The 2004 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan that was part of the eighth generation of the Impala, which ran from 2000 to 2005. Known for its spacious interior and comfortable ride, the Impala offered a practical and affordable option for families and fleet buyers. Key trims included the base model, LS, and SS. At the time, prices ranged approximately from $20,000 to $27,000 new. Its popularity stemmed from its blend of affordability, practicality, and traditional American sedan appeal.

The Good

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala offered a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. Its available V6 engines provided adequate performance. While not overly stylish, its simple design had a certain appeal. For emotional buyers, the Impala name carried a legacy, representing traditional American motoring. It also presents good value on the used car market.

The Bad

Potential issues to watch out for include transmission problems, particularly with the 3.8L V6, and electrical issues. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. What Problems Does the 2004 Chevrolet Impala Have?

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala has a history of reported issues, particularly regarding its powertrain and electrical systems. Transmission problems, especially with the 4T65-E automatic transmission paired with the 3.8L V6, are a common concern. Symptoms include slipping, harsh shifting, and complete failure. Electrical problems can manifest as issues with the power windows, door locks, and instrument panel. Some owners have reported problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS).
Rust is also a concern, especially on the undercarriage and body panels in areas with road salt exposure.
Recalls for the 2004 Impala have included issues related to the fuel system, potentially leading to fuel leaks. The OnStar system has also been subject to recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the transmission, the potential for rust, and the durability of some interior components. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial to maximizing the lifespan of a 2004 Impala.

How long will the 2004 Chevrolet Impala last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Chevrolet Impala can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone with regular oil changes, timely repairs, and preventative maintenance. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting issues like transmission fluid changes or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan.
Weaknesses over time include the aforementioned transmission issues, rust development, and wear and tear on interior components like seat upholstery and plastic trim. Electrical gremlins can also become more prevalent as the car ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala featured basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems.
Driver-assistance features were limited. Cruise control was available on LS and SS models. The OnStar system was an optional feature, providing emergency assistance and remote services.
Safety features included front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available, and traction control was optional on some models.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally showed good performance for frontal impacts. However, side-impact protection was not as strong. It's essential to check specific NHTSA ratings for the 2004 model year.
Optional features included power seats, leather upholstery, and a sunroof. Overall, the 2004 Impala focused on providing a comfortable and practical driving experience rather than cutting-edge technology.

2004 Chevrolet Impala Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Chevrolet Impala ranged from approximately $20,000 for the base model to around $27,000 for the SS. As a used car, prices now vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $2,000 to $7,000. Depreciation has been significant due to the vehicle's age and common mechanical issues.
Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition (rust-free is a major plus), mileage, maintenance records, and whether it's an SS model. The SS trim commands a higher premium due to its performance-oriented features.

2004 Chevrolet Impala Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala is generally considered economical to insure due to its age and market value. Fuel costs are moderate, especially with the 3.4L V6. However, maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While routine maintenance is affordable, potential transmission issues and electrical problems can lead to significant expenses. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the vehicle's condition and how well it has been maintained.

Insurance for a 2004 Chevrolet Impala is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Chevrolet Impala Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala competed against vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus, and Chrysler Sebring. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Impala generally falls short in terms of long-term reliability and resale value. The Taurus offered a similar American sedan experience, but the Impala's interior was often considered more spacious.
In terms of features, the Camry and Accord often offered more advanced technology and safety features for the time. Performance-wise, the Impala SS could hold its own against some rivals, but the base and LS models were less engaging to drive.
Price-wise, the Impala was often more affordable than the Japanese rivals, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. If reliability is a top priority, a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord from the same year would be a better alternative, despite potentially costing more upfront. The Buick LeSabre, sharing a similar platform, is a comparable alternative offering a more luxurious ride.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Chevrolet Impala a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Chevrolet Impala is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious and comfortable used sedan. It's worth buying if you prioritize affordability over long-term reliability and are prepared for potential maintenance costs. A well-maintained LS model offers a good balance of features and price. The SS trim is desirable for performance enthusiasts, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase for rust, transmission issues, and electrical problems. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic before committing to a purchase.
