2011 Subaru Forester Review: A Compact SUV Focused on Comfort and Reliability

Rating: 4.28
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Subaru Forester is a compact SUV known for its standard all-wheel drive and practicality. Part of the third generation (2009-2013), it comes in trims like the base, Premium, X, and XT (turbocharged). It's popular for its spacious interior, good visibility, and off-road capability. New pricing ranged from around $21,000 to $30,000. It stands out due to its symmetrical AWD system and reputation for reliability.
The Good

The 2011 Forester offers reliable all-weather performance thanks to its standard AWD, appealing to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior provide a pleasant experience. While not the most stylish, its functional design is a plus. Its reliability track record and decent fuel efficiency enhance its value, providing peace of mind and saving money.

The Bad

The 2011 Forester's weaknesses include somewhat underwhelming base engine performance. Oil consumption can be an issue on some models. The interior plastics can feel cheap. Potential buyers should watch out for head gasket issues, especially on non-turbo models, and inspect the suspension for wear.

What Problems Does the 2011 Subaru Forester Have?

The 2011 Subaru Forester, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Oil consumption is a common concern, particularly with the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine. Owners often report needing to add oil between changes. Head gasket failures, a known Subaru issue, can also occur, though less frequently than in older models.

Suspension components, especially the rear struts and bushings, may wear out prematurely, leading to ride quality issues and needing replacement. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures. Interior components, such as the seat upholstery and dashboard trim, might show wear and tear over time.

Recalls for the 2011 Forester varied but often involved issues like potential brake line corrosion in regions with heavy road salt use and potential problems with the fuel pump relay. Checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for specific recalls affecting your VIN is crucial.

Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Regularly checking and maintaining fluid levels (especially oil), adhering to the recommended service schedule, and addressing minor issues promptly can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

How long will the 2011 Subaru Forester last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 Subaru Forester can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide over 15 years of service. However, longevity depends greatly on how well the vehicle was maintained. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is generally good, but potential weaknesses include increased oil consumption, suspension wear (requiring replacement of struts and bushings), and potential for exhaust system corrosion, especially in areas with road salt. Addressing these issues as they arise is crucial for maximizing its lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
Eric
I've owned a 2011 Subaru Forester for years and it has been supremely dependable through northern Michigan weather. Super cold to humid and muggy, it's been a comfortable, reliable ride throughout.
Jad Essahli
I like it and i want to drive it by myself and do stunts with it and use it as fun and good and commuting
Ron S.
Best longest lasting car I ever owned. (Premium package) Unfortunately,it had the motor issue where it burned oil and I had to complain for years to the dealership until they finally verified what I complained about since 34,000 miles. At 100,000 miles they changed out the motor parts and corrected the problem. I’ve owned several other American made(made in Canada) vehicles who never stood behind their vehicles so got fed up and purchased a Subaru. This story still goes to show that there can still be mechanical issues but a great dealership can really make a difference. I purchased it in the Wilkes-Barre area but a Northumberland dealership finally fixed the recall issue. Our family now has owned 3 Subaru’s and love them!
Negative Owner Reviews
Sam
Used as sturdy work vehicle, nice for tight turns, good fuel efficiency for SUV, ideal as high schooler's first car or for running errands, has served me well
Nitroshocked
At first loved this vehicle but quickly outgrew it, lack of fuel economy compared to newer vehicles also helped the time to change. Love the concept of subaru's all wheel drive system but the boxer engine is in great need of updating! Timing belt needs replacement at 105k miles but still can grenade at any time, not worth the risk or money to me
NEVER AGAIN
google "subaru forester oil consumption" then start saving for a short block. This car is prone to issues. My advice is to buy a toyota if you want something that won't drain your wallet in repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Subaru Forester offered a decent set of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims added features like a premium audio system with satellite radio capability. Navigation was available as an optional feature on some trims.

In terms of safety, all 2011 Foresters came standard with antilock brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, and front side and side curtain airbags. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles; there were no standard features like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

Optional features included a sunroof, heated front seats, and upgraded audio systems. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2011 Subaru Forester a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it four out of five stars for overall safety. These ratings indicate a reasonably safe vehicle for its class and era. While lacking the advanced driver-assistance systems of newer cars, its standard safety features provided a solid foundation for occupant protection.

2011 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Subaru Forester's prices ranged from approximately $21,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $12,000, but it can vary based on condition, mileage, and location. The Forester has held its value relatively well due to Subaru's reputation for reliability and the popularity of AWD vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, accident history, and service records. Models with complete service histories and low mileage command higher prices.

2011 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Subaru Forester is moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are generally average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the naturally aspirated engine. Maintenance costs can be higher than some competitors due to the AWD system and potential for specific Subaru issues like head gasket repairs. Repair costs can also be slightly above average. Long-term, addressing potential oil consumption and suspension wear is key to keeping ownership costs manageable. Overall, it's neither the cheapest nor the most expensive to own.

2011 Subaru Forester Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Subaru Forester is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 Subaru Forester competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Forester's base engine is less powerful than some rivals, but the turbocharged XT offers a significant boost. Feature-wise, it's comparable, though some competitors might offer more advanced tech. Reliability is a Subaru strong suit, though the CR-V and RAV4 have excellent reputations as well. Price-wise, the Forester is usually competitive.

The Honda CR-V offers a smoother ride and more refined interior, making it a good alternative if comfort is a priority. The Toyota RAV4 is known for its exceptional reliability and longevity. The Mazda CX-5 (if considering a newer model year) provides a sportier driving experience. All offer similar practicality but differ in their strengths. For all-weather capability and standard AWD, the Forester remains a compelling choice. However, if AWD isn't a necessity, the CR-V and RAV4 might be better overall choices due to their slightly superior fuel economy and lower potential maintenance costs. A newer CX-5 provides a more modern driving feel and updated technology.

Ranks #414 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Subaru Forester a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 Subaru Forester is ideal for those needing a practical, reliable, and capable compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's worth buying used, especially for buyers who prioritize all-weather performance and a spacious interior on a budget. Look for well-maintained models with detailed service records. The Premium or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and value. Be mindful of potential oil consumption and suspension wear during inspection. If you need more power, the XT (turbo) trim is worth considering, but be prepared for slightly lower fuel economy and potentially higher maintenance costs.

Dependable and built to last.

I've owned a 2011 Subaru Forester for years and it has been supremely dependable through northern Michigan weather. Super cold to humid and muggy, it's been a comfortable, reliable ride throughout.

Great Small SUV!

This is my 4th Subaru! I love it. Never any problems. But it only has 24,000 ACTUAL miles on it! Well, its a good car! I'm eyeing a Subaru Ascent. It can pull a small camper and carry 7 passengers!

Best car and dealership

The auto handles like a sports car and has all wheel drive for solid road stability feel. The interior is well appointed with very comfortable seats.

Big Fan of Subaru Forester

A major point for me is ease of entering /exiting vehicle (tall). Also safety record, dependability, comfort and my familiarity with this model. My 1st Forester was purchased new in 2010, and had been recommended to me by my brother (a Master Gold Tech for LandRover).

Simple and trustworthy

I have the base model forester, no frills just does what it’s meant to! The exterior is sporty but not over the top, interior is spacious and very open feeling. Super comfortable ride with not too much road noise and feels snug on turns. When the back seats are down the cargo space is pretty unbeatable! Also does amazing off road (snow, gravel, mud, whatever)!

Car loves to drink oil

I'd stay away from any Subaru. When they fail to design it right and are sued and forced into a class action lawsuit, they don't follow through. Reminds me of Honda.
