The 2002 Chevrolet Impala marked the third year of the eighth-generation model, a continuation of Chevy's full-size sedan legacy. This generation, launched in 2000, featured a more rounded design than its predecessors. Available as a four-door sedan, key trims included the base Impala, LS, and the sporty SS. New pricing ranged approximately from $20,000 to $25,000. Its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and available V6 power made it a popular choice for families and fleet buyers.
The Good

The 2002 Impala offers a smooth, comfortable ride and ample interior space, appealing to practical buyers. Performance from the available 3.8L V6 provides adequate power for daily driving. Reliability is generally considered decent for its age. It represents good value, offering a lot of car for the money. The Impala's reputation for dependability might appeal to those seeking peace of mind.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2002 Impala include issues with the intake manifold gaskets, which can cause coolant leaks. The ABS system is another area prone to problems. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. Interior plastics can feel cheap and may not hold up well over time. Transmission issues have also been reported.

What Problems Does the 2002 Chevrolet Impala Have?

The 2002 Chevrolet Impala, like many vehicles of its age, has some frequently reported problems. A common issue is coolant leaks due to failing intake manifold gaskets, particularly with the 3.8L V6 engine. This can lead to engine overheating if not addressed promptly. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) issues are also prevalent, with reports of the ABS module failing or malfunctioning, leading to the ABS light illuminating.
Transmission problems, such as slipping or hard shifting, have been reported, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas where road salt is used during winter. The lower body panels, rocker panels, and wheel wells are susceptible to rust.
Some owners have also reported issues with the power windows and door locks. Interior components, such as the dashboard and door panels, can be prone to cracking or fading over time. Recalls for the 2002 Impala have addressed issues such as faulty fuel tank straps and potential problems with the daytime running lights. Potential buyers should check the VIN with the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Generally, the 2000-2003 model years had similar issues.

How long will the 2002 Chevrolet Impala last?

A well-maintained 2002 Chevrolet Impala can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. With diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs, it could provide 15-20 years of service. However, factors like driving conditions and climate significantly impact longevity. The intake manifold gasket issue remains a prominent weakness, and addressing it proactively can extend engine life. Rust prevention is crucial in colder climates. The durability of interior components is also a concern, potentially requiring replacement of trim pieces or upholstery over time. Neglecting maintenance will drastically reduce its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Chevrolet Impala offered basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might offer an upgraded sound system. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available.
Safety features included dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option on some trims and standard on others, and daytime running lights. Traction control was also available as an option on certain trims.
Optional features included items like remote keyless entry, power driver's seat, and leather upholstery. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash test ratings for the 2002 Impala were generally favorable. It typically received a 4- or 5-star rating for frontal crash protection for both driver and passenger. Side impact ratings varied, but usually scored around 3-4 stars. It is important to note that safety standards and crash test methodologies have evolved significantly since 2002, so these ratings should be considered in that context. Overall, the Impala provided adequate safety for its era, but lacked the advanced tech features found in modern vehicles.

2002 Chevrolet Impala Prices and Market Value

The 2002 Chevrolet Impala had a new MSRP ranging roughly from $20,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim level and options. Today, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been substantial, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage, maintenance records, and trim level (SS models generally retain higher value). Low mileage examples in excellent condition with complete service history will fetch the highest prices.

2002 Chevrolet Impala Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2002 Chevrolet Impala are generally low due to its age and modest value. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on driving habits and engine choice. Maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While some repairs are relatively inexpensive, others like transmission or intake manifold gasket replacement can be costly. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the vehicle's condition and how well it has been maintained. Overall, it can be an economical car if you find a well-maintained example, but neglected ones can become expensive.

2002 Chevrolet Impala Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Chevrolet Impala is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Chevrolet Impala Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2002 Chevrolet Impala competed against vehicles like the Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Chrysler Concorde. In terms of performance, the Impala's 3.8L V6 was competitive, though the SS version offered a bit more power. Features-wise, the Impala was generally on par, offering similar amenities to its rivals. However, the Camry and Accord often had a slight edge in perceived interior quality and refinement.
Reliability is where the Impala sometimes faltered compared to the Japanese competitors. The Camry and Accord are often considered more reliable in the long run, while the Taurus had its own set of issues. The Concorde offered a more luxurious feel, but its reliability could also be questionable. In terms of price, the Impala was often competitively priced, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord for their reliability and resale value. The Buick Regal, which shared a platform with the Impala, could also be a good alternative if you prefer a slightly more refined interior. The Ford Taurus is another option in the same price range, but research its specific issues for that model year. The Nissan Altima from that era also offers good reliability and fuel economy.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Chevrolet Impala a Good Sedan?

The 2002 Chevrolet Impala is ideal for budget-minded buyers seeking a spacious and comfortable used car. It's worth considering if you find a well-maintained example with relatively low mileage and a clean service history. The LS trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid examples with obvious signs of rust or neglect. While a new purchase is obviously impossible, a used Impala could be worthwhile as a temporary or inexpensive commuter car, provided you are prepared for potential maintenance costs and are aware of its known weaknesses. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. If long-term reliability is a primary concern, consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

Great car!

Just put $4400.00 dollars of work in it to restore it, because my wife and I weren't using it. It was in our driveway. We revved it up a couple of times a month. Just needs some brake work now.

Very reliable. A few minor, constant repairs.

I cried when I had to get rid of the car. Bought it new, literally ran it into the ground after 15 years. 105,000 when I sold it to someone who promptly wrecked it. Wish I could find another that is not rusted away.
