Rating: 4.02
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Ford Escape marked the beginning of the third generation, offering a fresh, modern take on the compact SUV. Its unibody construction and car-like handling distinguished it from earlier models. Key trims included the S, SE, and Titanium. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000 when new. The Escape's popularity stemmed from its stylish design, available fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines, and user-friendly technology, appealing to a wide range of buyers seeking practicality and modern features.
The Good

The 2013 Ford Escape offered a blend of advantages. Performance-wise, the EcoBoost engines provided ample power and decent fuel efficiency.
Its modern design appealed emotionally, while practical buyers appreciated the comfortable interior, ample cargo space, and available technology. While reliability had some concerns, its overall value proposition made it an attractive option for many.

The Bad

The 2013 Ford Escape had some known weaknesses.
Potential buyers should watch out for reported issues with the MyFord Touch system, which could be laggy and unreliable. Some owners reported engine issues, particularly with the 1.6L EcoBoost, including coolant leaks and potential overheating. Transmission problems were also noted by some owners. Regular maintenance and careful inspection are crucial.

What Problems Does the 2013 Ford Escape Have?

The 2013 Ford Escape had several frequently reported problems. One of the most significant issues was related to the 1.6L EcoBoost engine, which suffered from coolant leaks into the cylinders, potentially leading to engine failure. This issue led to recalls. The MyFord Touch infotainment system was also a common source of frustration due to its slow response times, glitches, and general unreliability.
Transmission issues, including rough shifting and hesitation, were reported by some owners, though less frequently than the engine and infotainment problems. Additionally, there were concerns about the power liftgate malfunctioning.
Recalls were issued for various issues, including fuel line problems, airbag malfunctions, and the aforementioned engine cooling issue. Long-term reliability was affected by these early issues, potentially leading to higher maintenance costs and reduced resale value. Potential buyers should carefully inspect vehicles for evidence of these problems and check the vehicle's recall history.

How long will the 2013 Ford Escape last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Ford Escape can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, long-term durability is significantly influenced by maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance, particularly oil changes and coolant flushes, can exacerbate known issues like the 1.6L EcoBoost engine problems.
The MyFord Touch system, even with updates, may become increasingly outdated and potentially fail over time. Suspension components and other wear items will eventually require replacement, but these are standard for any vehicle. Escapes that received diligent care and timely repairs are more likely to provide extended service.
Positive Owner Reviews
Sarah M.
I've owned my 2013 Escape for over 10 years now. It's been incredibly reliable, but I'm starting to see some wear and tear. The gas mileage isn't what it used to be, and some of the features feel dated. Still a good value for the price I paid back then.
John B.
This car is perfect for my daily commute. It's comfortable, gets decent gas mileage, and is easy to park. I appreciate the cargo space for groceries and weekend trips.
Jessica P.
I really like the Sync system in my Escape. It's easy to use and integrates well with my phone. The voice controls are helpful while driving.
Negative Owner Reviews
Emily L.
I've had some issues with the transmission slipping in my 2013 Escape. It's been frustrating to deal with. I've had it serviced, but the problem persists intermittently.
David K.
For the price, the 2013 Escape is a good value. However, the interior feels a bit cheap, and the engine could use a little more power. Overall, it's a decent car but not exceptional.
Ashley R.
I was expecting better fuel economy from my 2013 Escape. I don't get the mileage that was advertised. That's my biggest disappointment.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Ford Escape came with a range of tech and safety features. Standard features included a basic audio system, air conditioning, and cruise control on the base S trim. Higher trims like the SE and Titanium offered more advanced features.

Entertainment: The MyFord Touch infotainment system was available on higher trims, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and smartphone integration (though it was often criticized for its performance). A premium Sony audio system was also offered.

Driver-Assistance: Available features included a rearview camera, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. However, advanced driver-assistance systems like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning were not available.

Safety: Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Optional features included a blind-spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2013 Ford Escape received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS. The NHTSA gave it an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars.

2013 Ford Escape Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Ford Escape ranged from around $23,000 for the base S trim to $30,000+ for a fully equipped Titanium model. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $13,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.
The Escape has experienced typical depreciation for its class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's history (accident-free, well-maintained), mileage, trim level (Titanium models hold value better), and the presence of desirable options. Vehicles with a documented history of the 1.6L EcoBoost engine issues may have lower resale values.

2013 Ford Escape Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2013 Ford Escape are generally average for its class. Fuel costs will vary based on the engine choice and driving habits. The 1.6L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines can be economical if driven conservatively. Maintenance costs can be moderate, but potential repairs, especially related to the 1.6L EcoBoost engine or MyFord Touch system, can increase long-term ownership costs. Due to potential engine and electronic issues, it might not be the most economical option compared to some rivals.

2013 Ford Escape Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Ford Escape is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Ford Escape Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Ford Escape competed with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Chevrolet Equinox.

Performance: The Escape's EcoBoost engines offered competitive performance, but the Mazda CX-5 was known for its superior handling.

Features: The Escape offered a comparable range of features, but the MyFord Touch system was a significant weakness compared to rivals' infotainment systems.

Reliability: The Escape's reliability was a concern, especially with the 1.6L EcoBoost engine, whereas the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 had better reputations for reliability. The Chevy Equinox had its own share of issues but was generally comparable.

Price: The Escape's pricing was competitive when new, and used prices reflect this.

Alternatives: If reliability is a top priority, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 are better alternatives. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience. The Chevrolet Equinox provides a similar experience but might have better deals in the used car market depending on location. Buyers should carefully weigh the Escape's features and performance against its potential reliability concerns when making a decision.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Ford Escape a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Ford Escape is ideal for buyers who prioritize style and available technology, and are willing to accept some potential reliability risks.
It can be worth buying used if found at a good price, thoroughly inspected, and has a clean maintenance history. Avoid the 1.6L EcoBoost engine if possible due to known issues. The 2.5L or 2.0L EcoBoost are more reliable alternatives. A Titanium trim in excellent condition with documented maintenance might be a reasonable option, but always get a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic to assess its condition before committing to the purchase. Consider a newer model or competing brand for better reliability.

Reliable but Showing Its Age

I've owned my 2013 Escape for over 10 years now. It's been incredibly reliable, but I'm starting to see some wear and tear. The gas mileage isn't what it used to be, and some of the features feel dated. Still a good value for the price I paid back then.

Good Value, Could Be Better

For the price, the 2013 Escape is a good value. However, the interior feels a bit cheap, and the engine could use a little more power. Overall, it's a decent car but not exceptional.
