Rating: 4.28
Based on 35 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Chrysler 300 is a full-size sedan that draws inspiration from classic American luxury cars. Known for its bold styling, particularly its imposing grille and substantial presence, the 300 debuted in 2005 and continued its run with the 2008 model year. Key trims included the base model, Touring, Limited, and the high-performance 300C. Pricing ranged from around $25,000 to $40,000 when new. Its popularity stemmed from its blend of upscale styling at a more accessible price point compared to European luxury sedans.
The Good

The 2008 Chrysler 300 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Its powerful engine options provide satisfying performance, while its spacious interior offers a comfortable ride. The bold design makes a statement, appealing to emotional buyers. For practical buyers, the 300 provides good value for its size and features, although reliability and fuel efficiency can be concerns.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2008 Chrysler 300 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Chrysler 300 often revolve around electrical issues. Owners have reported problems with the car's computer system, which can cause a variety of symptoms, including malfunctioning gauges, lights, and power windows. Suspension components, particularly ball joints and control arm bushings, are also known to wear out relatively quickly, especially on models driven in areas with poor road conditions.

Recalls for the 2008 Chrysler 300 have addressed issues such as potential problems with the fuel tank, which could increase the risk of a fire in the event of a rear-end collision. Other recalls have related to the airbag system and possible defects in the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's important to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to verify any outstanding recalls.

Long-term reliability can be a concern, with some owners experiencing issues with the transmission and engine over time. The 2.7L V6 engine has been known to suffer from sludge buildup if oil changes are not performed regularly, potentially leading to engine failure. Proper maintenance and regular inspections are crucial for mitigating these risks. Model years prior to 2008 had similar issues, so checking service records is essential before purchasing a used 2008 Chrysler 300.

How long will the 2008 Chrysler 300 last?

A 2008 Chrysler 300, with proper maintenance, can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone with diligent care. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Weaknesses over time commonly involve suspension wear, electrical glitches, and potential transmission issues, particularly if regular servicing is skipped. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters.

Bought this car from one owner who was a dealer. This car runs great. It is mechanically sound. The only issues I had was electrical that was eaten by rodents. Excellent highway gas mileage. I recommend it to anyone that travels. Keep in mind this is a Highway 300 Touring. It's not recommended for going back and forth in the city.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Chrysler 300 offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims featured premium audio systems, sometimes with satellite radio and navigation options. Optional features included a sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, and upgraded leather upholstery.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles. Some models included rear parking sensors, but advanced features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring were not available. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and electronic stability control. Side-curtain airbags were also standard equipment.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally awarded the 2008 Chrysler 300 four or five stars for frontal and side impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it "Good" ratings in some categories, but results varied. It's advisable to consult both NHTSA and IIHS websites for specific crash-test data relevant to the 2008 model year. The availability of optional safety features like side airbags could influence the overall safety rating.

2008 Chrysler 300 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Chrysler 300 ranged from approximately $25,000 for the base model to around $40,000 for the 300C or SRT8. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The 300 has experienced significant depreciation due to factors such as age, higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals, and fluctuating fuel prices that impact demand for large sedans. Vehicles in excellent condition with low mileage and a clean title will command higher resale values. The high-performance SRT8 models also tend to hold their value better than other trims.

2008 Chrysler 300 Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Chrysler 300 is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance rates can be average to slightly above average, depending on the driver's record and coverage. Fuel costs, especially for V8 models, are higher than more fuel-efficient cars. Maintenance and repair costs can also be significant, given potential issues with electrical components and suspension. Budgeting for regular maintenance and potential repairs is crucial for long-term ownership. It's not the most economical choice, but the initial purchase price may offset some of these costs.

2008 Chrysler 300 Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Chrysler 300 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Chrysler 300 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Chrysler 300 competed with full-size sedans like the Ford Crown Victoria, Toyota Avalon, Buick Lucerne, and Chevrolet Impala. In terms of styling, the 300 stood out with its bold, imposing design, whereas the Crown Victoria was more traditional. The Avalon offered superior reliability, while the Impala was a more budget-friendly option. The Lucerne prioritized comfort and a quiet ride.

Performance-wise, the 300C and SRT8 models offered significantly more power than most rivals. However, the Avalon generally delivered better fuel economy. Reliability was a weak point for the Chrysler 300 compared to the Toyota Avalon and Buick Lucerne. Feature-wise, the 300 was competitive, offering a range of options and trims.

Alternatives to the 2008 Chrysler 300 include the Toyota Avalon for its reliability and comfort, or the Buick Lucerne for a similar focus on luxury and ride quality. If performance is a top priority, a newer Dodge Charger (related to the 300) might be a better choice. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Chrysler 300 a Good Sedan?

The 2008 Chrysler 300 is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish, full-size sedan with a powerful engine option (especially the 300C or SRT8) at an affordable price point on the used market. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential reliability issues and are prepared for regular maintenance. Purchasing a well-maintained example with comprehensive service records is crucial. A lower mileage example from a reliable seller is preferable. Avoid models with known accident history or signs of neglect. It's not a suitable choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency or rock-solid reliability above all else.

No issues in 10 years

Bought this car used with 10,000 miles in 2008. Other than battery, tires and oil changes we have not needed to put any money into this car. The leather interior has held up and looks brand new, the dash and gauges are dated no though. Mileage and performance are poor as the car has a v-6 and the car is a BOAT! 250 horses struggle to get the car down the road. Mileage isn't great and the gas tank is HUGE. I generally spend over $35 on a fill up, my cruze is $22 when empty. Luxury ride and comfort are paramount and the car handles well for being a tank. Reliability has been good as we are nearing 75,000 miles and no issues. Paint has held up well and the car still looks cool.
