2017 Toyota Sienna Review: Reliable Upscale Minivan With Great Safety Technology

Rating: 4.73
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The Toyota Sienna, a minivan renowned for its reliability and family-friendliness, has been a staple on American roads for decades. The 2017 Sienna, part of its third generation, continues this tradition. It's available exclusively as a minivan, offering spacious seating and cargo capacity. Key trims include L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. Pricing in 2017 ranged from around $30,000 to $47,000 new. The Sienna stands out because of its available all-wheel drive, a unique feature in the minivan segment, and its reputation for long-term dependability, making it a popular choice for families seeking practicality and peace of mind.
The Good

The 2017 Toyota Sienna excels in reliability, offering peace of mind to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior appeal to families seeking a pleasant driving experience. While not the most stylish, its functional design maximizes utility. The Sienna also provides good value, balancing price with features and long-term ownership costs. Performance is adequate for daily driving, and fuel efficiency is respectable for its class. Emotionally, the Sienna offers security and convenience for family transportation.

The Bad

While generally reliable, the 2017 Toyota Sienna's weaknesses include a somewhat dated interior design compared to newer competitors. The handling can feel a bit cumbersome, and the ride can be firm on certain road surfaces. Some owners have reported issues with the power sliding doors. It's important to check for any signs of excessive wear and tear, especially on high-mileage examples. Look for any transmission issues during the test drive.

What Problems Does the 2017 Toyota Sienna Have?

The 2017 Toyota Sienna generally enjoys a reputation for reliability, but some common issues have been reported. One frequent concern involves the power sliding doors, with some owners experiencing malfunctions or failures. This can range from doors not opening or closing properly to complete door lock failures.

Another area of concern involves the automatic transmission. Some owners have reported experiencing rough shifting or delayed engagement, particularly at higher mileages. Addressing this promptly is crucial to prevent more significant transmission damage.

While not widespread, some owners have mentioned issues with the electronic stability control system or the anti-lock braking system. These issues can manifest as warning lights or erratic behavior during braking or cornering. Inspecting the ABS and ESC systems is recommended, especially in older models.

There have been recalls related to certain components, such as the fuel system and airbags. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to determine if any recalls apply and ensure all necessary repairs have been completed.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around routine maintenance items like brakes, tires, and fluid changes. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule is crucial for maximizing the Sienna's lifespan and preventing major issues. Some owners have also noted minor electrical issues or sensor failures as the vehicle ages. Regularly scheduled maintenance will reduce long-term issues.

How long will the 2017 Toyota Sienna last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Toyota Sienna can easily achieve 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Many owners report reaching 300,000 miles with consistent care. Long-term durability is a Sienna strong point. However, weaknesses may emerge over time, including wear and tear on suspension components, bushings, and the aforementioned power sliding doors. Rust can become a concern in colder climates where salt is used on roads. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) are crucial for maximizing engine and transmission life. Addressing minor issues promptly prevents them from escalating into more costly repairs.

I have owned it for almost 4 years the car met my expectations. The only issue the battery didn’t last as long as expected otherwise excellent vehicle.
Alejandra Chiapa
This car meets all my needs. It has plenty of leg room and feels very comfortable. You feel the smooth ride. I love it for the cargo space too. Roomy and super nice.
Blake
This car it’s in great condition. You will always enjoying driving. You have a lot of space on it. One of the best cars I never had. Just amazing.
Negative Owner Reviews
Wheeler
I understand the previous owner?s desire to get rid of it at such low mileage (5000). Around town, accelerating on an incline, causes jerky performance. And, upshifts/downshifts, at highway speeds, on hilly terrain, are quite harsh. Dealers are at a loss, ?nature of the beast? reaction. Noisy, inside and out. Turning west at sunset, means no instrument lighting...., in the ?auto? switch position. Sorry officer.... Styling, seat comfort, and safety are still great.
Ed
I test drive this car to compare it with Honda Odessey before buying a family car. One thing that I don't like most, the interior is just like a regular truck. It is not like a family car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Toyota Sienna offers a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen Entune Audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Higher trims offer a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a Blu-ray player.

Driver-assistance features were not as advanced as in later models, but available options included blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control (on higher trims). Standard safety features comprise anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags.

