2008 Ford Mustang Review: Dependable Year For The Comfortable & Powerful Muscle Car

Rating: 4.57
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Ford Mustang is a continuation of the fifth-generation Mustang, which debuted in 2005 with retro-inspired styling. Available as a coupe or convertible, it offered a blend of classic muscle car looks and modern amenities. Key trims included the base model, GT, and Shelby GT500. Pricing ranged from around $20,000 to over $40,000 when new. Its iconic design and accessible performance made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2008 Mustang offers a thrilling performance, especially in GT and Shelby variants, appealing to emotional buyers. Its iconic design turns heads. For practical buyers, it offers reasonable reliability, decent comfort for daily driving, and good value for money in the used market. However, fuel efficiency is not its strongest suit.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2008 Mustang include interior plastics that can feel cheap and a solid rear axle, which affects handling on uneven surfaces. Rust can be an issue in certain climates, so check the undercarriage. Certain models may experience electrical issues or problems with the automatic transmission, so be sure to inspect before buying.

What Problems Does the 2008 Ford Mustang Have?

The 2008 Ford Mustang, like any vehicle, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue is related to the interior, specifically the cheap plastics used in the dashboard and door panels, which can be prone to cracking or fading over time. Another reported problem involves the automatic transmission, with some owners experiencing rough shifting or slipping, especially in higher mileage vehicles.
Electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows, door locks, or audio system, have also been reported. Rust is a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters where road salt is used. It's crucial to inspect the undercarriage and lower body panels for signs of corrosion before purchasing.
Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any open recalls related to the 2008 Mustang's VIN. Long-term reliability concerns typically revolve around the issues mentioned above, along with potential problems with the cooling system and the rear axle. The GT500, while powerful, can be more expensive to maintain due to its high-performance components. While no specific problems are directly related to this model year in particular, it's still worth noting the potential general issues with the Mustang from this generation.

How long will the 2008 Ford Mustang last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Ford Mustang can easily exceed 200,000 miles or provide over 15 years of service. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs are crucial. Long-term durability depends heavily on driving habits and environment. The engine and transmission are generally robust if maintained well. Weaknesses over time can include suspension components (bushings, shocks), the aforementioned interior plastics, and potential rust issues in certain regions. Models that are abused or neglected will naturally have a shorter lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
Emily R.
I've owned my 2008 Mustang for over 10 years, and it's been incredibly reliable. It still looks great, and I get compliments on it all the time. The ride is a bit stiff, but that's to be expected with a sports car.
David L.
You can't beat the value of a used 2008 Mustang. It offers decent performance and classic styling at an affordable price. Just be prepared for potential maintenance issues due to its age.
Jessica P.
The 2008 Mustang is a classic American muscle car. It's fun to drive, turns heads, and has a great heritage. I'm proud to own one.
Negative Owner Reviews
John S.
I bought this Mustang used a few years ago. It's a blast to drive, especially with the V6. However, the interior plastics feel cheap, and the gas mileage isn't great. It also requires more maintenance now that it's older.
Sarah M.
The Mustang is a fun weekend car, but it's not the most practical for everyday use. The back seats are small, and the trunk space is limited. Also, visibility isn't the best.
Michael B.
I absolutely love the look of the 2008 Mustang. However, I wish I had gotten the GT with the V8. The V6 is adequate, but it lacks the power I was hoping for.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Ford Mustang's built-in tech was relatively basic for its time. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered optional features like a Shaker 500 or Shaker 1000 audio system with enhanced sound quality and multiple speakers. Navigation was not a common option in 2008 Mustangs.
Driver-assistance features were also limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control were standard on some trims, but features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and parking sensors were not available.
Safety features included front airbags and side airbags. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the specific test, but the 2008 Mustang generally received good scores for frontal impact protection. Rollover ratings were typically lower due to the vehicle's high center of gravity, especially in the convertible model. The GT model offered standard antilock brakes, improving safety. Optional features included remote keyless entry and an anti-theft system.
Overall, the 2008 Mustang prioritized a classic driving experience over advanced technology, which was typical for vehicles of that era. It is important to note that technology such as Bluetooth was not always standard, and many features now common were unavailable.

