It's a four-door SUV known for its off-road prowess. Key trims included the base model and the Limited. When new, the Montero ranged from approximately $30,000 to $37,000. Its blend of on-road comfort and serious off-road capability made it popular.

What Problems Does the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero include issues with the automatic transmission, such as slipping or harsh shifting, especially at higher mileages. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the power windows and locks, have also been reported. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas with heavy road salt usage, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and valve problems, can arise as the vehicle ages.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the transmission and engine. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes, is crucial for mitigating these issues. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arm bushings, may also require replacement over time due to wear and tear. Checking for recalls is essential; resources like the NHTSA website can provide information on any safety-related recalls issued for the 2002 Montero. Some older models may have been subject to recalls related to fuel tank issues or other safety concerns, so it's worth investigating the vehicle's history.

Specific model year variations in terms of reported problems are not significant, with most issues consistent across the 2001-2006 generation. However, earlier models in the generation might exhibit these issues more frequently due to accumulated mileage and wear.

How long will the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero last?

With good maintenance, a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and transmission servicing, is crucial. Long-term durability weaknesses include potential rust issues, electrical problems, and transmission wear. The 3.5L V6 engine is generally robust but needs regular maintenance. The Super Select 4WD system is durable but requires occasional servicing. Vehicles neglected in terms of maintenance will likely have significantly shorter lifespans.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Mitsubishi Montero offered a relatively basic level of tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included a CD player, air conditioning, and power windows and locks. The Limited trim added a premium audio system. Driver-assistance features were limited, with no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) available.

Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS) and front airbags. Optional features included a sunroof and heated seats (Limited trim). The Montero also featured a robust four-wheel-drive system with a locking rear differential for enhanced off-road capability.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero were generally good. It received good ratings in frontal and side impact tests. However, it's crucial to consult specific NHTSA reports for detailed ratings.

The available tech and entertainment features were typical for the era, focusing on basic functionality. The emphasis was more on utility and off-road capability than cutting-edge technology. Modern buyers should not expect features like smartphone integration, navigation systems, or advanced safety aids commonly found in newer vehicles.

2002 Mitsubishi Montero Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero ranged from around $30,000 to $37,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect prices from $3,000 to $10,000 for well-maintained examples. Depreciation has been substantial due to the vehicle's age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance records, rust presence, and mileage. Lower mileage, well-maintained Monteros with minimal rust command the highest prices. The Montero's off-road capability does maintain some appeal, influencing its used value.

2002 Mitsubishi Montero Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero are relatively moderate due to its age. Fuel costs are high, with poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be above average due to the vehicle's age and potential for needing specialized parts. Rust repair and potential transmission or engine issues can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, the 2002 Montero is not an economical vehicle to own, especially compared to newer, more fuel-efficient SUVs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2002 Mitsubishi Montero competed against SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. In terms of off-road performance, the Montero was comparable to the 4Runner and Grand Cherokee. However, the 4Runner generally enjoys a better reputation for long-term reliability. The Pathfinder offered similar features and a slightly lower price point when new, but its off-road capability wasn't as strong.

The Montero's fuel economy was worse than some rivals. The interior was comfortable, but the technology was dated compared to later model years of its competitors. Used market prices for the Montero are generally lower than for comparable 4Runners, reflecting the Toyota's stronger resale value.

Alternatives to the Montero include the Toyota 4Runner (for superior reliability but higher price), the Nissan Pathfinder (for a more affordable but less capable option), or the Jeep Grand Cherokee (for a blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability). If reliability is a primary concern, the 4Runner is a better choice. If budget is a major factor, the Pathfinder might be preferable. The Montero offers a reasonable balance, but prospective buyers should carefully inspect for rust and prioritize maintenance records.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero a Good Wagon?