Optional features included a dual-view Blu-ray entertainment system for rear passengers, allowing two different media sources to be displayed simultaneously. The Driver Easy Speak system, which amplifies the driver's voice through the rear speakers, was also available. The Limited trim offered premium features such as a JBL sound system and heated front seats.

The 2017 Toyota Sienna received strong crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating, and the NHTSA gave it a 5-star overall safety rating, reflecting its robust safety performance in various crash scenarios. These ratings provide peace of mind for families prioritizing safety.

2017 Toyota Sienna Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Toyota Sienna ranged from approximately $30,000 for the base L trim to around $47,000 for the fully loaded Limited trim. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find examples ranging from $18,000 to $30,000. The Sienna holds its value relatively well due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, trim level (Limited trims command a premium), and the availability of all-wheel drive. Siennas in excellent condition with low mileage and a clean history command higher prices.

2017 Toyota Sienna Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Toyota Sienna is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, and fuel consumption is reasonable for a minivan. Maintenance costs are predictable and relatively low, especially if adhering to the recommended service schedule. Toyota parts are widely available and generally affordable. While occasional repairs are inevitable, the Sienna's inherent reliability helps minimize unexpected expenses. Long-term ownership costs are therefore manageable, making it a budget-friendly choice for families.

Notes

2017 Toyota Sienna Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Toyota Sienna is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Toyota Sienna Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Van?

The 2017 Toyota Sienna competes with the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, and Kia Sedona. Compared to the Honda Odyssey, the Sienna offers available all-wheel drive, a unique selling point. The Odyssey, however, often has a more refined driving experience and slightly better fuel economy. The Chrysler Pacifica boasts a more stylish interior and available hybrid powertrain, but its long-term reliability hasn't matched the Sienna's. The Kia Sedona represents a value-oriented option, offering a lower price point but sacrificing some refinement and resale value.

In terms of reliability, the Sienna generally outperforms the Pacifica. In terms of performance, the Odyssey might edge out the Sienna slightly. For features, the Pacifica offers newer technology, while the Sienna's tech is more dated. The Sienna's price is competitive within the segment.

A similar alternative would be the Honda Odyssey, particularly if all-wheel drive is not a necessity. If budget is a major concern, the Kia Sedona could be a viable option, but be prepared for potentially higher long-term repair costs. Overall, the Sienna remains a strong contender due to its proven reliability and available AWD.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Toyota Sienna a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Van?

The 2017 Toyota Sienna is an ideal choice for families prioritizing reliability, practicality, and available all-wheel drive. It's a solid used-car purchase, especially if well-maintained and with a clean history. It's worth buying if you value long-term dependability over cutting-edge technology. Look for LE, XLE, or Limited trims for added features. Avoid models with a history of neglect or significant damage. The Sienna's proven track record makes it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a dependable and spacious family vehicle. Ensure a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic to avoid potential surprises.

Great Van but poor Transmission shifting, get comp

I owned a 2014 sienna limited premium and was the best vehicle I have ever owned in my 50 years of driving, owning 16 different cars, Suvs and Vans. I purchased a 2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium AWD and I like it but I don't like the way it shifts, its very jerky. I did get a computer engine software update that helped very much. The engine having 40 more horse power would make me think that it would have tremendous power compaired to my 2014, but it did not. So it purchased a what call (chip your car) that connects under the dash to get more refindment in the performace, to unleash the filtered performance and it did. What a difference in performance. I purchaced the chip for 150.00 and its worth every penny. I am a performance guy especially when driving a nice van. So with the Toyota Software upgrade and my computer chip upgrade now we have a nice performace running van which my 2014 had also.

Love it as much as my old Honda Odyssey.

I love the sleek look of the exterior compared to the choppy look of the Honda Odyssey from that year. We have owned toyota camrys in the past and love their reliability. This minivan has so many wonderful features and drives beautifully. I will have it for many years.

You can't beat the Sienna

The Sienna rides like a car, but gives you much more room. Reliability and comfort are second to none. Just change the oil and they run forever. This is our third Sienna.

We have not had any issues with this van. Love it!

We have not had any issues with this van. The captain’s chairs in the middle recline and are quite comfortable. The AWD is awesome in snowy weather. The driver visibility is great due to sitting a little higher. I feel this is a very safe vehicle. The DVD player is a real plus for longer trips with young passengers.
