Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Chevrolet Impala Have?
Transmission problems, such as slipping or hard shifting, have been reported, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas where road salt is used during winter. The lower body panels, rocker panels, and wheel wells are susceptible to rust.
Some owners have also reported issues with the power windows and door locks. Interior components, such as the dashboard and door panels, can be prone to cracking or fading over time. Recalls for the 2002 Impala have addressed issues such as faulty fuel tank straps and potential problems with the daytime running lights. Potential buyers should check the VIN with the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Generally, the 2000-2003 model years had similar issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option on some trims and standard on others, and daytime running lights. Traction control was also available as an option on certain trims.
Optional features included items like remote keyless entry, power driver's seat, and leather upholstery. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash test ratings for the 2002 Impala were generally favorable. It typically received a 4- or 5-star rating for frontal crash protection for both driver and passenger. Side impact ratings varied, but usually scored around 3-4 stars. It is important to note that safety standards and crash test methodologies have evolved significantly since 2002, so these ratings should be considered in that context. Overall, the Impala provided adequate safety for its era, but lacked the advanced tech features found in modern vehicles.

How Does the 2002 Chevrolet Impala Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability is where the Impala sometimes faltered compared to the Japanese competitors. The Camry and Accord are often considered more reliable in the long run, while the Taurus had its own set of issues. The Concorde offered a more luxurious feel, but its reliability could also be questionable. In terms of price, the Impala was often competitively priced, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord for their reliability and resale value. The Buick Regal, which shared a platform with the Impala, could also be a good alternative if you prefer a slightly more refined interior. The Ford Taurus is another option in the same price range, but research its specific issues for that model year. The Nissan Altima from that era also offers good reliability and fuel economy.

Great car!Just put $4400.00 dollars of work in it to restore it, because my wife and I weren't using it. It was in our driveway. We revved it up a couple of times a month. Just needs some brake work now.

Very reliable. A few minor, constant repairs.I cried when I had to get rid of the car. Bought it new, literally ran it into the ground after 15 years. 105,000 when I sold it to someone who promptly wrecked it. Wish I could find another that is not rusted away.
