2000 Chevrolet Impala Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.23
Based on 26 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025

The 2000 Chevrolet Impala marked the return of the iconic nameplate after a four-year hiatus. It's a full-size sedan, known for its spacious interior and comfortable ride. Model years for this generation ran from 2000 to 2005. Key trims included the base model and the LS. Pricing in 2000 ranged from around $20,000 to $23,000. Its affordability and roomy cabin made it a popular choice for families and fleet buyers.

The Good

The 2000 Impala offered a balance of practicality and comfort. Its V6 engine provided adequate performance for daily driving. It was known for its reliability and comfortable ride, appealing to practical buyers. The Impala's spacious interior and classic American sedan design might evoke a sense of nostalgia and pride for some owners, appealing to more emotional considerations.

The Bad

The 2000 Impala had some weaknesses. The plastic intake manifold was prone to cracking. Some owners reported issues with the anti-theft system and the transmission. Rust could also be a problem, especially in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance and inspection of these components are crucial.

2000 Chevrolet Impala: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 3.4L V6
  • Horsepower: 180 hp
  • Fuel Economy: Approximately 19 mpg city / 29 mpg highway
  • 0-60 Times: Around 9 seconds
  • Towing Capacity: Not recommended for towing
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • Base: Included standard features such as air conditioning, power windows, power locks, and a basic audio system. Cloth upholstery was standard.
    • LS: Added features like alloy wheels, upgraded audio system, remote keyless entry, and sometimes leather upholstery. Could also include options such as traction control and heated mirrors.
  • Additional Notes: Both trims offered a smooth and comfortable ride. The 3.4L V6 was generally considered reliable. However, performance was adequate but not sporty. Interior materials were basic but functional. While there were no drastic differences between the base and LS models, the LS trim offered a noticeable upgrade in terms of convenience and aesthetics. For those looking for a slightly more refined experience, the LS was the better choice. Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available as an option.

What Problems Does the 2000 Chevrolet Impala Have?

The 2000 Chevrolet Impala has several frequently reported problems. A common issue is the cracking of the plastic intake manifold, which can lead to coolant leaks and engine overheating. The anti-theft system can sometimes malfunction, preventing the car from starting. Transmission issues, such as slipping or rough shifting, are also reported, particularly at higher mileage. Rust can be a significant problem, especially in areas with road salt. Electrical problems, including issues with the power windows and door locks, are not uncommon.

Recalls for the 2000 Impala focused on issues such as faulty windshield wiper modules and potential problems with the fuel system. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for engine issues due to the intake manifold problem. Regular maintenance, including coolant flushes and transmission servicing, is essential to mitigate these issues.

Specific issues related to the 2000 model year itself aren't drastically different from other years in that generation (2000-2005), but the age of the vehicle means that wear and tear will exacerbate any inherent weaknesses. Paying close attention to the cooling system, transmission, and potential rust spots is crucial when considering a used 2000 Impala.

How long will the 2000 Chevrolet Impala last?

With proper maintenance, a 2000 Chevrolet Impala can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially providing 15-20 years of service. However, the actual lifespan depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting issues like coolant leaks or transmission service will significantly shorten its lifespan. The primary long-term durability concerns revolve around the plastic intake manifold and the transmission. Rust can also become a major issue, particularly in colder climates. Regular fluid changes, timely repairs, and rust prevention measures are crucial for maximizing longevity.

Positive Owner Reviews

This car gets you from point a to point b. It?s a good car with a decent mpg so you won?t have to fill up constantly . It?s not an expensive car .
rctnk99
This car is in constant repair mode. When it's fixed, it runs like a dream, but every month it seems something else breaks down. It's a shame, because as a larger person, this car has plenty of room for me, and the bench seating is something I'll sorely miss. However, it's not worth having what's essentially a monthly car payment's worth of repairs.
Tieshamw22
I love this car. Its reliable. Fast. 4 wheel drive. What else do you need? I would deffiantly purchase another one.
Negative Owner Reviews
bcnelmsd5
What may look like a decent car, is everything but. My grandfather bought this car from a friend, and I bought it from him. The man assured it was a great car, and from the looks it was. Well little did we know we would later on have to replace every motor mount and just about everything else under the hood, but the motor and transmission. The hair and heat only blows on defrost, and it makes a loud whistle when you mash the gas! Wow, yeah I hate this car!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Chevrolet Impala offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features by modern standards. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a cassette player. The LS trim often came with an upgraded audio system, potentially including a CD player. Driver-assistance features were minimal, limited to optional traction control.

Safety features included standard front airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were an available option. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed acceptable performance for frontal impacts, but side-impact protection was less impressive. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were not readily available for this specific model year. The safety tech was adequate for its time, but significantly behind modern vehicles.

The 2000 Impala focused on providing basic transportation rather than cutting-edge technology. Optional features like remote keyless entry and upgraded audio were available on higher trims, but overall, the tech and safety features were fairly simple compared to contemporary cars. Buyers seeking advanced safety or entertainment options would likely find the 2000 Impala lacking.

2000 Chevrolet Impala Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Chevrolet Impala had a base price of around $20,000, while the LS trim was priced closer to $23,000. In today's used market, a 2000 Impala typically sells for between $1,000 and $4,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, documented maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has any outstanding mechanical issues. Cars with rust damage or high mileage will fetch significantly lower prices.

