The interior was spacious and comfortable for long journeys. Though not the most efficient, it provided decent value for its capabilities. It projected a sense of ruggedness and reliability.
The Bad

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Have?
Specific to long-term reliability, the Super Select 4WD system, while robust, requires regular maintenance to ensure proper functioning. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to issues with engagement and disengagement. Oil leaks, especially from the valve cover gaskets, are also a common issue as the vehicle ages. Suspension components, such as ball joints and bushings, are subject to wear and tear, requiring replacement over time.
While specific recalls for the 2000 model year should be verified with official sources like the NHTSA, it's essential to check for any outstanding safety recalls related to airbags or other critical systems before purchasing a used Montero. Owners should also be aware of potential issues related to fuel injectors and catalytic converters, which can affect emissions and performance.
How long will the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. It had power steering and anti-lock brakes (ABS) as standard. Safety features included front airbags. Optional features could include a sunroof and heated seats on the Limited trim. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA or IIHS should be researched specifically for the 2000 model year to determine its performance in frontal and side-impact collisions. Generally, SUVs of this era provided a decent level of protection due to their size and construction. However, modern vehicles typically have superior crashworthiness due to advancements in safety technology and structural design. Given its age, potential buyers should prioritize vehicles with well-documented maintenance records and evidence of proper care.

How Does the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Regarding features, the Montero was competitive for its time, but some rivals offered more advanced technology or more refined interiors. In terms of price, the Montero was often positioned competitively, offering good value for its capabilities. However, the higher maintenance costs and potential reliability issues could offset the initial price advantage.
Alternatives to the Montero include the Toyota 4Runner (for reliability and off-road capability), the Jeep Grand Cherokee (for a wider range of options), and the Nissan Pathfinder (for a similar blend of on-road comfort and off-road ability). The 4Runner is arguably a better choice for long-term reliability, while the Grand Cherokee may be preferred for its more luxurious options. The Pathfinder provides a similar experience at a potentially lower price point.

Best car I've ever ownedThere is a cult following for this vehicle . The generation called the 2.5 generation (made from 98-00) is very rare and very desirable. They still command great sums of money.

Posh, Reliable SUVGreat vehicle. Goes well in snow/mud and is a champ in tight off-road maneuvers. Handles well on road for such a high profile vehicle, although this is no sports car. I travel a lot with friends/family and this is a great vehicle to do so in. Love the super sized sunroof, heated seats, mitsu/infinity sound system, passenger space, and best of all the view over traffic. It's awesome! I do wish however that Mitsubishi would've offered a V8, or even a high output V6 such as Nissan's 3.5 240hp/265lb. ft offering. I'm dropping a 4.0 300hp Lexus motor in mine and updating the suspension as well. Great truck, utterly reliable, and safe too.
