Rating: 4.58
Based on 87 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Nissan Murano is a mid-size crossover SUV that debuted in its second generation for the 2009 model year. Known for its distinctive styling and comfortable ride, it offered a more premium feel than some competitors. Key trims included the S, SL, and LE. The original MSRP ranged approximately from $27,000 to $37,000. Its popularity stemmed from its unique blend of style, comfort, and available technology.
The Good

The 2009 Murano offers a smooth and responsive V6 engine providing adequate performance. Its comfortable interior and stylish design appeal to emotional buyers, while its reasonable fuel economy for its class and generally good reliability make it a practical choice. It provides a refined driving experience at a competitive price.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Nissan Murano include potential CVT transmission issues, particularly with higher mileage. Other areas to inspect are the power steering system and potential oil consumption in some engines. Suspension components and electrical systems should also be checked for wear and tear due to age.

What Problems Does the 2009 Nissan Murano Have?

The 2009 Nissan Murano has had some reported problems, with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) being the most prominent. Some owners have experienced transmission failure, requiring costly repairs or replacements. Symptoms can include slipping, hesitation, and unusual noises. Power steering issues, such as pump failure, have also been reported. Oil consumption can be a concern in some instances, requiring owners to monitor oil levels regularly.

Recalls for the 2009 Murano have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage due to a faulty fuel filler tube and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the CVT's lifespan and the potential for costly repairs as the vehicle ages. It's crucial to check the vehicle's maintenance history and perform a thorough inspection, particularly of the transmission, before purchasing a used 2009 Murano. Some sources indicate that earlier models in this generation, including the 2009, experienced more frequent CVT problems compared to later years.

How long will the 2009 Nissan Murano last?

A well-maintained 2009 Nissan Murano can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, particularly regarding the CVT fluid changes. Neglecting the CVT can significantly shorten its lifespan. Over time, suspension components (struts, bushings) may need replacement. Electrical issues, while not widespread, can arise. The interior materials generally hold up well, but leather seats may show wear with age. Overall durability is average for its class, with the transmission being the primary long-term concern.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Nissan Murano offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included keyless entry and dual-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims added Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and a Bose audio system. An optional navigation system was available on the LE trim.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but included anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control. Safety features consisted of front, side, and curtain airbags.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) generally show good performance, with the Murano earning "Good" ratings in most categories. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings varied but generally indicated good overall safety. The inclusion of optional features like the rearview camera and advanced audio system added to the appeal. While not cutting-edge by today's standards, the 2009 Murano provided a reasonable level of technology and safety for its era. Note that specific equipment varied by trim level.

2009 Nissan Murano Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Nissan Murano ranged from approximately $27,000 to $37,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $10,000 or less, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Murano has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, mileage accumulation, and the reputation of its CVT transmission. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, and whether it has any documented CVT issues. Low-mileage examples in excellent condition command a higher premium.

2009 Nissan Murano Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Nissan Murano's ownership costs can be moderate to high. Insurance premiums are generally average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, given its V6 engine, but not exceptional. Maintenance costs are typical for a vehicle of its age. However, potential CVT repairs or replacements can significantly increase long-term ownership expenses. Therefore, it's not the most economical choice, especially if the transmission requires attention. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

2009 Nissan Murano Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Nissan Murano is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Nissan Murano Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Nissan Murano competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Edge, and Chevrolet Equinox. In terms of performance, the Murano offered a stronger V6 engine than the base engines in the RAV4 and CR-V, but the Edge offered comparable power. Feature-wise, the Murano was competitive, especially in higher trims. However, the Murano's reliability is a concern compared to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, which have a stronger reputation for long-term dependability. The Ford Edge presents a similar blend of comfort and style.

In terms of price, the used Murano can be attractive, but the potential for CVT issues makes it a riskier choice than the more reliable RAV4 or CR-V, even if those alternatives cost slightly more upfront. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are better alternatives. If style and comfort are more important, and you're willing to accept some risk, the Murano could be considered, but a thorough inspection is essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Nissan Murano a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Nissan Murano is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and comfortable crossover SUV at an affordable price point on the used market. However, it's not a risk-free purchase. It's worth buying *only* if a pre-purchase inspection reveals a healthy CVT transmission and a well-maintained history. Opting for a lower mileage example that has documented transmission servicing is advisable. Due to age, buying new is obviously not an option. It's best suited for those who prioritize comfort and styling over bulletproof reliability. Potential buyers should be prepared for potential CVT repairs and factor that cost into their budget. A Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V offers more peace of mind, though potentially at a higher price.

Great sporty SUV

Great vehicle! Very reliable! Sporty! Gorgeous interior and killer Bose sound system. No problems till the car hit around 120k then I started to have problems but at that mileage problems are expected. Right sub frame needed replaced at $2500, replaced suspension $1500, replaced radiator $600. Not great on gas. I got about 17 around town and 25 on the highway but that’s pretty much what all the mid size SUV’s get.

Rear subframe will rust..EXPENSIVE REPAIR BEWARE!

This car might be good up to 100,000 miles. But mine is high mileage and a lemon. Just got hit with $2,400 subframe repair because it got rusty. It's a common issue with these Nissans because of where the ac condenser is located. Regret buying this thing. And I'm having trouble with keyless push button start. Break sensor doesn't recognize when push button start is engaged. Don't buy this car at high mileage. Go with Toyota, Lexus, or Honda.

First and best vehicle I bought

I needed a car ASAP the lot I went to didn’t have many options at first I wasn’t at all sold I even doubted my purchase driving out the lot. Man oh man I’m glad I got this vehicle going on three years now replaced the battery once repaired an axle and bearing and that’s about it. Of course also I’ve maintained fluids and all that other stuff and that’s kept my big girl strong.
