle from Weber Chevrolet 270/Olive. My Sales Rep was Joe Rice. He was very knowledgeble about my vehicle. He also, answered all my questions & concerns. He is an excellent asset to the Weber Chevrolet company. I highly recommend him to others who are thinking about & making a car purchase. Thanks Joe Rice

I bought a 2020 Equinox LT2 2.0 Turbo and the thing just flat hauls xxx, I love it. The handling is great, the ride is very good for a mid size SUV, I really don't get why the previous reviews were so bad, they must have been given a monday or friday car. I have been in the auto industry for over 40yrs and this is one of the best offerings from chevy in years! We had a 2011 LT1 that couldnt get out of its own way, so I traded it in never really intending to buy anything with a turbocharger, but after I test drove this one I was sold! xxxx the dealership even gave me well above and beyond the fair market value on my 2011 even with "key scratchs" down the whole right side and 2 minor accidents reported. And they took 10000+ off sticker and free "Dupont" coating. Like I said, I LOVE this truck!!! If someone got a bad one I feel for them, but mine is GREAT!!!!!!! Its also the "Pacific Blue Metallic" which just like a "Morano" custom paint. (It changes color depending on you're point of view) its absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

I didn’t know they could make cars this bad. It has a weak engine hooked up to a turbo charger and they DO NOT work together. The power is always behind you and you don’t know when it will get there. On the freeway you feel like your going to be killed. The sway bar on the vehicle is completely out of control you feel massive swaying back and forth all the time, it doesn’t matter if you actually turn on the mechanism. The red beeper to warn you on the front windshield is actually a distraction and goes off randomly. The worst part is you can see it while your driving. The volume buttons are on the back of the steering wheel so when your on the freeway you will grab them and all of a sudden the volume goes way up or down or the channel will change. The A/C is complicated and I never did fully figure it out. I sold that xxx after a few months, I got a good price for it. The dealership did not get a good car lol.

This is absolutely the worst vehicle I have ever driven, the “front end collision prevention” should honestly be called the “rear end collision guarantee.” It will locked your brakes dead stop in the middle of an intersection. Don’t bother driving through residential neighborhoods as it assumes the parked cars on the streets are hazards. The lane stay assist is spotty AT BEST, as it has attempted to prevent me from making emergency maneuvers multiple times. The technological features work maybe 80% of the time, as for the 20% you’ll just sit in silence as your vehicle thinks it’s connected to your phone and will not play any sound. The engine is lackluster. The space provided for you is a minuscule upgrade over the Chevy trax, which gets considerably better gas mileage and performs better for cheaper.

This car is crap. It has several recall issues. My husband was driving our "new" 2020 Equinox. (This was a loaner car with about 1600 miles on it.CONSIDERED NEW TO THE dealership.) He tried to pass a large truck. The car just decellerated as soon as he pressed the excellerator,so he couldn't pass the truck and was left coasting in the left lane. The road narrowed there,so the truck almost hit him. This thing is a death trap. Then Onstar informed me,via email,of a transmission problem. Too little ,too late. Also, there is a fuel tank issue as well. L E M O N! I'M SO PISSED OFF AND DISAPPOINTED THAT I GOT SWINDLED. I don't want this car. The dealership's motto is something like, "Don't like your car? Return it." Yeah, right. What a lie and a bait and switch rip off. If they don't take it back and get me a new car,I'll be writing a piece in the local papers about how a certain dealership is tricking people into buying inferior, unreliable, recalled products. Or,I will retain a good lemon law attorney. This is just totally unacceptable. We drove it less than 100 miles, and the transmission had to be replaced!!!!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox comes with a decent array of built-in tech features. Standard is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. Available entertainment features include a premium Bose audio system and a rear-seat entertainment system.
Driver-assistance and safety features include standard features like a rearview camera and available features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control is also available.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are generally positive, with the 2020 Equinox receiving a 5-star overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also awarded the Equinox with high marks, though specific ratings may vary depending on the trim and optional safety equipment. It's crucial to check the ratings from both organizations for the most up-to-date and accurate information.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox competes with popular compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of performance, the Equinox's 1.5L turbo engine is adequate but lacks the punch of some rivals' offerings. The CR-V and RAV4 offer superior reliability ratings. The Mazda CX-5 boasts a more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the Equinox is competitive, but the Honda CR-V often provides more advanced driver-assistance technologies as standard.
Price-wise, the Equinox is generally more affordable than the CR-V and RAV4, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the slightly higher price of the CR-V and RAV4 may be justified by their enhanced reliability and resale value.
Alternatives to consider include the Mazda CX-5 for its driving dynamics and upscale interior, the Honda CR-V for its reliability and practicality, and the Toyota RAV4 for its excellent fuel economy and reputation for longevity. The Nissan Rogue offers a more stylish interior but has a mixed reliability record. If reliability is a top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 are arguably better choices.

