Rating: 4.00
Based on 66 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan is a minivan, a body style synonymous with family practicality. Part of the vehicle's fifth generation (2008-2020), it was available in trims like SE, SXT, and Limited. Its popularity stemmed from its affordability, spaciousness, and Stow 'n Go seating, allowing seats to fold flat into the floor. The original MSRP ranged approximately from $20,000 to $30,000. It stood out for its value proposition.
The Good

The 2008 Grand Caravan offers practical advantages like ample cargo space and Stow 'n Go seating, appealing to families. It provides comfortable ride quality, especially on longer trips. While not a performance vehicle, its V6 engine offers adequate power. Its main appeal lies in its value, offering a lot of space and features for the price. For emotional buyers, it represents family road trips and memories.

The Bad

The 2008 Grand Caravan has known weaknesses. Common issues include electrical problems (power door issues), transmission concerns (rough shifting), and premature brake wear. Some owners reported issues with the climate control system. Rust can be a problem in colder climates, particularly on the undercarriage and around the wheel wells. Always check for these issues before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan include issues with the power sliding doors, which can fail to open or close properly. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or complete failure, are also relatively common. Electrical issues, including problems with the radio, climate control, and power windows, have been reported. Premature brake wear is another frequent complaint.

Recalls for the 2008 model year have addressed issues such as potential problems with the speed control system and brake light switch. Long-term reliability concerns often center around the transmission and electrical systems. Rust can become a significant issue, particularly in areas with road salt. Some owners have reported problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause a variety of electrical malfunctions. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate some of these concerns, but potential buyers should be aware of these common problems before purchasing a used 2008 Grand Caravan.

How long will the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan last?

Given its age, a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan could have accumulated anywhere from 150,000 to 250,000 miles, or even more, depending on usage and maintenance. With diligent maintenance, some owners have reported reaching well over 200,000 miles. However, long-term durability is a concern. Weaknesses often appear in the transmission, electrical systems, and suspension components over time. Rust can significantly impact longevity, especially in regions with harsh winters. Regular fluid changes, timely repairs, and rust prevention measures are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will drastically shorten its usable life.

This car met all the needs. Great for big family it drives good in any whether. Economic very a lot space in the trunk you gonna like it.
ODAWG45$
The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan is truly a jack of all trades. It's comfortable, has seating for 7, all the rear seats can be stowed away to allow for a huge cargo area. It does it all and then some, the Grand Caravan is great for anyone who has kids, needs to move stuff around, or just likes having space for any occasion.
Discobus
The grand caravan has plenty of room for our family of five. The stow & go seating is great for when hauling sports equipment or vacation luggage is needed. The reliability of this vehicle is top notch. We've never been let down when it comes to supporting all of our traveling needs.
Negative Owner Reviews

It is callled the workhorse for a reason! They usually drive until they're dead with high miles. No frills but it gets the job done.

We purchased in July 2008 and have had numerous problems with this car including high pressure hose for A\C leaking which required replacement, front wheel bearing replacement, premature front brake replacement, electrical system went dead while driving on several occasions and came back on by its self, transmission replacement at 25,649 miles and now at 60,002 miles it needs to be replaced again! I have owned Dodge Mini-Vans since 1986 and was very happy with them. The 2008 model is the worst car I have ever owned. Besides the promblems listed above it has numerous rattles and sqeaks including the sliding doors.
Peaches
This is my 6th dodge caravan. I am shocked at what we've been through with this van. My reveiw is going to sound very similar to one of the others written before me. We had a new transmission at 33,000 miles- new brakes twice on the front & once on the rear, both of which were very expensive and no generic market was available it was a dealer item, & a new set of tires all by 40,000. The tires are very expensive & only 1 company makes an off brand. They are low & thin-no one gives a warranty on the tires! I checked about 15 different places in N. GA & Chattanooga, TN area. The rear brakes are just like the front so you can expect to change them -I don't mean just the pads I mean the drums too!-pretty often. This van was designed to hold the road & drive different & it does-i actually love how it handles, but it's a maintenance night mare! I'm just writing a review today because now my radio has gone out-no lights even for the clock & it's not just a fuse! When I had to have brakes & tires at the same time I called my salesman and told him to find me a used 07. I was ready to go back to a trusted, tried & true model. As bad as I hate to say it, I would not buy an 08. I don't know if 09 or 10 has changed these problems, but I could not feel good about recommending it if they haven't.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a basic audio system, air conditioning, and power windows and locks. Higher trims added features like a DVD entertainment system with a flip-down screen, a premium audio system, and power sliding doors. Navigation systems were available as an option.

In terms of safety, the Grand Caravan came standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). Side-curtain airbags were also standard. Some trims included optional features like rear parking sensors. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied depending on the specific test. It generally scored well in frontal crash tests but had mixed results in side-impact tests. The availability of features like ESC and side airbags played a significant role in overall safety performance. Always check the specific ratings for the 2008 model year from both NHTSA and IIHS for detailed information.