2008 Ford Mustang Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Ford Mustang ranged from approximately $20,000 for a base model to over $40,000 for a Shelby GT500. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level. Expect to pay anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000 or more, with GT and Shelby models commanding higher prices. Depreciation has been significant, but well-maintained examples, especially rare trims like the Shelby GT500, hold their value better. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, title status, and any modifications.

2008 Ford Mustang Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2008 Ford Mustang can vary depending on driving record and location, but are generally moderate. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are relatively average, but repairs can be more expensive for GT and Shelby models due to specialized parts. Long-term ownership can be costly if major repairs are needed. Overall, the 2008 Mustang isn't the most economical car to own, particularly the higher-performance trims.

2008 Ford Mustang Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Ford Mustang is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Ford Mustang Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2008 Ford Mustang's key rivals included the Dodge Challenger (though a new generation was just arriving) and the Chevrolet Camaro (which was absent during this model year). In terms of performance, the Mustang GT offered a comparable experience to other V8-powered competitors. However, the Challenger provided more interior space and a smoother ride, while the Mustang offered more nimble handling.
In terms of features, the Mustang was generally competitive but lacked some of the advanced tech found in other cars. Reliability was generally on par, although some specific issues affected the Mustang. Price-wise, the Mustang often offered a good value proposition, typically undercutting rivals.
Alternatives to the 2008 Mustang include the Nissan 350Z/370Z for sharper handling and sportier driving dynamics, or potentially a used BMW 3 Series Coupe for a more refined and technologically advanced experience, albeit at a higher price and potentially higher maintenance costs. If interior space and ride comfort are priorities, the Dodge Challenger might be a better choice. If focusing on performance and willing to consider something newer, consider waiting for a later model Chevrolet Camaro.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Ford Mustang a Good Coupe?

The 2008 Ford Mustang is ideal for those who appreciate classic muscle car styling and enjoy a sporty driving experience without breaking the bank. It's a worthwhile buy, especially in the used market, if you're looking for a fun and engaging car. The GT model offers a good balance of performance and affordability. However, consider the base V6 model if fuel economy is a concern. Before purchasing, have a mechanic inspect the car for potential issues, and check for any signs of rust, especially on the undercarriage. A well-maintained example can provide years of enjoyment.

Fun Car, Showing Its Age

I bought this Mustang used a few years ago. It's a blast to drive, especially with the V6. However, the interior plastics feel cheap, and the gas mileage isn't great. It also requires more maintenance now that it's older.

Reliable and Stylish

I've owned my 2008 Mustang for over 10 years, and it's been incredibly reliable. It still looks great, and I get compliments on it all the time. The ride is a bit stiff, but that's to be expected with a sports car.

Great Value for the Money

You can't beat the value of a used 2008 Mustang. It offers decent performance and classic styling at an affordable price. Just be prepared for potential maintenance issues due to its age.

Not the Most Practical Car

The Mustang is a fun weekend car, but it's not the most practical for everyday use. The back seats are small, and the trunk space is limited. Also, visibility isn't the best.

Love the Styling, Engine Could Be Better

I absolutely love the look of the 2008 Mustang. However, I wish I had gotten the GT with the V8. The V6 is adequate, but it lacks the power I was hoping for.

A Classic for a Reason

The 2008 Mustang is a classic American muscle car. It's fun to drive, turns heads, and has a great heritage. I'm proud to own one.

Great First Car

I got my 2008 Mustang as my first car, and I love it! It's fun to drive and looks great. It is fairly cheap to insure compared to other sports cars of the same age too.

Handles well, but outdated interior

The Mustang handles really well for its age. The steering is responsive and the car feels planted in the corners. The interior, however, is definitely showing its age. The design feels very dated and the materials are not great.

Gas Mileage Could Be Better

I enjoy driving my 2008 Mustang, but the gas mileage isn't great. I find myself filling up the tank more often than I'd like.