Ranks #806 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox a Good Wagon?

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a decent choice for budget-minded buyers seeking a comfortable and practical compact SUV. It's ideal for small families or individuals prioritizing value and user-friendly technology. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, if priced competitively and thoroughly inspected for any potential issues, particularly engine oil consumption and transmission concerns. Opting for higher trims like the LT or Premier provides more desirable features. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic to identify any potential problems before committing to the purchase. If reliability is paramount, exploring alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 might be a wiser decision.

Not so good service center

I love the car, however, the maintenance team I had to work on the car was one star. I had my car serviced for an oil change for its 3 months change which was fine, but they wanted to charge $25 for wiper blades. lol I told them I was not going to pay and I had to see the guy who sold me the car and told no wiper blade last longer than 4 months. lol The car sheet said it came with NEW wiper blades. I had to do all the leg work and they didn't talk to the guys that sell the cars or any people on the other side. Why do they even have a "service center?"

I bought a BRAND NEW LEMON... 2020 Chevy Equinox

Bought a 2020 Chevy Equinox in August 2020... "Brand New" with 9 miles on it!! 2 weeks after purchase I was stranded on the side of the road due to COMPUTER MALFUNCTION... Roughly 6 months later I was STRANDED yet AGAIN...Due the FUEL PUMP going out... It ran well for about 1yr then I shut the driver door & the window shattered... Needless to say this vehicle IS BACK IN REPAIRS... because apparently the TRANSMISSION has went out!! I have not had the chance to experience driving a BRAND NEW VEHICLE since I've had it... DO NOT BUY THIS CAR

Overall, 4 out of 5. Not bad.

I bought mine 2 yrs old with 11,900 miles on it. In the market of that time I got a good deal on it and had to fight to be the first person to look at it before it even made it back to the dealership from trade in. I desperately needed a car that would get me through 2-3 yrs worry free. I got that for sure! This was barely broke in and runs great. I think I'll need new tires but it has almost all of the features that I wanted. Its not my favorite car, I settled for this as the one I wanted you can't find. They go in hours! And there's waiting lists across town for everything! So whatever I bought this. I think for the size of it it's fine but I don't like the bucket seats in front, they're way too small and hurts me I have to adjust them a certain way and probably add pillows to be able to sit comfortably. Im not a big girl by any means just a little "chunky" and I'm used to regular seats from a big SUV. Now I own a tiny petite "grandma's car" as my son puts it lol. Otherwise, its got good features some I turn off, missing the heated steering wheel, small 4 cyl with turbo it works nothing like the 6 I had but its a new car! Can't argue with that.

Great car, horrible air with no rear air vents

Plenty of room inside, problem is the second row of seating has no air .. it just doesn’t cut the heat and the back seats just suck… you can’t feel any air and the cabin just stays hot unless the air is all the way up. Needs vents in other areas.

Love this SUV!

Love my Equinox. I have always been a sedan person so this was my first adventure with a larger vehicle. I love the roomy inside. Comfortable for all passengers. Heated seats are awesome. Wish they had the same design as the Silverado where you could turn on just the back and not the whole seat. Decided to buy out my lease while the interest rates were low and cars were scarce and I don't regret my decision. Wish it had a little more power on quick take offs.

Very happy with the Equinox

We looked at quite a few vehicles before buying a 21 Equinox Premier. Love the newer body style it rides great, very quiet and smooth. The car had Hankook tires on it, I replaced them with Michelin tires. The car has so much power even with a small engine 1.5L I guess the turbo is doing it’s job. The car has so many nice features for the price, heated and cooled seats work great, it also came with all weather floor mats as well as carpeted mats. My wife drives the car as her daily driver and she loves it and all the features it has. It’s worth a test drive.
