2006 Ford F-150 Review: A Budget-Friendly Long Lasting Truck

Rating: 4.26
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2006 Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the eleventh generation (2004-2008). This generation was known for its bolder styling and improved comfort. Available body styles include Regular Cab, SuperCab (extended), and SuperCrew (crew cab). Key trims ranged from the basic XL to the luxurious King Ranch. New pricing varied significantly, from around $20,000 to $40,000+ depending on configuration. Its popularity stemmed from its ruggedness, wide range of options, and being a workhorse for both personal and commercial use.
The Good

The 2006 F-150 offers solid performance with its V8 engine options, known for ample torque. Its robust design exudes confidence, appealing to those seeking a tough truck. It provides decent comfort for a truck of its era. While not the most efficient, it offers good value for money in the used market. For practical buyers, it's reliable and capable; for emotional buyers, it's a symbol of American strength.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2006 F-150 include spark plug issues on the 5.4L Triton engine, leading to difficult removals and potential damage. Rust, especially in regions with road salt, can be a concern. Some owners have reported transmission problems and issues with the electronic components over time. It is important to inspect these areas carefully before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2006 Ford F-150 Have?

The 2006 Ford F-150, particularly those equipped with the 5.4L Triton V8 engine, is known for spark plug issues. The two-piece spark plugs are prone to breaking during removal, which can be costly to repair. There have also been reports of issues with the fuel pump driver module (FPDM), which can lead to stalling or no-start conditions. Rust is a common concern, especially on models driven in areas with salted roads during winter. Body panels, frame, and undercarriage components are susceptible. Transmission issues, such as slipping or harsh shifting, have also been reported. Recalls for the 2006 F-150 have addressed issues ranging from airbag malfunctions to fuel leaks. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if they are not properly maintained or addressed. It's crucial to check the vehicle's history for any outstanding recalls and previous repairs. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and spark plug replacements (performed carefully), can mitigate some of these concerns. Prior model years within the same generation also experienced similar issues, so a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2006 Ford F-150 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Ford F-150 can easily exceed 200,000 miles or last for 15+ years. Average mileage varies, but many well-maintained examples reach 250,000 miles. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses such as rust, spark plug issues (5.4L), and potential transmission problems can shorten its lifespan if ignored. Regular oil changes, rustproofing, and addressing issues promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity. The 5.4L engine's timing chain system can also be a long-term concern, requiring eventual replacement. Overall, proactive maintenance is key to achieving a long service life.
Positive Owner Reviews
Mike S.
I've owned this truck for over 10 years. It's been incredibly reliable for hauling and general work around the property. The gas mileage isn't great, but that's to be expected.
Jessica L.
Bought this truck used and it's been a great vehicle. A few minor repairs here and there, but nothing major. Perfect for weekend projects and trips to the hardware store.
Karen M.
I like the spacious cab and the comfortable ride. It's a good truck for long road trips. I wish the fuel economy was better.
Negative Owner Reviews
David B.
It's an older truck, so it has its quirks. The interior is a bit dated, but the engine runs well. I use it for commuting and light hauling.
Sarah P.
It's a decent truck, but it's starting to show its age. I've had to replace a few parts recently. Still, it's a reliable vehicle overall.
Emily G.
I have had too many problems with this truck, and I regret buying it. Constant repairs and maintenance issues. I would not recommend.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Ford F-150's tech was fairly basic for its time. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player, and higher trims offered an upgraded sound system. Navigation was an optional feature in some trims. Driver-assistance features were limited; it typically included cruise control.
Safety features included standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and available side airbags on some trims.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good performance in frontal crash tests, but side-impact ratings were more variable depending on cab configuration and airbag availability.
Optional features included things like power-adjustable seats, upgraded audio systems (e.g., with MP3 capability), and rear parking sensors. Some models also had features like heated seats and automatic climate control. While not advanced by modern standards, these features provided decent comfort and convenience for the time. Keep in mind the feature set varies dramatically based on trim level and packages selected by the original owner. Checking the original window sticker (if available) is the best way to verify the exact equipment on a specific vehicle.

2006 Ford F-150 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Ford F-150 ranged from around $20,000 for a basic XL model to over $40,000 for a fully-loaded King Ranch. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been significant due to age and high production numbers. Factors affecting resale value include: condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage (lower mileage is better), trim level (higher trims like Lariat and King Ranch are more desirable), and engine (5.4L may be less desirable due to spark plug issues). 4x4 models also tend to hold their value better.

2006 Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 Ford F-150 are typically moderate, but can vary based on driving record and location. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs, particularly those related to the 5.4L engine or rust, can be expensive. Long-term ownership can be costly if significant repairs are needed. It's not the most economical vehicle to own due to fuel consumption and potential repair bills, but its lower purchase price can offset some of these costs. Careful maintenance is essential to keep costs down.

2006 Ford F-150 Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Ford F-150 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2006 Ford F-150 competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the F-150's 5.4L V8 offered competitive power, but the Silverado's engines were sometimes considered slightly more refined. Features were comparable across the segment, with each offering a range of trim levels and options. Reliability is a mixed bag; the F-150 has its known issues (spark plugs, rust), while the Silverado had its own (e.g., oil consumption). The Tundra generally enjoys a reputation for strong reliability. Price-wise, the F-150 is typically similar to the Silverado and Ram in the used market.
If reliability is a top concern, the Toyota Tundra is a compelling alternative, though it might command a higher price. The Chevrolet Silverado offers a similar experience to the F-150 with comparable performance and features. The Dodge Ram offers more distinctive styling. The F-150 holds its own in this competitive field, but buyers should carefully research the specific model year and engine configuration of any truck they consider. Test driving multiple vehicles and getting a pre-purchase inspection are highly recommended.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Ford F-150 a Good Truck?

The 2006 Ford F-150 is a decent used truck for those needing a capable and relatively affordable workhorse. It's ideal for buyers who need to tow or haul occasionally and don't require the latest tech. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and price. A well-maintained, rust-free example is preferable. Models with the 4.6L V8 may be more reliable than the 5.4L. Given its age, buying used is the only option. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial to identify any potential issues. It’s a good buy for someone willing to perform some maintenance and repairs themselves, or who doesn’t mind paying for them.

Lots of Issues

I have had too many problems with this truck, and I regret buying it. Constant repairs and maintenance issues. I would not recommend.

Tough and Dependable

This truck is tough and dependable. I've used it for everything from hauling lumber to camping trips. It's a solid vehicle.

Average Gas Mileage

The gas mileage is not impressive at all. Otherwise a decent truck.
