Rating: 4.40

Jovan | March 31, 2025
The Dodge Grand Caravan, a minivan staple, has been around since 1984. The 2016 model is part of the fifth generation (2008-2020). Key trims include SE, SE Plus, SXT, and R/T. New pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $33,000. It's popular for its Stow 'n Go seating, offering unparalleled cargo flexibility and affordability in the minivan segment.
The Good

The 2016 Grand Caravan offers a powerful V6 engine, providing confident performance. Practical buyers appreciate its Stow 'n Go seating, affordability, and generous cargo space. Emotionally, it provides family functionality and a reputation for value, making family trips easier and more enjoyable. While not the most luxurious, it gets the job done efficiently.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2016 Grand Caravan include its somewhat dated interior design and lower-quality materials compared to rivals. Reliability can be a concern, with potential issues including electrical problems and transmission glitches. Fuel economy isn't the best in class. Be sure to check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan often revolve around electrical issues, including problems with the power sliding doors, radio malfunctions, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or complete failure, are also reported. Premature wear of brake components and issues with the air conditioning system are other common complaints. Some recalls related to airbag deployment and potential fuel leaks have been issued, so checking the vehicle's recall history is crucial. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the aforementioned issues. While the 3.6L Pentastar engine is generally reliable, other components may require more frequent repairs. Earlier model years (2008-2010) within the fifth generation had more widespread reports of TIPM failures, but the 2016 model still warrants careful inspection of electrical systems. Owners should also pay close attention to any unusual noises or vibrations from the transmission, as preventative maintenance can potentially mitigate future issues.

How long will the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, longevity depends heavily on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing issues promptly. Weaknesses over time tend to be related to electrical components, suspension parts, and potential rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Preventative maintenance and rustproofing can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can lead to a shorter lifespan and more costly repairs.

I bought my 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan used in 2017. I've got 130,000 miles on it now and I'm still overall very pleased. This is my 4th Dodge/Chrysler minivan in the last 20+ years. I am kind of tired of driving a minivan but don't know if I could give them up! This van has so many pros and very few cons. First, price is lower than other makes of minivans. Front and middle rows very comfortable on long trips. Good visibility from front and middle rows. I love that it has 2 separate glove boxes. Tons of cup holders! Adequate cargo area behind 3rd row seats. The stow and go feature is awesome. With second and third row seats folded down and hidden underneath the floor, you've got a huge open space to haul stuff. Almost like having a pickup truck except no one asks you to borrow it to move! Lol. It's easy to get in and out of even if you have mobility problems. Drives and handles well. I don't think we've ever had it in the shop. Never broken down on us. I've had this van since 2017 and no problems EVER until this summer. The radio quit working. We replaced it, and after a few weeks, the second one quit. Going to have it looked at soon. Also, the wipers have always worked poorly. Even after replacing them a few times with premium wipers, they still seem to Ò€œdragÒ€, and are kind of Ò€œbumpyÒ€ is the only way I can describe it. My husband has to warn me before he turns them on, because they are so loud at first that they startle me very badly. Very irritating. When there's a heavy rain they work fairly quietly and smoothly.
Kaykay
My kids are so excited for all the space and how shiny and like new the car is. There are only 56000 mi. on the van and so we are happy that it will be a part of the family for many years to come!
msansotta7
I love the style of the outside including the running boards that Dodge installed. The stow and go seating folds into the floor to make it literally a cargo van in addition to being a 7-passenger van. The vehicle is a great value for the money. The cool blue lighting on the ceiling, the instrument cluster and console is outstanding in style and use. The seats are very comfortable even for long trips.

