2012 Toyota Sienna Review: Top Rated Van Offering Great Engines & Comfortable Cabin

Rating: 4.51
Based on 84 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Toyota Sienna, a minivan renowned for its reliability and practicality, entered its third generation in 2011. Its body style is, of course, a minivan, offering spacious seating and cargo capacity. Key trims included the base L, LE, XLE, and the sporty SE, along with the luxurious Limited. New, prices ranged approximately from $25,000 to $40,000. It stands out due to its available all-wheel drive and reputation for dependability, making it a popular choice for families.
The Good

The 2012 Toyota Sienna offers a blend of practicality and driving enjoyment. Its V6 engine provides adequate performance. Reliability is a major selling point. Comfort is prioritized with spacious seating and a smooth ride. While design is subjective, the SE trim offers a sporty aesthetic. It offers good value for families needing a reliable and versatile vehicle. Emotionally, it offers peace of mind; practically, it's a workhorse.

The Bad

The 2012 Toyota Sienna, while generally reliable, has some potential weaknesses. Some owners have reported issues with power door malfunctions. Premature tire wear can be a concern. Also, check for proper maintenance records, especially regarding oil changes. Rust can be a factor in colder climates. The interior, while functional, isn't the most luxurious compared to some rivals.

What Problems Does the 2012 Toyota Sienna Have?

The 2012 Toyota Sienna, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems. One common issue is with the power sliding doors, where they may fail to open or close properly. This can be due to motor issues or sensor malfunctions. Another area of concern is with premature tire wear, particularly on models with all-wheel drive. Owners should ensure proper tire inflation and regular rotations to mitigate this. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly with the rear AC unit not functioning correctly.
Recalls for the 2012 Sienna have addressed issues like potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel lines and possible problems with the power window switch. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with Toyota to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for oil leaks as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is critical to prolonging the life of these components. Some owners have also reported issues with the oxygen sensors over time, which can affect fuel economy. Addressing these issues promptly can help maintain the Sienna's reliability over its lifespan.

How long will the 2012 Toyota Sienna last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Toyota Sienna can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Owner data suggests that consistent oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles) and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires contribute significantly to longevity. Regular transmission fluid flushes (every 60,000 miles) are also vital. Long-term durability can be affected by rust in northern climates. Weaknesses over time may include increased susceptibility to oil leaks, wear on suspension components, and potential issues with the electronic systems like power doors.

After driving different mini vans, the Sienna LE V6 was by far the best value for my money. It is solidly built, quiet, and smooth. The ride is like a Lexus and it handles almost like a sedan. It's just the right size, has very comfortable seats and is loaded with technology! On my first 500+ mile trip, I averaged 28.8 mpg.

I have always owned Toyota all my life back from Africa (Nigeria) Currently I owned 2010 Toyota Venza, 2012 Toyota sienna, 2016 Toyota Highlander. Everything about Toyota is A1 . it is better than all American made cars. No disappointment . I love it 100%

This car met the needs my family and I have. Big enough for 2 teenagers, 2 car seats, 2 adults and a wheelchair. And still room.
Negative Owner Reviews

-3rd row seats rattle when left up - this started after 1000 miles and the dealership says "they don't know anything about this". This is clearly outlined in multiple blogs for the 2011 model and the 2012 model still has the same problem. I have had to fold the seats down to make the car worth driving -console is small, as is the rearview camera size of the screen -Seats are very comfortable -Drives very well, handles like a car

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Toyota Sienna offers a range of built-in tech and features. Standard models typically include a basic audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer upgrades like a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment options include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a widescreen display, appealing to families on long trips.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited in 2012 compared to modern vehicles. Available features included parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring on higher trims. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags.

Optional features varied by trim level but could include keyless entry, push-button start, power-adjustable seats, and a navigation system. The Limited trim offered the most comprehensive set of features, including premium leather upholstery and a sunroof.

