Rating: 4.50
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025

The 2013 Ford Mustang is a continuation of the fifth-generation Mustang, known for its retro styling and modern performance. Available as a coupe or convertible, it offered a range of trims including the V6, GT, Boss 302, and Shelby GT500. Its popularity stems from its iconic design, powerful engine options, and relatively affordable price point, ranging from around $22,000 to over $55,000 depending on the trim and options. The Mustang stands out for its blend of classic muscle car appeal and contemporary technology.

The Good

The 2013 Mustang offers exhilarating performance with powerful engine choices, appealing to the emotional buyer. Its iconic design and heritage further enhance this appeal. For practical buyers, it provides decent reliability, acceptable fuel efficiency (depending on the engine), and strong value for money compared to other sports cars. Comfort levels are reasonable for a performance-oriented vehicle.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2013 Mustang include interior plastics that can feel cheap, limited rear seat space, and potential issues with the automatic transmission in some models. Owners should also watch out for potential oil consumption in certain engines and check for signs of rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. Some reports of track bar failure in the rear suspension have also surfaced.

What Problems Does the 2013 Ford Mustang Have?

The 2013 Ford Mustang has several frequently reported problems. One common issue is excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 5.0L V8 engine. Owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between oil changes. Another issue is related to the automatic transmission, with some owners experiencing harsh shifting or slipping. The clutch in manual transmission models can also experience premature wear. Some owners have reported issues with the MyFord Touch infotainment system, including freezing, slow response times, and connectivity problems. There have been reports of track bar failure in the rear suspension, especially in performance-oriented models that see track use. Recalls for the 2013 Mustang included issues related to fuel tank leaks and potential driveshaft failures in certain GT500 models. Long-term reliability concerns include potential rust, especially in areas with road salt, and the durability of some interior plastic components. It's always recommended to check the vehicle's history for any recalls or service bulletins before purchasing.

How long will the 2013 Ford Mustang last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Ford Mustang can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service depend heavily on driving habits and how well the car is maintained. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs are crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, especially in northern climates. Weaknesses include potential oil consumption in certain engines, clutch wear in manual models, and potential failures of the MyFord Touch system. The longevity of the suspension components also depends on usage and road conditions.

Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
The Mustang is a blast to drive, especially the V8. However, the interior feels a little dated and the gas mileage isn't great. Reliability has been okay, but I've had a few minor repairs.
Emily R.
I love my Mustang! It's stylish, powerful, and surprisingly affordable for what you get. The backseat is a bit cramped, but I don't usually have passengers back there anyway.
David L.
This Mustang is a classic. Good power, decent handling, and a timeless design. The technology is a bit behind modern cars, but it's still a great driving experience.
Negative Owner Reviews
Michael B.
I've had a few minor issues with the car, like the radio cutting out occasionally, but overall it's been a great car. The performance is excellent and it's a real head-turner.
Robert K.
The car is fast and fun, but the build quality isn't the greatest. I've noticed some rattles and the paint seems a bit thin. Still, it's a great value for the price.
Melissa C.
My biggest complaint is the interior. It feels cheap and plasticky. The exterior is gorgeous, and the car drives well, but the interior lets it down.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Ford Mustang comes with standard tech like a basic audio system, auxiliary input, and power windows and locks. Higher trims and optional packages offer features like Ford's SYNC system (voice-activated communications and entertainment), MyFord Touch infotainment (with a touchscreen interface), Shaker audio systems, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern cars but include antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control. Optional features included rear parking sensors. Safety features include front and side airbags. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA generally show good performance, with overall ratings typically around 4 or 5 stars. IIHS ratings also indicate good performance in most categories, but it's important to check specific ratings for the coupe and convertible versions as they can differ. The MyFord Touch system, while offering advanced features for the time, is known to be slow and buggy compared to modern infotainment systems. Standard safety features are adequate, but lacking modern driver-assistance technologies like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning.

2013 Ford Mustang Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Ford Mustang ranged from around $22,000 for a base V6 coupe to over $55,000 for a fully loaded Shelby GT500. Current used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $35,000+. Depreciation has been moderate, with the GT and Shelby GT500 models holding their value relatively well due to their performance and desirability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and whether it has a manual or automatic transmission. Well-maintained examples with desirable options will command higher prices.

2013 Ford Mustang Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Ford Mustang's ownership costs can vary. Insurance premiums are typically moderate, but higher for GT and Shelby GT500 models. Fuel costs depend heavily on driving habits and engine choice. Maintenance costs are average, with readily available parts. Repairs can be more expensive for specialized components on performance trims. Overall, the V6 model is relatively economical, while the GT and Shelby GT500 can be costly due to fuel consumption, potential repairs, and higher insurance rates. Long term costs will be average to high depending on trim.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Ford Mustang Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2013 Ford Mustang's key rivals include the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. In terms of performance, the Mustang GT and Camaro SS offer similar horsepower, but the Mustang is often considered more agile. The Challenger offers a more comfortable ride but less sporty handling. Feature-wise, the Mustang and Camaro are comparable, but the Challenger boasts a more spacious interior. Reliability is similar across all three, though individual experiences vary. Price-wise, the Mustang is generally competitive. Alternatives to the Mustang could include the Nissan 370Z for sharper handling or the Hyundai Genesis Coupe for a more refined experience. The Camaro offers similar muscle car appeal, while the Challenger provides a more comfortable and spacious option. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities, with the Mustang excelling in blending classic styling with modern performance at a reasonable price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Ford Mustang a Good Coupe?

The 2013 Ford Mustang is ideal for those seeking a stylish and powerful sports car with a rich heritage. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, for enthusiasts looking for a blend of performance and affordability. The GT trim offers the best balance of power and price. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to check for common issues like oil consumption or transmission problems. Avoid models with extensive modifications or signs of abuse. A well-maintained V6 or GT model represents a good value, while the Shelby GT500 is a thrilling but potentially costly option for serious performance enthusiasts.

Fun Car, Some Issues

The Mustang is a blast to drive, especially the V8. However, the interior feels a little dated and the gas mileage isn't great. Reliability has been okay, but I've had a few minor repairs.

Great Value for the Performance

I love my Mustang! It's stylish, powerful, and surprisingly affordable for what you get. The backseat is a bit cramped, but I don't usually have passengers back there anyway.

Solid Muscle Car

This Mustang is a classic. Good power, decent handling, and a timeless design. The technology is a bit behind modern cars, but it's still a great driving experience.

Reliable and Fun Daily Driver

I use my Mustang as my daily driver and it's been very reliable. It's fun to drive on the weekends and practical enough for everyday use. The visibility could be better, though.

Minor Issues, Still a Great Car

I've had a few minor issues with the car, like the radio cutting out occasionally, but overall it's been a great car. The performance is excellent and it's a real head-turner.

Love the Styling

I bought this Mustang mainly for its looks and I haven't been disappointed. It's a beautiful car. The engine is powerful enough for me, and the interior is comfortable. Wish it had better MPG.

Not the Best Build Quality

The car is fast and fun, but the build quality isn't the greatest. I've noticed some rattles and the paint seems a bit thin. Still, it's a great value for the price.

Perfect First Car

This was my first car, and I loved it! It was fun to drive and looked great. Easy to maintain and relatively inexpensive to insure. I eventually upgraded, but I still miss it.

Good Performance for the Price

The Mustang offers a lot of performance for the money. The V6 is surprisingly quick, and the V8 is a beast. The interior is a bit basic, but it's functional.

Interior Could Be Better

My biggest complaint is the interior. It feels cheap and plasticky. The exterior is gorgeous, and the car drives well, but the interior lets it down.
