2009 Toyota Sienna Review: Extremely Reliable & Well Made Minivan

Rating: 4.55
Based on 44 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Toyota Sienna is a minivan, part of the second generation (2004-2010). Key trims included the CE, LE, XLE, and Limited. Known for its reliability and spaciousness, the Sienna was a popular choice for families. New, it ranged approximately from $25,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options. It stood out for its available all-wheel drive, a rarity in the minivan segment.
The Good

The 2009 Sienna offers a smooth and reliable ride. Its spacious interior and comfortable seating appeal to families. Toyota's reputation for reliability gives peace of mind, while the available AWD provides added security. It’s a practical and dependable choice that inspires confidence for family adventures.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with power door malfunctions and oil leaks. Suspension components can wear over time, leading to costly repairs. The Sienna's styling might be considered bland by some, and the fuel economy isn't class-leading. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates.

What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota Sienna Have?

The 2009 Toyota Sienna, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Power sliding door issues are common, including failures to open or close properly. These can be costly to repair. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket, are another concern. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or slipping, particularly at higher mileage.

There have been recalls related to potential issues with the accelerator pedal and floor mat entrapment, consistent with recalls affecting many Toyota models during that era. It's crucial to verify that these recall repairs have been performed. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, can be a long-term reliability concern, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, are prone to wear and tear over time, potentially requiring replacement. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly compressor failures. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can mitigate some of these long-term reliability concerns. Before purchasing a used 2009 Sienna, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2009 Toyota Sienna last?

With good maintenance, a 2009 Toyota Sienna can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with proper care. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are crucial.

Long-term durability weaknesses often involve suspension components, power door mechanisms, and potential rust issues (especially in colder climates). Properly maintaining these areas can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can lead to premature failure of these systems.

I'll choose this van over any other new van or cars out there, it is very reliable and fun very spaceship with no problem highly recommeced

We have owned this Sienna since 2008 when the 2009 was available. Currently we have 250,000 miles on it and we have had no costs except oil and tires until 2022! We live in Ohio and the body of this car looks new, except the front light covers. We hope to keep this car until 300,000 miles if not longer.
Browns Fan
The van exceeded our expectations. We bought the van used with about 30K mileage. It is now at 116K and we have never had to have the van serviced except for normal wear and tear items such as brakes and tires. Easy access for kids, smooth ride, and long term use are huge positives for this van. It handles just fine in the snow.
Negative Owner Reviews
Vortax
I2 you have 3 kids or more and want a practical car, this is it. Buy it with the sliding electric doors and you are set. The seats on the SE are not comfy, rather a bad ride for long trips. Super reliable, never done more than basic maintenance; and it is such an ugly and uninspiring vehicle that you just don't give a dime when the kids trash it. Perfect family vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Toyota Sienna offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, and a full complement of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Entertainment features varied by trim. The base CE trim had a basic audio system, while higher trims like the LE and XLE offered upgraded audio systems, including CD players and auxiliary input jacks. The Limited trim featured a premium JBL audio system and an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a screen and wireless headphones.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Higher trims offered features like parking sensors and a rearview camera (optional). Navigation was available on the Limited trim. No advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking were available.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally good. The Sienna received good ratings in most IIHS crash tests. NHTSA ratings varied, but overall, the Sienna provided adequate crash protection for its occupants. Keep in mind that safety technology has significantly advanced since 2009.

2009 Toyota Sienna Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Toyota Sienna ranged from approximately $25,000 for the base CE model to around $40,000 for a fully loaded Limited. Current used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $5,000 to $12,000 or possibly higher for exceptionally well-maintained examples with low mileage.

The Sienna depreciated significantly over the years, but its strong reputation for reliability helps it retain some value. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, maintenance records, and the presence of desirable options like AWD or the rear-seat entertainment system. Higher trims (XLE, Limited) generally command higher prices than base models.

2009 Toyota Sienna Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 Toyota Sienna are typically moderate, reflecting its family-friendly nature and safety record. Fuel costs are average for a minivan of its age, but not exceptionally economical. Maintenance costs can be reasonable if regular servicing is performed. However, repairs can be expensive, especially for power door issues or transmission problems. Long-term ownership costs are generally moderate, but depend heavily on the vehicle's condition and maintenance history. Properly maintained, it's a reasonably economical vehicle to own; neglecting it can lead to higher costs.

2009 Toyota Sienna Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Toyota Sienna is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Toyota Sienna Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Van?

The 2009 Toyota Sienna competed with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, and Nissan Quest. In terms of reliability, the Sienna and Odyssey were generally considered the top contenders. The Grand Caravan and Town & Country offered more affordable options with innovative seating configurations but lagged behind in reliability. The Nissan Quest was less popular and generally less refined.

Performance-wise, the Sienna's V6 engine provided adequate power. The Odyssey offered similar performance. Feature-wise, the Sienna offered a comparable range of options, though the Chrysler minivans had features like Stow 'n Go seating that were unique. Pricing for the Sienna was generally competitive.

Alternatives to the 2009 Sienna would include a well-maintained Honda Odyssey of the same year, offering similar reliability and a slightly more engaging driving experience. If budget is a primary concern, a Dodge Grand Caravan or Chrysler Town & Country could be considered, but be aware of potential reliability compromises. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities. For those prioritizing reliability and available AWD, the Sienna remains a strong contender.

Ranks #130 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota Sienna a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Van?

The 2009 Toyota Sienna is ideal for families seeking a reliable and spacious minivan. It's a good choice for those prioritizing dependability and available all-wheel drive. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition of the used vehicle. A well-maintained Sienna with comprehensive service records is a worthwhile purchase.

Specific trims like the XLE or Limited offer more features and comforts, but the LE provides a good balance of features and affordability. Avoid examples with excessive rust or obvious signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Consider the Sienna a viable option if reliability and passenger space are top priorities.

Excellent Family Vehicle with Style & Versitility

Far more cargo room that any midsize SUV. Easier to haul (indide) 8-10 ft lumber than in my pick-up truck. Even fit a 10 ft kayak inside. Nice smooth ride because its on a car (not truck) frame and suspension. Drove it 185000 miles with no major issues.

Great car but get the AWD version

Purchased our 2009 Sienna FWD XLE new and drove it 168000 miles in 9 years. Great family car that has been much improved since 2009 by modern safety and electronic features. Get the AWD if you want to avoid front tire spinning on wet pavement. The Sienna is still the only minivan that offers AWD and I say get it! Replaced rear springs and shocks, front struts and spark plugs at 100K or so. Had a variable valve timing actuator problem at about 55K that was a major repair covered by warranty. A little hard on tires but a great car.

Very reliable and comfortable

Love it! Would recommend it to all size families. It is 7 passenger with back row seats that fold down to make plenty of room for baggage. It also has automatic opening trunk door and back doors. Plenty of cubby spots and drink holders What space! Great vehicle!

100% reliable for 200,000+ miles of AWD hauling!

AWD, reliable, and the utility of a well-designed mini-van. A great family hauler. Aside from tires, brakes, oil, and pads, this car has cost almost nothing to keep running for over 200,000 miles. The only gripe is the gas mileage is poor. A heavy, AWD, chunk will have those issues, though! If given a chance to go back in time, I would absolutely purchase this vehicle again!
