Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2001 Chevrolet Impala marked the return of the legendary nameplate after a hiatus. This full-size sedan offered a spacious interior and a comfortable ride. Built on the W-body platform, it was available from 2000-2005 in this generation. Key trims included the base model and the LS. New, the Impala's price ranged from around $20,000 to $25,000. Its popularity stemmed from its affordability, reliability, and practicality as a family car.
The Good

The 2001 Impala offered a blend of advantages. Its reliable 3.8L V6 engine delivered adequate performance for daily driving. The spacious cabin and comfortable ride appealed to practical buyers seeking a family-friendly car. Its affordable price made it an attractive value proposition, while the Impala name evoked a sense of nostalgia.

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2001 Impala included potential issues with the intake manifold gasket, which could lead to coolant leaks. Other concerns involved the ABS system, particularly the wheel speed sensors. Rust could also be a problem in areas with harsh winters. The interior plastics were often criticized for their quality.

What Problems Does the 2001 Chevrolet Impala Have?

The 2001 Chevrolet Impala, while generally reliable, had some frequently reported problems. The most common issue was the failure of the intake manifold gasket, especially on models equipped with the 3.8L V6 engine. This could lead to coolant leaks and overheating. Another prevalent problem involved the anti-lock braking system (ABS), with reports of malfunctioning wheel speed sensors triggering the ABS light and affecting braking performance.

Other long-term reliability concerns included rust, particularly in areas that used road salt. Interior components, especially the plastic trim, were prone to cracking and wear. Electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows and door locks, were also reported.

While specific recalls related directly to the 2001 model year might be limited, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any safety recalls that may have been issued. Early model years of this generation Impala (2000-2002) tended to have a higher incidence of reported problems compared to later years (2003-2005), likely due to design flaws that were subsequently addressed.

How long will the 2001 Chevrolet Impala last?

With proper maintenance, a 2001 Chevrolet Impala could easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners have reported getting 15-20 years of service from their vehicles. However, long-term durability depended heavily on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, coolant flushes (to mitigate intake manifold gasket issues), and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Weaknesses over time often included corrosion, especially in regions with harsh winters, and potential failures of electrical components and the ABS system. Neglecting maintenance significantly shortened the lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2001 Chevrolet Impala featured relatively basic tech and entertainment for its time. Standard equipment included an AM/FM radio with a cassette player. The LS trim often added a CD player. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available.

Safety features included dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option or standard on the LS trim, and side-impact door beams. Optional features included traction control.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally favorable. The Impala typically received good scores in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted tests, and the Impala generally performed adequately in their evaluations. The 2001 Impala was not equipped with modern safety technologies like electronic stability control or advanced airbag systems, reflecting the safety standards of its era. It relied on basic structural design and occupant restraint systems to protect passengers in the event of a collision.

2001 Chevrolet Impala Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2001 Chevrolet Impala ranged from approximately $20,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim level and options. In today's used market, a 2001 Impala can be found for anywhere between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has any outstanding mechanical issues. Clean, well-maintained examples with lower mileage command a higher price, but even those are relatively inexpensive due to age.

2001 Chevrolet Impala Cost of Ownership

The 2001 Chevrolet Impala is generally considered an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to the car's age and value. Fuel economy is reasonable for a full-size sedan of its era. Maintenance costs can be moderate, but potential repairs, such as the intake manifold gasket or ABS issues, can add up. Parts are generally readily available and affordable. Overall, the Impala is not costly to own, especially if you are willing to perform some basic maintenance yourself.

2001 Chevrolet Impala Insurance

Insurance for a 2001 Chevrolet Impala is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2001 Chevrolet Impala Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2001 Chevrolet Impala competed with vehicles like the Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon, and Chrysler Concorde. Compared to the Taurus, the Impala offered similar performance and interior space, but arguably had a more reliable engine (particularly the 3.8L V6). The Avalon offered superior reliability and a more refined driving experience but came at a higher price point. The Chrysler Concorde provided a more stylish design but was often less reliable than the Impala.

In terms of features, the Impala was generally on par with its competitors, offering a similar range of options. However, its interior materials were often considered less luxurious than those found in the Avalon or some versions of the Concorde.

Alternatives to the 2001 Impala include a well-maintained Toyota Avalon for greater reliability and refinement, or a Buick LeSabre, which shared the same platform as the Impala but often offered a more comfortable ride and slightly more upscale features. If budget is the primary concern, the Impala remains a decent option, but be prepared for potential maintenance needs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2001 Chevrolet Impala a Good Sedan?

The 2001 Chevrolet Impala is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and spacious used car. It's a good option for families or individuals needing a comfortable commuter vehicle. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained LS trim with the 3.8L V6 engine is preferable. Avoid models with excessive rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial to identify potential issues like intake manifold leaks or ABS problems. If you need a cheap, basic, and relatively dependable vehicle, the 2001 Impala can be a worthwhile choice.

It was okay!

The car was front wheel drive and wasn't great in snow even with good tires. It was comfortable driving and I sold it in 2009. But the car started to have issues with the new owner after two years.

I LOVE my Impala.

I bought my 2001 Impala in 2000, right off showroom floor. It has 238,000 miles on it and still runs great. It has a great engine - my mechanic says it’s the best engine the Impala could have. I’ve always maintained it well, kept it in garage and allowed no one else to drive it. Had all regular maintenance at dealer while under warranty but since then, I’ve used a private mechanic. I’ve rented a new Impala but don’t like the design as well as my 2001. I have to get a new car for practical reasons. How much longer can a 19 & 1/2 yr old car keep going? And as a 67 yr old woman with “0” mechanical ability I need a car that I won’t have to worry about. I wish I didn’t need to get a new one. I live on a fixed income and don’t want a car payment.

first car

This was probably my second favorite vehicle purchase. This car was an auction find and lasted me about 3 years (with very little maintenance kept up). It ran great, drove great, had an ?okay? mpg overall. I loved it, if only it had better mileage & more adjustability in the seats (seat sat down kind of low to the floorboard)