Crash-test ratings for the 2012 Toyota Sienna were generally positive. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in most crash tests, earning it a Top Safety Pick designation. These ratings provide reassurance regarding the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in the event of a collision.

2012 Toyota Sienna Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Toyota Sienna ranged from approximately $25,000 for the base L model to around $40,000 for the top-of-the-line Limited trim. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, but Toyota's reputation for reliability helps maintain resale value. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident-free status, trim level (Limited and SE models tend to hold their value better), and demand for minivans in the used market. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command the highest prices.

2012 Toyota Sienna Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2012 Toyota Sienna are generally moderate, reflecting its safety ratings and target demographic. Fuel costs are reasonable for a V6 minivan, especially with FWD models. Maintenance is typically affordable, thanks to Toyota's reliability and readily available parts. While repairs can occur, they are usually less frequent and less expensive compared to some competitors. Long-term ownership costs are generally economical, making the Sienna a budget-friendly choice for families seeking reliable transportation. Overall, it's relatively economical to own.

2012 Toyota Sienna Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Toyota Sienna is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Toyota Sienna Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2012 Toyota Sienna competes with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Town & Country (Dodge Grand Caravan), and Nissan Quest. In terms of performance, the Sienna's V6 engine is comparable to the Odyssey and offers more power than the base engines in the Chrysler models. The Sienna's available all-wheel drive is a unique selling point not offered by all competitors.

Feature-wise, the Odyssey offered a slightly more refined interior and innovative features like the "cool box." The Chrysler Town & Country often provided more luxurious features at a lower price point, but its reliability was generally lower. The Nissan Quest lagged behind in terms of overall driving experience and cargo space.

Reliability is where the Sienna shines, often outperforming Chrysler products and matching or exceeding the Odyssey. However, the Odyssey's driving dynamics are often praised as being more engaging. Price-wise, the Sienna typically falls in the middle of the pack.

Alternatives? The Honda Odyssey is a strong contender offering a similar balance of practicality and reliability. If budget is a primary concern and you're willing to accept potentially higher repair costs, a Chrysler Town & Country might be considered. However, for a blend of reliability, practicality, and available AWD, the Sienna is a solid choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Toyota Sienna a Good Minivan?

The 2012 Toyota Sienna is an excellent choice for families needing a reliable and spacious minivan. Its V6 engine offers adequate power, and its reputation for dependability is a major draw. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you prioritize reliability and functionality over luxury or cutting-edge technology. Ideal conditions would be a well-maintained example with a thorough service history, preferably an XLE or Limited trim for added features. The SE trim is a good option for those seeking a slightly sportier look and feel. Avoid neglected examples with high mileage and missing service records. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic.

We have already owned 2 Toyota Siennas.

We have liked the Toyota Sienna so much, this is the 2nd one we purchased and each one we owned and never experienced any out of the ordinary problems. Great family vehicle.

Reliable, versatile, and comfortable!

Best performing minivan on the market. Very roomy and quiet. Seems sportier than both Honda and Kia. Only wish it had full stow n go like the Chryslers.

I had used Acura legend after that’s it.

Family car safe and very easy to fix and reliable for long trip only problem I have the front bumper is very low to get into my drive away.

So far great comfy ride

Just purchased my 2012 used and so far all I want to do is drive and drive some more! It does feel a bit boxy driving as I think it's a little bigger than the Town & Country, that drove more like a car. The most important thing was finding a mini van with AWD. I do find it a little difficult seeing over the hood and when I put the seat up I almost feel like I'm hitting my head. I tend to deliver a lot of larger items so having extra space in the back is a priority and this fills it so nicely. So far I love it!

Never had any mechanical breakdowns.

Toyota is one of the best of the best car ever.

Well done

This is a 2012 Sienna with 49K miles. While I'm not happy with the gas mileage the car has been great. In fact, one minor repair I have only had to do normal maintenance, bracks, oil changes, and tires.
