Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Jeep Renegade marked the second year of this subcompact SUV, blending Jeep's off-road heritage with urban sensibilities. Available as a 4-door SUV, trims included Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Its boxy design, quirky styling, and available Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 system set it apart. Pricing ranged from around $18,000 to $27,000 new, appealing to those seeking adventure and distinctive looks.
The Good

The 2016 Jeep Renegade offers a unique blend of Jeep's rugged image and city-friendly practicality. It appeals to emotional buyers with its distinctive design and off-road capability. Practical advantages include decent fuel economy with the smaller engine, comfortable interior, and good value for its price point. Its compact size makes it easy to maneuver and park.

The Bad

Some weaknesses of the 2016 Jeep Renegade include the 2.4L engine's somewhat lackluster performance and potential oil consumption issues. The nine-speed automatic transmission has also been reported to have some rough shifting issues. Reliability can be a concern, so checking the vehicle history report and getting a pre-purchase inspection are recommended.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Renegade Have?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade has faced several frequently reported problems. A common concern revolves around the 2.4L Tigershark engine, with owners reporting excessive oil consumption. This can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed promptly. The nine-speed automatic transmission is another area of concern, with some owners experiencing rough shifting, hesitation, and occasional failure. Some have also reported electrical issues.

Recalls for the 2016 model year have included issues related to the transmission, airbags, and electronic stability control. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recall notices before purchase. Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with the aforementioned engine and transmission issues. Regular maintenance and addressing any problems early are vital to extending the vehicle's lifespan. Before buying, review the vehicle history for past repairs and maintenance.

How long will the 2016 Jeep Renegade last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2016 Jeep Renegade can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. However, long-term durability depends significantly on maintenance habits. The most significant weaknesses over time relate to the 2.4L engine's potential oil consumption and the nine-speed automatic transmission's reliability. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and prompt attention to warning signs are essential for maximizing longevity. Neglecting maintenance can substantially shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

I've had my ‘15 latitude, for a year. T-bones a car, last week, and they crumple like a beer can… In other words: had my wife get a ‘16 75th edition TODAY!! Yes, ramen diet, for a few years, + her “special edition” doesn't have heated seats, or a heated wheel 😖 My latitude does!! I wouldn't look at different 💯
Renegade
Interior is absolutely beautiful. Still a big enough vehicle that it doesn't feel like a regular sized car but not a huge suv. Still a gas guzzler though.
Charles
This vehicle does everything I want it to, and more.! So far I am more than pleased with it. Nice looking, nice option package, comfortable ride for a smaller vehicle.. Nice ride.!
Negative Owner Reviews

This car should be on recall. It had motor replaced at 18000. Has 50000 on it already leaking oil. Has roof issues. Plastic sides are falling off. Indicator lights keep having problems. I would call these things a mechanical nightmare.
Mad consumers
It sucked and jeep didn't back it on a 2020 jeep gladiator Rubicon. The car dealership was crap and jeep was just as unhelpful. Very disappointed

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its class. Standard on higher trims is the Uconnect infotainment system, featuring a touchscreen display (usually 5 or 6.5 inches), Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not available in 2016, but some units might have been updated). Available entertainment features include a premium BeatsAudio sound system. Driver-assistance features were limited, but options included a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning.

Safety features include standard airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) results vary, but some models achieved good ratings in certain categories. Specific ratings should be verified for the exact configuration. The 75th Anniversary edition includes unique interior accents and premium sound system upgrade.

2016 Jeep Renegade Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Jeep Renegade is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Jeep Renegade Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade competes with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Chevrolet Trax, and Fiat 500X (which shares its platform). In terms of off-road performance, the Renegade Trailhawk stands out, surpassing most rivals. The Honda HR-V offers superior fuel economy and a more spacious interior. The Mazda CX-3 provides a more engaging driving experience. The Chevrolet Trax is often more affordable.

Reliability is a key consideration. The Honda HR-V generally has a better reliability reputation. The Renegade's unique styling and available 4x4 are its strengths, but its reliability record lags behind some competitors. The Fiat 500X, being mechanically similar, shares some of the same reliability concerns. Depending on priorities, the HR-V or CX-3 might be better choices for those prioritizing reliability and fuel efficiency, while the Renegade appeals to those valuing Jeep's image and off-road capability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jeep Renegade a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade is ideal for buyers seeking a small, stylish SUV with a touch of Jeep's off-road DNA. It's particularly appealing to those who value distinctive styling and the *idea* of adventure. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and risk tolerance. A used 2016 Renegade can be a good value if thoroughly inspected and well-maintained. The Trailhawk trim is recommended for those prioritizing off-road capability. However, potential buyers should be aware of the reported reliability concerns and carefully consider a pre-purchase inspection and vehicle history report. If reliability is a top priority, exploring alternatives like the Honda HR-V might be advisable.

Beautiful car but after six months turbo went up

Bought my (white) 2016 Renegade Sport, manual 6 speed, w/ the black torn flag decals that stands for all fallen soldiers w/ all the trimmings beautiful carfrom Carmax 2nd Owner super clean 2 yrs. Ago My boyfriend whom was on my insurance full coverage thank the lord, high-droplanned into a pole and it was a tiny little dent in my hood completely drivable. I drove it for about 2 months before I claimed it and they totalled it out. I couldn't believe it! But I want to state one other BIG issue is that My Turbo went up after 6 months. Yes, I did get better gas mileage, but it also could have harmed my engine. Therefore, I'm thinking that may have been another reason why they totaled it out. It was a nice Payday. I got all my money back because of the inflation. When I bought it. We hadn't gone into such a recession... If I was to do it again I would not have bought another. Expensive parts It was always reliable.I will give it that , but after the Turbo went up and then I heard that others had the same exact problem.I looked into it I'm hoping that there's a recall on this.Because it was a big issue not just with me With others I know that also have the same car.

Just Okay

This vehicle is decent but nothing special. It's good for snow and winter conditions. Interior is too snug for taller people and the ride is rough. Styling is very well done but gas mileage is just okay. It's a sturdy vehicle because it weighs 3200 pounds which might account for the okay mileage and mediocre performance.

Great Car, I like it

The car is what I was looking for. Its my favorite color and its a upgrade from what I used to own. I wanted something bigger and the Jeep is definitely something I was looking for. The interior is great, the outer interior looks nice too.

Renegade Trailhawk 4X4

Very nice and quiet to drive, gas mileage was as advertised which is excellent, I have no reason to use the 4X4 yet due to no wintery conditions, but hey had to try the seat heaters and yes they work great. This model Renegade "Trailhawk" 4X4 is fully loaded, interior is super clean and looks far better then most SUV's. Nice center control center all touch screen, very strong media player, hand's free phone calling, even has ability to show text messages someone sends while driving. heated mirrors, Full size spare tire hidden in cargo area, auto lights , fog lights, many interior lights , 2 plugs that 110 volt to run things like a computer or phone charger and yes usb ports as well! So much more!!!!!
