Rating: 4.14
Based on 86 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan is a minivan, a body style Dodge has championed for decades. This fifth-generation model, offered from 2008-2020, boasts features geared toward families. Key trims include the base AVP, SE, SXT, and Crew. New, it ranged from roughly $20,000 to $30,000+. Its Stow 'n Go seating, allowing the second and third rows to fold completely into the floor, is a major selling point, providing unparalleled cargo flexibility and convenience.
The Good

The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan offers practical advantages like Stow 'n Go seating and ample cargo space. Its powerful V6 engine provides confident performance. It's also relatively affordable, making it a value-driven choice for families. For the emotional buyer, the Grand Caravan offers the freedom for family adventures and the convenience of a well-equipped family vehicle.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan include its interior materials, which aren't as refined as some competitors. Reliability can be a concern, with potential issues in the electrical system and transmission. Watch for signs of excessive wear and tear, particularly in the Stow 'n Go seating mechanisms. Ensure regular maintenance has been performed.

What Problems Does the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan Have?

The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan has some frequently reported problems. One common issue involves the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), which can cause a variety of electrical problems, including stalling, failure to start, and issues with lights and accessories. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or complete failure, are also reported. Premature brake wear is another common complaint.
Recalls for the 2012 model year have addressed issues such as the accelerator pedal getting stuck, potentially leading to unintended acceleration. Other recalls have focused on airbag deployment problems and issues with the power sliding doors.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, as the Grand Caravan tends to depreciate more quickly than some competitors. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate potential issues. Inspecting the vehicle's history for past recalls and repairs is highly recommended. Some owners report issues with the air conditioning system and the power windows/locks over time. Addressing these issues promptly can help extend the vehicle's lifespan.

How long will the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles, translating to potentially 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability is often affected by maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes, transmission services, and other preventative maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan.
Weaknesses over time include potential rust issues (especially in colder climates), wear and tear on the Stow 'n Go seating mechanisms, and the aforementioned electrical problems. Proper care is essential for maximizing its lifespan.

All the recalls are they said they already fixed looks like the problem I keep changing the coils and spark plugs and all four O2 sensors and it giving me p0300 P0305 p0175 p0172 and two other codes my abs lights are on and I changed the hubs all four it's more problems than I thought and dodge and Chrysler isn't backing up their products at all misfires after misfires

I wish I never baught the dodge caravan. Everything has went wrong. From the windows to the doors to the constant reporgraming that can cause an accident, to the AC being so loud I cant hear the raideo and so much more. This has costed me thousands. My husbands Toyota has needed no work and is 4 years older. There were a few recalls on the Toyota so I never had to worry. Dodge recalls noting and you end up paying ridiculous prices to repair. I deeply regret buying it. The valeue went down so fast that I can't trade it in without being in a large amount of debt. I hate you dodge and will never buy another dodge again!

Compared to the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota sienna, this van was very short on comfort and drivability. There were a few aspects of the van that were nice such as the stow and go seating, but it was cumbersome and difficult to get into sometimes. It certainly did not have a smooth ride as compared to its counterparts and the interior left much to be desired.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and multiple airbags.
Higher trims offer optional features like a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and a blind-spot monitoring system. The Uconnect infotainment system, available on some trims, provides access to audio controls, navigation (optional), and other vehicle settings. A rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player and screens is also available, making it ideal for families on long trips.
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, focusing mainly on basic safety systems like traction control.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be consulted for specific scores. Generally, the Grand Caravan performed reasonably well in crash tests for its class and era, but specific results can vary.

2012 Dodge Grand Caravan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000+, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000+, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Grand Caravan depreciates relatively quickly compared to some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and whether it has desirable features like Stow 'n Go seating and a rear-seat entertainment system. Well-maintained models with lower mileage command higher prices.

2012 Dodge Grand Caravan Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan is generally considered moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for a minivan. Fuel costs are reasonable, given its V6 engine, but not exceptional. Maintenance costs can be average, but repair costs may be higher if issues like TIPM failure or transmission problems arise. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglecting maintenance can lead to expensive repairs.

2012 Dodge Grand Caravan Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan Compare to Other Minivan Van?

Key rivals to the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan include the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Town & Country (essentially a more luxurious version of the Grand Caravan). In terms of performance, the Grand Caravan's V6 engine is competitive. Feature-wise, Stow 'n Go seating is a major advantage. However, the Sienna and Odyssey generally offer better reliability ratings and more refined interiors.
In terms of price, the Grand Caravan is often more affordable than the Toyota and Honda. The Chrysler Town & Country provides a more upscale experience but at a higher price point.
Alternatives to consider include a used Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey if reliability is a top priority, but be prepared to pay more. If budget is the primary concern and you value Stow 'n Go seating, the Grand Caravan is a reasonable choice. The Mazda5, though smaller, offered good fuel economy and was fun to drive, but lacked the space of the Grand Caravan. Consider your specific needs and priorities when making a decision.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Minivan Van?

The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan is ideal for budget-conscious families who prioritize practicality and cargo space. Its Stow 'n Go seating is a standout feature. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition of the used vehicle. It's generally a good option as a used vehicle if you find one that has been well-maintained and has a clean history.
Avoid base AVP trims if possible, as they lack many desirable features. The SXT or Crew trims offer a better balance of features and value. Thoroughly inspect the vehicle for potential issues, especially related to the TIPM and transmission, before purchasing.

Air conditioner malfunction in mine and 2 others

My air conditioner does not work anymore. No recalls apparent. My sister owned a 2005 and a 1998 and both cars air conditioners malfunctioned. I am wondering how many others have had the same problem.

Normally a Grand Caravan is an excellent vehicle.

I purchased this vehicle from Jannsens in McCook Nebraska. I've purchased several Grand Caravans in my lifetime and have gotten excellent service out of them. This van only had 105,000 miles on it and should have provided me with years of good service. Due to COVID I drove it very little. I normally would have driven it all over for my business. Had I driven it as normal it would have broke down within 3 months max.: Transmission and engine went out on this vehicle in less than a year after purchasing it. It would have never lasted even that long had it not been for COVID. This is NOT normal for this vehicle especially with this low of miles on it. I was told the previous owner was 1 person vehicle owner and they had it for 13 years (2011 + 13 = 2024). What year is it? 2021...hmmm.

Great vehicle

We've owned several mini-vans , but this is by far the best , has been very reliable over the 7 years we've owned it. Nothing has broken or fallen off , and you can't beat the versatility. The stow and go seats let you convert the van to hauling mode in a matter of minutes. Gas mileage is about what you'd expect for a V6 heavy van , but it's worth it. Great for vacation/traveling hauling the family to grandma's house, etc. I recommend the CREW trim level and also the FLEX-FUEL V6 to save a few bucks when regular un-leaded get's pricey .
