Rating: 4.26
Based on 33 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The Ford Escape, a compact SUV, has been a staple in Ford's lineup since its introduction in 2001. The 2021 model is part of the fourth generation, offering a blend of practicality and style. Key trims include the S, SE, SEL, and Titanium. Its popularity stems from its diverse powertrain options, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, and a comfortable ride. Pricing typically ranges from $25,000 to $38,000 depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2021 Ford Escape boasts a comfortable and stylish interior, appealing to emotional buyers. Its efficient engine options, including hybrid models, offer excellent fuel economy, attracting practical buyers. Performance is adequate for daily driving, and the available technology adds to the overall driving experience. Reliability is generally good, and it represents solid value in the competitive compact SUV segment.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times. The base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. The rear seat comfort isn't as spacious as some competitors, and some interior materials may feel less premium than expected. Potential buyers should be aware of these points before making a purchase.

What Problems Does the 2021 Ford Escape Have?

The 2021 Ford Escape has faced a few frequently reported problems. Some owners have experienced issues with the infotainment system, including freezing, lagging, and connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or hesitation, have also been reported, particularly in models equipped with the 8-speed automatic transmission.
Recalls have been issued for certain 2021 Escape models, often related to fuel leaks, engine stalling, or potential fire hazards. Check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information specific to your VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns center around the durability of the hybrid battery pack, particularly as the vehicle ages and accumulates mileage. Some owners have also reported issues with the climate control system, including inconsistent temperature regulation. It's important to maintain the vehicle according to the recommended service schedule and address any unusual noises or performance issues promptly to prevent more significant problems down the road. Consult owner forums and independent mechanic reviews for a broader understanding of potential issues.

How long will the 2021 Ford Escape last?

With regular maintenance, the 2021 Ford Escape can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Proper oil changes, timely replacement of wear-and-tear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are crucial.
Long-term durability concerns often revolve around the hybrid battery pack in hybrid models, requiring potential replacement after 8-10 years. Some owners have also reported issues with the transmission and infotainment system over time. Regular inspections and preventive maintenance can help mitigate these weaknesses.
Positive Owner Reviews
Sarah Miller
I appreciate the fuel efficiency of the 2021 Escape. It's great for commuting. However, the cargo area is smaller than I expected, which can be limiting for road trips or hauling larger items.
John Davis
The ride quality is excellent, very smooth and comfortable. The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use. I especially like the driver assistance features.
David Rodriguez
The 2021 Escape offers a lot of features for the price. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of technology and safety equipment included in the base model.
Negative Owner Reviews
Emily Chen
While the Escape is practical, I found the base engine to be a bit underpowered, especially when trying to accelerate quickly or merge onto the highway. I wish I had opted for the upgraded engine.
Michael Wilson
I've had a few minor issues with the vehicle, which is a little concerning. Nothing major, but it's been a bit frustrating. Hopefully, it's just a fluke.
Christopher Anderson
The interior design is okay, but some of the materials feel a little cheap, especially considering the price of the vehicle. I expected a bit more quality.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Ford Escape comes standard with a decent array of tech features. The base S trim includes a 4.2-inch screen and FordPass Connect with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Optional features include a premium B&O sound system, navigation, and a panoramic sunroof.
Driver-assistance features are bundled in the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist are available as optional upgrades.
Safety features include a rearview camera, multiple airbags, and stability control.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2021 Ford Escape a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the 2021 Escape a "Top Safety Pick" rating. These ratings reflect the vehicle's strong performance in crash tests and its advanced safety features.

2021 Ford Escape Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Ford Escape ranged from approximately $25,000 for the base S trim to around $38,000 for the top-tier Titanium model. Currently, used market prices for the 2021 Escape vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from $18,000 to $30,000.
The Escape depreciates at a moderate rate, similar to other compact SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and demand for specific trims (e.g., hybrid models tend to hold their value better). Color and optional features also play a role.

2021 Ford Escape Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Ford Escape is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, with hybrid models offering significant savings. Routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations) is relatively affordable. Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Ford Escape a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Ford Escape is a well-rounded compact SUV suitable for individuals and small families seeking a comfortable, fuel-efficient, and technologically equipped vehicle. It’s worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, if you prioritize fuel economy (particularly with the hybrid models) and a comfortable ride. The SEL trim offers a good balance of features and value. Be sure to check for any outstanding recalls and consider a pre-purchase inspection to assess the vehicle's condition, especially regarding the transmission and infotainment system. If reliability is your top priority, consider a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V instead.

Good Fuel Economy, But Small Cargo Space

I appreciate the fuel efficiency of the 2021 Escape. It's great for commuting. However, the cargo area is smaller than I expected, which can be limiting for road trips or hauling larger items.

Engine Lacks Power

While the Escape is practical, I found the base engine to be a bit underpowered, especially when trying to accelerate quickly or merge onto the highway. I wish I had opted for the upgraded engine.

Some Reliability Concerns

I've had a few minor issues with the vehicle, which is a little concerning. Nothing major, but it's been a bit frustrating. Hopefully, it's just a fluke.

Interior Materials Feel Cheap

The interior design is okay, but some of the materials feel a little cheap, especially considering the price of the vehicle. I expected a bit more quality.

Average Performance, Good Practicality

The Escape isn't the most exciting vehicle to drive, but it's practical and reliable. It gets the job done and is comfortable for everyday use.