2000 Chevrolet Impala Cost of Ownership

The 2000 Chevrolet Impala is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to the vehicle's age and value. Fuel economy is decent for a full-size sedan of its era. Maintenance costs can be moderate, but repair costs can increase if major components like the transmission or intake manifold require replacement. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglecting repairs will lead to higher overall expenses. Compared to newer cars, it is likely to be cheaper to insure and potentially repair, but fuel economy is comparatively worse.

2000 Chevrolet Impala Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Chevrolet Impala is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Chevrolet Impala Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2000 Chevrolet Impala competed with full-size sedans like the Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon, and Chrysler Concorde. In terms of performance, the Impala's 3.4L V6 was comparable to the base engines offered by its rivals. Feature-wise, the Impala was generally competitive, offering similar levels of comfort and convenience. Reliability was a mixed bag; while the Impala had its share of issues, some rivals, like the Chrysler Concorde, were known for their own reliability problems. Price-wise, the Impala was often more affordable than the Toyota Avalon, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Alternatives to the 2000 Impala include the Ford Taurus, which offered similar features and reliability at a comparable price point. The Toyota Avalon provided superior reliability and a more refined driving experience, but came at a higher cost. The Buick Century, another GM product, offered a similar driving experience with potentially better reliability ratings.

Whether a rival is "better" depends on individual priorities. For reliability and refinement, the Toyota Avalon is a better choice. If affordability is paramount, the Ford Taurus or Buick Century are similar alternatives. The Impala strikes a balance between price, space, and adequate performance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Chevrolet Impala a Good Sedan?

The 2000 Chevrolet Impala is ideal for budget-minded buyers seeking a spacious and comfortable used sedan. It is best suited for those who prioritize affordability over advanced features or sporty performance. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on the vehicle's condition and maintenance history. A well-maintained example with lower mileage can be a good value. However, be prepared for potential repairs and ensure a thorough inspection before purchasing. The LS trim offers slightly more features but isn't essential. Purchasing one with extensive rust or signs of neglect is not recommended.

Best car

My dad used to own a 2000 Impala Base, he loved how it handled in the illinois snow and how it flowed over the bumps and so on the road.

Safe, Large Car, great for a retired truck driver.

I am 6-2 and 200 lb's and long legs appreciate a big roomy car. It is a safe car for my grandchildren to be learning how to drive. You can trust it mechanically and reliability. This is a good car for long trips and is comfortable.

It's 2019 and I wish I could find a nice 2000!

For those folks that can't finance a dependable work car- Look for a low mileage, low owner, 2000 Impala. Either base or LS. Back in 2003, 2004 I had the pleasure of driving my son's sassy red 2000 Impala LS for errands when I visited the grand children, and to take on a short road trip. The bucket seats were comfy as heck, the power options great, the sound system gave me all my old-school tunes with strong bass how I like it. The V-6 gave me all the power I needed, and to boot, it wasn't a gas guzzler for being a big-to-mid-size car (I owned a little old Ford Ranger myself, so the Impala felt spacious) My son's family of 4.5 drove their 2000 Impala LS near to death, then sold it next to their teenage brother-in-law. This kid never took care of the car, other than put gas in it. One can imagine what that male teenager did to the car's neglected engine and drive-train ... The last I heard it had 200,000 plus miles on it, and the dumb brother-in-law blew the engine by leaving the radiator dry then racing one of his buddies on a freeway. Sheesh! In my book, this particular Chevy model is a testament to American car building. It would still be going strong if it had owners who took care of it.

253k and still going strong!

I bought my Impala as a beater for work, and I haven't been too disappointed! Bought it at 250k miles in February of this year and besides the fact my exhaust system is shot, she's a good car. Still shifts like it's almost new, and even after past owners neglecting proper maintenance on the car she still roars to life every time. The growl of the engine is the best part of this jalopy of a car. The exterior is your typical early 2000s sedan, nothing special really but not hard on the eyes either. Guy before me hit a deer going 55mph and all that got damaged was the bumper cover. Besides the obvious plastic bumper covers, this car can take a beating. If you bought one in better condition than I did, I would definitely recommend this car, especially to younger drivers like myself who need something reliable and affordable. Gas mileage is dang good for a full size sedan. Trunk space is insane! Always impressed with older Chevys!

Very reliable

This car gets you from point a to point b. It?s a good car with a decent mpg so you won?t have to fill up constantly . It?s not an expensive car .

Third Car I've ever owned.

It has just enough legroom for a giant person like myself (7'0/300 pounds). When it comes to comfort, the car easily fit five people and a dog. I dislike the center console, but it was functional. The radio was very poor quality when we bought it, but the car comes equipped with a amp and subwoofer, and it is supremely high quality sound. This car has put up with 100 mile round trips daily, and it still works, despite us not taking great care of it. We have had to replace a lot of parts in the engine, partially because we didn't keep it up to standards, but also partially because of it's age. I would highly recommend this as a first time vehicle, or a high schooler vehicle, if you can get it for under $3,000.

Overall nice, but...

Great car for everything

We bought our Impala over a year ago and we still love it. Great for tall and plus size people. Four adults can travel out to dinner in comfort without feeling cramped. The trunk is enormous holds my roommates wheelchair plus and months worth of groceries. It could get better gas mileage but it is a very big car. It drives and maneuvers excellent in tight parking lots without seeming like a boat. I would buy another one tomorrow. The only real con about the car is the very dim interior lights.