This car is roomy enough for my family but I'm concerned about the safety of the sliding door. One door is stuck shut I cant open it with the button or fob and you cant manually open. I googled this and see a lot of people have this problem. I've only had my car a year so why is this happening
Ike
My mother taught me that if I don't have anything nice to say, to not say anything at all. Sorry mom. This car is a piece of junk. We bought a 2016 used Dodge Grand Caravan last year and promptly had to get the transmission fixed at just under 36k miles. Fortunately it was still under warranty, but not anymore. Now it has 47k miles on it, but we're still having issues - some small and some large. The front passenger leather seat ripped, the rear bumper is started to peel away by about an inch near the rear wheel, and the dvd player compartment broke so it's constantly hanging down. Those are the small things. In addition to fixing the transmission last year, we just took a trip and the car is overheating every time we turn the AC on. This has all happened with less than 50k miles. Can't wait to see what the next 50k brings.
MileSmiles
The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is an overall decent family vehicle that is very accommodating for children or smaller adults. However, the same can not be said by those with a body mass index of greater than 20. The ECON function allows for greater fuel efficiency but is limited to light-to-normal driving conditions only. Higher stress driving conditions such as those experienced when climbing a 3% grade will shut-off the ECON mode. I have read great reviews about this caravan and for the most part I can agree with them as well, but for taller and larger framed individuals describing this vehicle as comfortable is unlikely. I am 6'3" with maybe a pound or two to spare and spent many hours and miles behind the wheel and can say that at the bare minimum leg room for the driver must be reevaluated by the engineers, if nothing else.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan features a standard audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with available navigation and a DVD entertainment system for rear passengers. Tech features are basic compared to newer minivans. Driver-assistance features are limited; a rearview camera is available, but advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning are not offered.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Optional features included a rearview camera and rear parking sensors.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show four-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, with some good ratings but marginal ratings in certain crash tests. It's essential to review specific crash-test data for the 2016 model year to assess its safety performance comprehensively. Consider the absence of advanced safety technology when evaluating this vehicle.

2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan had a starting MSRP of around $23,000 and could reach up to $33,000 for higher trims. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Grand Caravan depreciates significantly due to its age and reputation for reliability issues. High mileage and a lack of maintenance records negatively impact resale value. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage fetch higher prices. The availability of newer, more feature-rich minivans also contributes to its depreciation.

2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is generally considered moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for a minivan. Fuel economy is not exceptional, leading to higher fuel costs compared to more modern rivals. While basic maintenance is affordable, potential repairs, especially related to electrical and transmission issues, can increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, it's not the cheapest minivan to own, but it's also not the most expensive, placing it in a middle ground.

2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Compare to Other Minivan Van?

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan competes with minivans like the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Kia Sedona. In terms of performance, it offers a strong V6 engine, comparable to its rivals. However, its fuel economy lags behind. Feature-wise, it's less equipped than the Sienna and Odyssey, lacking advanced safety technologies. Reliability is a major concern; the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey generally have superior reliability records. Price is where the Grand Caravan shines; it's significantly more affordable than its competitors, both new and used.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota Sienna: Known for its reliability and available all-wheel drive.
  • Honda Odyssey: Offers a spacious interior, refined driving experience, and strong safety ratings.
  • Kia Sedona: Provides a good balance of features, value, and warranty coverage.
If budget is a primary concern, the Grand Caravan is a viable option, but be prepared for potential repairs. For better reliability and more features, the Sienna, Odyssey, or Sedona are superior choices, albeit at a higher price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Minivan Van?

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize affordability and cargo space over advanced features and top-tier reliability. It's worth buying *used* if you can find a well-maintained example with low mileage and a clean maintenance history. The SE or SE Plus trims offer the best value for money, providing essential features without breaking the bank. Be prepared for potential repairs and factor those costs into your budget. If reliability and advanced safety features are paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey, even if they cost more.

Amazingly reliable

I bought my 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan used in 2017. I've got 130,000 miles on it now and I'm still overall very pleased. This is my 4th Dodge/Chrysler minivan in the last 20+ years. Reimbursement denied despite recall letter

Good looking van, however, the rear electronic locks on both rear side doors failed within 4 months of each other and the Chrysler consumer center denied to pay the repair costs despite their recall letter saying they would consider reimbursement. Technicians taking the call were accusatory and discourteous. Repairs were $2200

Excellent value.

This is the third Grand Caravan we have owned. Safe and dependable reliable transportation. Primarily driven by my wife she likes the visibility and the ease of axcess to the driver area (she has issues with her knees). She prefers the more upright seating position as opposed to a sedan. She won't drive anything else.

Just bought this 2016 Caravan...problems already

Brakes are leaking, and at least one window actuator is going out. The vehicle only has 69k miles, so I'm pretty surprised its falling apart so quickly.

Worst car I've ever owned.

I bought this Van brand new with 11 miles on it. At 26000 miles it needed a brand new transmission. It was under warranty. Now 60000 miles later I need a brand new transmission again. This time it's going to cost me $3200.. I am requesting, begging, pleading with Dodge to pay for the primer pump that has been recalled in a 2015 and 16 vans. I've been told mine doesn't qualify. Who has some ideas for my recourse?