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan had an MSRP ranging from approximately $20,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Grand Caravan has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, higher mileage, and reported reliability issues. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition (rust-free being ideal), maintenance records, and the presence of desirable features like Stow 'n Go seating and the DVD entertainment system. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command a premium.

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan are generally moderate. Fuel costs can be relatively high, especially with the larger engines, due to lower fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be a significant factor, given the vehicle's age and potential for mechanical issues. Parts are generally readily available and relatively inexpensive. Overall, long-term ownership can be costly due to potential repairs. Budgeting for unexpected maintenance is essential. It is not the most economical vehicle to own compared to newer, more efficient options.

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan Compare to Other Van?

The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan competed with minivans like the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Town & Country (which is essentially the same vehicle with different styling and features). In terms of performance, the Sienna and Odyssey generally offered smoother engines and better handling. The Grand Caravan's main advantage was its lower price point.

Feature-wise, the Grand Caravan offered Stow 'n Go seating, which was a unique selling point. However, the Sienna and Odyssey often had more refined interiors and advanced features. Reliability is where the Grand Caravan lagged behind the Toyota and Honda, with more reported issues.

If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey are better alternatives, albeit at a higher price. A similar alternative, sharing many components, would be the Chrysler Town & Country of the same year. The Grand Caravan is a viable option for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize space and features like Stow 'n Go and are willing to accept the potential for more frequent repairs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Van?

The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan is ideal for budget-conscious families needing a spacious and versatile vehicle. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential reliability issues and factor in maintenance costs. It's best to purchase a well-maintained used model with service records. Specific trims like the SXT offer a good balance of features and affordability. Avoid models with obvious signs of neglect or rust. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. If reliability is a primary concern, consider alternatives like the Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey, even if they come at a higher price.

My 08 caravan has 371,000 and still going, it has had a few issues with brakes replaced often, the front control arms and a front axel was replaced around 250,000 miles but overall I love this van so much I don't trust the newer ones, we bought brand new and purchased the lifetime wrap around warranty, so after 16 years I still drive it, although we have two newer dodge vehicles a truck and charger, I prefer my van

Dodge is dodging some issues

Bought from dealer as a certified used cars and has been great up until issues with misfires of cylinders and key fobs. The A/C has been done twice since purchased and still not functioning. It had issues with no cold air and the control knobs when off is activating the vents causing it to drain the battery dead. CV axles have been replaced twice on each side along with complete hardware of hub and breaks and alignment needed which is redundant. The ABS module was unnecessarily replaced by code showing it was defective . The Gas Cap being loose caused the ABS to give the wrong code and very frustrating trying to TDC the issue. Spent a lot of money to up keep a certified car not to mention losing my job over it. But as mentioned the vehicle is great other than the issues that still exist. Dodge knows what's going on with these vehicles and wondering why they consumer has to deal with these issues that still exists costing everybody money.

They send a recall all the time. And if you don't do it when they call the recall they don't recognize you then it's a car defect and they want to charge you as if it were a car of the year. they lose strength over time.

Bad oil line under hood

Oil line rusting very small hole witch began to smoke while driving. Drivers should have the lines look at once a year or if they smell smoke under the hood. Could start a fire

Swiss Army Knife of cars

The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan is truly a jack of all trades. It's comfortable, has seating for 7, all the rear seats can be stowed away to allow for a huge cargo area. It does it all and then some, the Grand Caravan is great for anyone who has kids, needs to move stuff around, or just likes having space for any occasion.

Great features but do not last.

I loved the features from the stow and go to the window sun shades. But everything seems to quit working. I have owned my van for 2 years and within the first year the third row seat wont fold up, the rear door wont work automatically to shut it. It only works to open with the key or button. The sliding doors randomly lock and wont unlock with the button. The sliding doors like to randomly open even after being cleaned. Its like every electrical option has a malfunction.

Overall a great value!

The grand caravan has plenty of room for our family of five. The stow & go seating is great for when hauling sports equipment or vacation luggage is needed. The reliability of this vehicle is top notch. We've never been let down when it comes to supporting all of our traveling needs.

Dodge needs to fix this problem

We had the problem that the ignition recall is describing. Power steering and brakes would randomly stop working while driving! I have 3 kids and one on the way and it was so scary going into the middle of an intersection because I couldn't stop! We did the recall. They switched the ignition and it is STILL doing it. It did it once last week and once this week. Dodge needs to figure this out before a family dies.

My Old Grand Caravan

Had a 2008 Grand Caravan until May 2, 2019. Good vehicle and I definitely got my money's worth out of it, but once it hit about 120,000 miles it started to get unreliable. Started to lose oil, and eventually had more small gasket leaks than I could count. Also had problems with the body starting to rust out, the electronic door locks, the brakes and alignment, and finally lost the starter, the exhaust system, and the radiator at 146,000 miles. It was a good vehicle, and I got it serviced regularly, but it just didn't last as long as I thought it should. 146,000 miles seems a little early for this vehicle to literally self-destruct.
