Rating: 4.10
Based on 76 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan, part of the eighth generation (2006-2016). It's known for its spacious interior and comfortable ride. Key trims included the base LS, the mid-range LT, and the top-tier LTZ. New, it ranged from around $21,000 to $28,000. Its popularity stemmed from its practicality, affordability, and reputation as a reliable fleet vehicle often used as a rental car, demonstrating its robust nature.
The Good

The 2009 Impala offers a comfortable ride and a spacious cabin, appealing to practical buyers seeking a family sedan. Its straightforward design and reputation for reliability add to its appeal. While not a performance car, its adequate power provides confident acceleration, and its affordability makes it a strong value proposition. The comfortable interior caters to those seeking relaxed journeys.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2009 Impala include its somewhat dated interior styling and the base model's lack of features. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues, especially with higher mileage vehicles. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates. Some drivers find the handling less engaging than competitors. Check for electrical problems, such as those affecting the power windows and door locks.

What Problems Does the 2009 Chevrolet Impala Have?

The 2009 Chevrolet Impala has a history of reported problems, particularly regarding the transmission. Some owners have experienced issues with hard shifting, slipping, or complete transmission failure, especially in higher mileage vehicles. Electrical issues are also common, including problems with power windows, door locks, and the security system.
Another area of concern is the engine's variable valve timing (VVT) system on the 3.9L V6, which can sometimes develop issues leading to reduced performance and engine noise. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is also a potential long-term reliability concern. Recalls for the 2009 Impala have included issues related to the brake lights and fuel system. Owners should check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability is generally considered average; with proper maintenance, it can last a reasonable time, but neglecting maintenance can lead to accelerated wear and tear on critical components. Particular attention should be paid to the cooling system to prevent overheating, which can damage the engine and transmission.

How long will the 2009 Chevrolet Impala last?

With good maintenance, a 2009 Chevrolet Impala can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 15 years or longer. However, mileage and lifespan heavily depend on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely transmission fluid replacements, and cooling system flushes are crucial. Weaknesses over time include potential rust issues (especially in northern climates), wear and tear on suspension components (struts, shocks, and bushings), and potential electrical problems as wiring ages. The transmission is often a weak point, and preventive maintenance is highly recommended to extend its life. Ignoring these issues will significantly shorten the car's lifespan.

Negative Owner Reviews

It's met my needs, has lots of room, nice silver color, very good on gas,the flex fuel makes it cheap to fill it up and lasts for about 2 weeks. good speakers.

The price is not outrageous fortune car. It's only problem I have is the car can get crammed but other than that is is a good car
Demetrious the Carnosaur
My experience is with an 09 Chevrolet Impala 3.5 V6 LT. Overall the car is dated in every way and because of that it makes the powertrain great and everything else boring. The 4spd auto is refreshing to more modern 6,7,8, and 9spd transmissions. The styling of the exterior plain and that carries over to the interior. My favorite thing about it is the value of the car. If your looking for bang for the buck and a strong powertrain this has great car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Chevrolet Impala offered a relatively basic tech and entertainment package for its time. Standard features included a CD player with an auxiliary input jack and OnStar. Higher trims offered features like a premium sound system and remote start. Driver-assistance features were limited; ABS and traction control were standard, but more advanced features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available. Safety features included front and side airbags for front occupants and side curtain airbags for both rows.
Optional features included heated front seats (LTZ) and a sunroof. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA were generally good, with five stars in frontal and side-impact crash tests for the driver and passenger. The IIHS gave the Impala a "Good" rating in frontal offset crash tests. While the 2009 Impala was reasonably safe for its era, it lacks the advanced safety tech found in modern vehicles. The infotainment system is also dated compared to contemporary standards, lacking features like Bluetooth audio streaming or smartphone integration.

2009 Chevrolet Impala Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Chevrolet Impala ranged from approximately $21,000 for the base LS to around $28,000 for the top-tier LTZ. As of today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Impala experienced significant depreciation due to its initial affordability and large production numbers, including fleet sales. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, accident history, and the presence of desirable features like leather seats or a sunroof. Models with well-documented maintenance records command higher prices.

2009 Chevrolet Impala Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Chevrolet Impala is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate due to its commonality and safety ratings. Fuel economy is reasonable for a full-size sedan. Maintenance costs are relatively low, as parts are readily available and repairs are generally straightforward. However, potential transmission issues and electrical problems could lead to higher repair bills. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance; neglecting repairs will lead to costlier problems down the road. Overall, it offers decent value in terms of running costs.

2009 Chevrolet Impala Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Chevrolet Impala is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Chevrolet Impala Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Chevrolet Impala competed with vehicles like the Toyota Avalon, Ford Taurus, and Chrysler 300. In terms of performance, the Impala's V6 engines were adequate, but the Avalon offered a smoother and more refined driving experience. The Taurus provided more modern styling and available all-wheel drive. Regarding features, the Impala was generally less well-equipped than the Avalon or Taurus at similar price points, especially in base trims.
Reliability is a mixed bag. The Impala has a decent reputation, but transmission issues are a concern. The Avalon is known for its exceptional reliability, making it a strong alternative for buyers prioritizing dependability. The Chrysler 300 offered bolder styling and available V8 power, appealing to those seeking a more premium experience.
Price-wise, the Impala was often more affordable than the Avalon or 300. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Avalon is a superior choice. For those seeking more modern features and styling, the Ford Taurus is worth considering. The Chrysler 300 offers a more luxurious experience, albeit at a higher price point. If budget is the primary concern, and potential transmission repairs are factored into the equation, the Impala can still be a reasonable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Chevrolet Impala a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Chevrolet Impala is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious and comfortable sedan. It's a worthwhile purchase *used*, provided it's been well-maintained and inspected for potential transmission or electrical issues. The LT trim offers a better balance of features and value compared to the base LS. However, if reliability is the top priority, consider a Toyota Avalon. If you need all-wheel drive or prefer more modern styling, explore the Ford Taurus. The Impala excels as an affordable, no-frills transportation option, especially if you can find one with a comprehensive service history. Be prepared for potential repairs, especially to the transmission.

Owning a car...

I bought the car used. Did a full tune up. Radiator flush. Had to change the transmission. Replaced the gas pedal. Have put brakes on four times and got to replace them again as we speak. Have purchased three fobs neither worked. Actuators terrible for this car. Replaced power steering pump and racking pinion. Can't get the tire pressure light off.

It's okay

It lasted 10 years. My grandmother owned this car from 20019-2015, then I owned it from 2015-2020. It started having issues with transmission in year 2019.

The First Car after my Heart

I received this as my first car and for six years it held up so well! I drove this to and from high school then commuted to college 55 miles one-way every day. It lasted the journey from Utah to Texas without blowing out the AC during the summer. Honestly, this car was awesome and I would always get an Impala because of it.
