2005 Ford F-150 Review: Well Made Comfortable Half Ton Truck With A Long Life Expectancy

Rating: 4.23
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Ford F-150 is part of the eleventh generation of the F-Series, a highly successful line of trucks. It's a full-size pickup truck available in various body styles: regular cab, SuperCab (extended), and SuperCrew (crew cab). Model years for this generation ran from 2004-2008. Key trims included XL, STX, XLT, FX4, Lariat, and King Ranch. When new, pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $40,000+, depending on configuration and trim. Its bold styling and improvements in ride comfort and interior quality made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2005 F-150 offered a blend of traditional truck capability and improved refinement. Performance was solid, especially with the V8 engines. Its bolder design appealed to truck enthusiasts, while the comfortable interior and ride quality made it suitable for daily use. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provided a good balance of utility and value for its time.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses in the 2005 F-150 include spark plug issues in the 5.4L V8 engine, potential rust problems, especially in colder climates, and some reports of transmission issues. Buyers should also check for signs of excessive wear and tear, particularly in higher-mileage examples, and ensure all recalls have been addressed.

What Problems Does the 2005 Ford F-150 Have?

The 2005 Ford F-150, while generally a reliable truck, has some frequently reported problems. The 5.4L V8 engine is notorious for spark plug issues, often breaking during removal, which can be a costly repair. This is largely due to the two-piece spark plug design used in some engines. Rust can be a concern, particularly in regions with road salt, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. Some owners have reported transmission problems, ranging from rough shifting to complete failure, though this is less common than the spark plug issue.
Recalls for the 2005 F-150 have addressed issues such as cruise control system malfunctions, potential fuel leakage, and problems with the parking brake. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been performed.
Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues, as well as general wear and tear. Proper maintenance is essential to mitigate these risks. Specifically, ensure regular spark plug changes are performed by a qualified mechanic who understands the potential issues. Regular rustproofing and undercarriage washes can help prevent corrosion. Careful attention to transmission fluid changes can also prolong the life of the transmission.

How long will the 2005 Ford F-150 last?

Given the age of the 2005 Ford F-150, many have likely exceeded 200,000 miles. With consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing repairs promptly, these trucks can last well over 250,000 miles or even longer. However, long-term durability is heavily dependent on maintenance habits.
Over time, weaknesses tend to emerge, such as increased susceptibility to rust, especially in areas exposed to salt. Suspension components may wear, leading to a rougher ride and reduced handling. Engine and transmission components may require more frequent repairs as mileage increases. The electrical system can also develop gremlins, leading to intermittent issues. A well-maintained example is far more likely to provide continued service than one that has been neglected.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
This truck has been incredibly reliable. I've used it for everything from hauling materials to weekend camping trips. The engine is strong, and it's comfortable enough for long drives. A few minor repairs over the years, but nothing major.
David M.
I bought this truck used several years ago, and it's still running great. I've kept up with the maintenance, and it hasn't let me down. Good value for the money.
Linda P.
I use this truck to tow a small camper, and it handles it with no problem. The engine has plenty of power, and the brakes are strong. I'm very happy with its towing capabilities.
Negative Owner Reviews
Mary L.
It's a capable truck, no doubt, but the fuel economy is pretty bad. Be prepared to spend a lot at the pump. Otherwise, it's been a solid vehicle for light-duty work.
Susan K.
It's an older truck, so it has some quirks. The interior is pretty basic, and the ride isn't the smoothest. But it's a dependable vehicle for everyday use.
Robert B.
I've had some issues with the transmission. It shifts roughly sometimes, and I'm worried it will need to be replaced soon. Other than that, it's a decent truck.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Ford F-150 offered technology that was standard for its time. Built-in tech included features like AM/FM radio, available CD player (single or multi-disc), and optional cassette player. Higher trims offered features like a premium sound system.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) was standard, and some models offered optional features like power-adjustable pedals and rear parking sensors. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.
Safety features included front airbags. Side airbags were available as an option on some trims. Standard safety features also included seatbelts for all occupants.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show generally good performance for the 2005 F-150. The SuperCrew model typically scored higher in occupant protection compared to the regular and SuperCab models. However, it's important to remember that crash test standards have evolved significantly since 2005.
Optional features varied by trim level. Higher trims like the Lariat and King Ranch offered features such as automatic climate control, leather seats, and upgraded audio systems. Lower trims offered basic features with fewer options.

2005 Ford F-150 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Ford F-150 ranged in price from around $20,000 for a base XL model to over $40,000 for a fully equipped King Ranch. As a used vehicle, prices now range significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level. Expect to find them anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 or potentially higher for exceptionally well-maintained, low-mileage examples.
Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Resale value is primarily affected by condition, mileage, and trim level. 4x4 models and those with the 5.4L V8 tend to hold their value slightly better. Regular maintenance records also contribute positively to resale value. Trucks with rust or mechanical issues will fetch significantly lower prices.

2005 Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2005 Ford F-150 are generally moderate, depending on driving record and coverage. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate to high, given the potential for issues like spark plug problems and rust repair. Long-term ownership costs can be significant due to potential repairs and fuel consumption. While relatively affordable to purchase, the 2005 F-150 is not the most economical vehicle to own long-term.

2005 Ford F-150 Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Ford F-150 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2005 Ford F-150 competed against trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the F-150's V8 engines were competitive, although some found the Silverado's 5.3L V8 to be slightly more refined. Feature-wise, the F-150 offered a similar range of options to its rivals, with higher trims providing comparable levels of comfort and technology.
Reliability is where the F-150 has some drawbacks compared to the Toyota Tundra, which is generally considered more reliable. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are generally similar in reliability to the F-150. The Dodge Ram offered a more distinctive styling but has also known for reliability issues.
Price-wise, the F-150 was generally competitive with its rivals. Used market prices are also similar, making it a matter of individual preference and condition of the specific vehicle.
As for alternatives, if reliability is a top priority, a Toyota Tundra from the same era might be a better choice. If you prefer a more refined driving experience, a Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra could be considered. However, the F-150 offers a good balance of capability, comfort, and price, making it a viable option for many buyers.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Ford F-150 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2005 Ford F-150 is ideal for someone needing a capable and reasonably comfortable truck for occasional hauling, towing, or general utility. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example at a good price, with service records showing regular maintenance. It's not a good choice if you need maximum fuel economy or require bulletproof reliability.
Given its age, you'll only be buying used. Look for XLT or Lariat trims, as they offer a better balance of features and price than the base XL. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to identify potential issues before you buy.

I use this truck to tow a small camper, and it handles it with no problem. The engine has plenty of power, and the brakes are strong. I'm very happy with its towing capabilities.

Rust Problems

Comfortable and Functional

The seats are surprisingly comfortable for a truck of this age. The controls are easy to use, and the layout is functional. It's a practical and reliable vehicle.

Engine Runs Great

The engine still runs strong. Regular oil changes and maintenance have kept it in top shape. Very happy with the engine performance.

Not the Best on Gas

As expected for a truck of this size, the fuel economy isn't great. It's fine for short trips, but long drives can be expensive. Be aware of the fuel costs.
