2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Review: Reliable Minivan With Low Ownership Costs As It Ages

Rating: 4.66
Based on 71 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The Dodge Grand Caravan is a minivan with a long history, offering practical and affordable family transportation. The 2019 model, part of its final generation, comes in a classic minivan body style. Key trims include SE, SE Plus, SXT, and GT. Pricing typically ranges from the low $20,000s to the low $30,000s when new. Its standout feature is its Stow 'n Go seating, allowing the second and third rows to fold completely into the floor, creating vast cargo space. This practicality makes it perennially popular.
The Good

The 2019 Grand Caravan excels in value and practicality. Performance is adequate for daily driving, and the comfortable ride appeals to families. While design is dated, Stow 'n Go seating is a huge advantage. Though fuel efficiency isn't class-leading, the overall affordability makes it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliable transportation and space for family adventures.

The Bad

The 2019 Grand Caravan's weaknesses include its outdated design and interior. Fuel economy is subpar compared to newer minivans. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the electrical system and transmission. The safety ratings are also not as high as some competitors, and the technology is not as advanced. Watch out for rust, especially in colder climates.

What Problems Does the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan often revolve around the electrical system, including issues with the power sliding doors, radio, and various sensors. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or slipping, are also commonly cited. Some owners have reported premature brake wear and issues with the air conditioning system. Engine misfires and oil leaks are also noted by some.

Recalls for the 2019 model have included concerns about the potential for the power sliding doors to open unexpectedly while driving, increasing the risk of injury. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information. Long-term reliability concerns often center on the longevity of the transmission and the potential for electrical gremlins to surface over time. While the Pentastar V6 engine is generally considered reliable, proper maintenance is essential to prevent issues. Earlier model years of the Grand Caravan (prior to 2011) had their own distinct set of common problems, but the 2019 model shares more similarities in potential issues with the 2011-2018 range, mainly centering on electrical and transmission durability. Regular servicing and addressing minor issues promptly can help mitigate some of these long-term concerns.

How long will the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan last?

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan, with consistent maintenance, can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability is tied to proactive maintenance. Weaknesses over time often manifest in electrical system glitches, transmission wear, and rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Neglecting fluid changes or ignoring minor repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Owners who prioritize preventative care tend to experience fewer major issues and enjoy a more extended period of reliable service from their Grand Caravan.

My best van for all my summer and winter journey
I never thought Dodge built the best van of the century ! It was the most convenient in style and capacity I have even seen the only thing missing is the cruise control ! So far it's my best caravan it's sophisticated at first cause I am old school from a dinosaur technological disadvantage era but as times goes on owning it for three weeks it gives me and my dog a haven to transportation for all our summer journey together! I love it better than my old Chrysler minivan!
Negative Owner Reviews

I have always wanted a van, and felt that it would be a good vehicle for going places with my grandchildren. I haven't had it long enough to have any real experience with how it handles for long drives. It feels much more like a car than a truck. It seems fairly comfortable so far.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan features a relatively basic tech suite compared to newer minivans. Standard is a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a rearview camera. Higher trims offer options like a DVD entertainment system with a screen for rear passengers, which is a definite plus for families. Driver-assistance features are limited; blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-path detection were available on some trims, but advanced features like adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist were not offered.

Safety features include standard airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional features included ParkSense rear park assist system.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA are crucial to consider. While specific ratings can vary, the Grand Caravan generally received acceptable but not outstanding scores. It's worth noting that its structural design is older, which impacts its performance in newer crash tests. Before purchasing, potential buyers should check the latest safety ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA to ensure it meets their safety requirements.

2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan had a starting MSRP in the low $20,000s when new, with higher trims reaching the low $30,000s. Used market prices currently range from around $10,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Grand Caravan depreciates relatively quickly due to its age and less desirable features compared to newer minivans. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has sought-after options like the DVD entertainment system or safety features. Lower trims and those with higher mileage will naturally command lower prices.

2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan generally presents moderate ownership costs. Insurance premiums are usually average for a minivan. Fuel costs can be higher due to its lower fuel economy compared to newer rivals. Maintenance is typically affordable, with readily available and relatively inexpensive parts. However, potential transmission or electrical repairs can be costly. Overall, while not the most economical, it provides reasonable long-term ownership costs, especially if well-maintained and major repairs are avoided.

2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan competes with minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, and Toyota Sienna. In terms of performance, the Grand Caravan's V6 engine is adequate but not as refined as those in the Honda and Toyota. Its features are dated compared to the Pacifica and Odyssey, lacking advanced safety and infotainment options. Reliability is a concern, with the Honda and Toyota generally scoring higher. However, the Grand Caravan shines in price, often being significantly more affordable.

Alternatives to consider include: The Chrysler Pacifica offers more modern features and a smoother ride. The Honda Odyssey provides superior reliability and a more engaging driving experience. The Toyota Sienna boasts excellent reliability and available all-wheel drive. If budget is the primary concern, the Grand Caravan remains a viable option. However, for those prioritizing features, reliability, and overall refinement, the Pacifica, Odyssey, or Sienna are generally better choices, albeit at a higher price point. The Kia Sedona (now Carnival) is another solid, often overlooked, competitor.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Minivan?

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan is ideal for budget-conscious families prioritizing space and practicality above all else. It's worth buying if you need a minivan and affordability is your top concern. However, be aware of its older design, lower fuel economy, and potential reliability issues. Purchasing a used model in good condition with a thorough inspection and service history is advisable. Higher trims like the SXT offer better value than the base SE. If your budget allows, consider newer and more refined minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica or Honda Odyssey, but if you simply need an affordable people-mover, the Grand Caravan can still be a reasonable choice.

I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone.

I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone. It has been an amazing family van and it holds a lot. But I've owned this vehicle for 5 years and I have put in two transmissions in it.

2019 Dodge Grand Caravan

The dealer doesn't tell you. The 2019 Grand Caravan does not come with a spare tire, a jack, or a lug wrench. You find that out when you're sitting on the side of the road with a flat tire.

Good Family Hauler

Purchased 2019 Crew Plus with 30k in July 2020. So far only complaint is the clunky UConnect system. Having owned 1988, 1995, 2000, and 2005 model years we have always found Caravans to be sensible, reliable, all round family centric vehicles. Could spend an extra $10k or more for a comparable Odyssey (Primary cars/bikes are Honda's) or Sienna but personally do not seethe long term benefit. As with all vehicles maintenance is key.

A good vehicle for the cost

Only having the vehicle for a few weeks, I can see this will meet my needs. It drives and handles nicely, and has the ability to carry passengers and cargo depending on the occasion. Predominately it will be a cargo carrier for training supplies, so with the 'Stow-n-Go" seating I have plenty of room to haul my training supplies. For a 6 cylinder, it is also getting very good gas mileage (this is very helpful too)!
