Rating: 4.86
Based on 79 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The Nissan Murano, introduced in 2002, is a mid-size crossover SUV known for its distinctive styling and comfortable ride. The 2020 model continues this tradition. Key trims include S, SV, SL, and Platinum. Its standout features include a premium interior feel and a focus on comfort over sporty handling. New pricing ranged from approximately $31,530 to $43,930. The Murano's popularity stems from its stylish design and refined driving experience.
The Good

The 2020 Nissan Murano offers a comfortable and refined ride, appealing to those seeking a relaxed driving experience (emotional). It provides a spacious interior with quality materials. Its V6 engine delivers adequate performance. From a practical standpoint, it offers decent fuel efficiency for its class and is considered generally reliable. The Murano provides good value for its features and comfort.

The Bad

The 2020 Nissan Murano's continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a potential point of concern; some owners have reported issues. Its handling is not as sporty as some competitors. The infotainment system, while functional, isn't the most modern. Finally, the rear visibility could be better. Potential buyers should have the CVT thoroughly inspected before purchase.

What Problems Does the 2020 Nissan Murano Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 Nissan Murano often revolve around the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Some owners have experienced issues such as shuddering, hesitation, or complete transmission failure. These issues can be costly to repair.
While specific recall information for the 2020 model should be verified on the NHTSA website, Nissan vehicles with CVTs have been subject to recalls in the past due to transmission-related concerns. Check for any open recalls related to the transmission, braking system, or other safety components.
Long-term reliability concerns primarily stem from the CVT's durability. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes at recommended intervals, is crucial for prolonging the transmission's life. Some owners proactively change the CVT fluid more frequently than the recommended interval. Other potential issues, though less frequent, include electrical problems and sensor malfunctions. Owners should be mindful of any unusual noises, vibrations, or warning lights and address them promptly to prevent more significant problems down the road.

How long will the 2020 Nissan Murano last?

With regular maintenance, a 2020 Nissan Murano can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. However, lifespan heavily depends on maintenance habits. The CVT is the primary long-term durability concern. Consistent and timely CVT fluid changes are critical to preventing premature failure. Other factors affecting longevity include driving conditions (city vs. highway) and climate. Neglecting routine maintenance, such as oil changes and brake service, will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Rust can also be a factor in regions with harsh winters and road salt.
Positive Owner Reviews
Kimberly Cole
I absolutely love this car, especially all the safety equipment. My only complaint is you can't see out of the rear window very well. But all the newer cars have this same problem.
Vernalynne
I bought this car right after I lost my husband. Being a senior widow, I wanted something I felt safe and secure driving. It's been 4 months and I am still thankful for the decision I made. I get 29.6 mpg which is amazing considering I have put nearly 5,000 miles on it. At the dealership everything passed inspection and oil change with flying colors. They are so kind and helpful there and I feel I can trust them completely to service my car. I wouldn't change a thing about this beautiful SUV. A pleasure to own and drive.
Liz
I love this car. It is fun to drive. I am still learning how to use everything, but I am having fun learning. It gets great gas mileage which is important since I drive 100 miles a day. I feel so spoiled with all of the features that it has.

This car was delivered with many safety features disabled and the dash clock cannot be set. Radio only has one year warranty verses the factory 3/36

2020 Nissan Murano Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Nissan Murano had a starting MSRP of around $31,530, with higher trims reaching upwards of $44,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $28,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Murano depreciates at an average rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, trim level, and location. 2020 Nissan Murano Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Nissan Murano's insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, with a combined MPG of around 23. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is fairly standard. However, potential CVT repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. 2020 Nissan Murano Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Nissan Murano is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Nissan Murano Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Nissan Murano competes with vehicles like the Honda Passport, Toyota Venza, Ford Edge, and Hyundai Santa Fe. In terms of performance, the Murano's V6 is adequate, but the Ford Edge offers more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, the Murano provides a competitive set of standard and optional equipment. However, regarding reliability, the Honda Passport and Toyota Venza generally outperform the Murano, primarily due to concerns about the CVT. The Hyundai Santa Fe presents a similar value proposition to the Murano, with comparable pricing and features, and is considered more reliable by some metrics.
While the Murano offers a comfortable and stylish ride, the Honda Passport and Toyota Venza might be better alternatives for buyers prioritizing long-term reliability. The Ford Edge is a strong contender for those seeking more powerful performance. The Hyundai Santa Fe is a good all-around choice offering a blend of features, value, and reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Nissan Murano a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Nissan Murano is ideal for buyers prioritizing comfort, style, and a relaxed driving experience over sporty handling or rugged off-road capability. It's a good choice for those who appreciate a refined interior and don't need a third-row seat. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A used 2020 Murano can be a good value if it has been well-maintained and the CVT has been properly serviced. Having a pre-purchase inspection done by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Lower trims (S or SV) offer the best value, while the Platinum trim provides more luxury features at a higher price point.

Love My Murano!

I love this SUV! The ride is smooth and amazing. The mileage and gas is great for a 6 cylinder! What a great vehicle. I bought the 2020 SV after researching. I am very happy with it. Only thing i wish the passenger seat had a lumbar seat! Other then that this car is a winner!

Unexpected Love

Didn't plan to walk out with a Murano, but very glad I did. Only have the S trim, but enjoy the safety tech package and remote start. V6 is much better power over the rogue & altima in my opinion. Tons of room in the trunk and with the seats down!