The 2002 Mitsubishi Montero is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a capable off-road SUV. It's best suited for those who understand older vehicles and are willing to perform maintenance or repairs themselves. It's worth buying used, *if* a thorough inspection reveals minimal rust and a solid maintenance history. The Limited trim offers more features, but condition is more important than trim level. Avoid examples with extensive rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. The Montero can provide years of reliable service if well-maintained, but it's not a worry-free purchase.

Best Car On The Road

The 2002 Mitsubishi Montero LTD is most apparently the BEST car on the road. I have owned over 100 cars in my life time, and have owned this car for only ten years, it has over 230,000 miles on it now, and runs fresh as the day I bought it, when you hit a chug hole on the freeway its nothing, only a blip, very smooth ride, it will stop on a dime, and I mean a DIME, I got plenty of stories how it stops, it would be legendary if I told you. It also eats snow for breakfast, as if snow is nothing,...at ALL. Buy one you will never regret it.

heating and electronic issues

Overheating Hi, I have a 02 Mitsubishi montero , it over heats while driving. There is no coolant leaking and the temp gauge goes back and forth from hot to in between hot and cold. What could be the problem? Just got my thermostat replaced so that wasn’t the problem.

Mitsubishi Montero--Best SUV

My first SUV was a Toyota Landcruiser; it drove like a truck and it didn't accelerate with much power. I also got 12 miles to the gallon. When I bought my Montero, I had a baby; I bought what I thought was the safest SUV. That was in 1995. I LOVED THAT CAR so much that even though I could afford to trade "up" I never found a car that I liked better! This car had scrumptious grey leather; white exterior with silver trim, running boards (for kids and the elderly and short people) I had a funky front bumper guard with high-tech fog lights that were expensive add-ons, but made it look REALLY cool! I got 18 miles to the gallon, which I thought was pretty good the way I drive! When the car was 10 years old I "totaled" it--was told it would cost $6000 to repair-- more than it was worth. I REGRET NOT FIXING THAT CAR. I have never been happy since and I would love to find MY OLD CAR--a 1995 Mitsubishi Montero (I GAVE it "as is" to my brother-in-law) pearly white, luggage rack, tinted windows, 3rd row seats; perfect condition except for the wreck that occurred which damaged the front drivers side. At the time, after 10 years it only had 90,000 miles on it! The suspension stayed tight! The MPG never went below 18; I used regular gas; EVERYONE who saw it always asked me if it was NEW!!! Please help me find my old perfect car!

2nd Montero I have owned. This is a big heavy suv

this suv is heavy and has lexus type luxury. Great value if you don't mind 18 miles per gal. The cost per month is what you should consider. This is a great truck. I wish it had a higher quality leather like the older ones had. The alum rims are easily scratched but at 10 years old with 50,000 miles on it, its a heck of a lot better than a kia sorento for 25,000. I love it on the highway.

2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited

Excellent beautiful vehicle. I put 22" rims, and looks classy. The onlt negative is that highway miles are 14 mpg even when driven carefully.

A true Diamond

We have a 2002 Montero Limited and we bought it used with 120,000 miles. It was in very good condition and a clean carfax. Took it to Mitsubishi and had a complete lookover and the previous owner took real good care of it with not a single mechanical or electrical issue for the exception of a brake actuator which was making a chirping noise which was covered under the 150,000 mile / 10 year warranty. This SUV is very smooth...engine and transmission operate like silk and ride quality is great! Interior is spacious with quality materials and the infiniti sound system is still very nice. Interior road noise is fairly low even at highway speeds. On normal pavement ride quality is smooth and absorbs uneveness and bumps very well. Take the Montero off road..and it shines very well handling any type of off road obstacle effortless. Gas milage isn't the greatest so don't expect exceptional MPG out of this big SUV. For the price you can buy these Monteros these days...you are gettting ALOT for your money plus something that is different on the roads today...you will get looks of appreciate in the Montero. This vehicle shows that Mitsubishi can build a world class vehicle and it won't hurt your pockets at all. With a repuation of impecable relaibility, a championship racing breed and heritage...you can't go wrong with the Montero.
