2009 Ford Mustang Review: Reliable Year For An Affordable Long Lasting Sports Car

Rating: 4.36
Based on 84 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Ford Mustang is a continuation of the fifth generation, known for its retro styling cues harking back to the classic Mustangs of the 1960s. It's available as a coupe and convertible. Key trims included the base V6, GT, and the Shelby GT500. Pricing ranged from around $20,000 to over $40,000 when new. Its blend of iconic design, accessible performance, and relative affordability made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2009 Mustang offers a strong blend of performance with powerful V6 and V8 engine options, appealing to enthusiasts. Its retro design evokes nostalgia. While not the most efficient, the V6 provides reasonable fuel economy. It presents good value for the price and decent reliability, making it both emotionally satisfying and practically justifiable.

The Bad

The 2009 Mustang's interior uses some low-quality plastics. The solid rear axle can make the ride a bit rough on uneven surfaces. Some owners have reported issues with paint quality and premature wear. Watch out for potential rust, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2009 Ford Mustang Have?

The 2009 Ford Mustang has some frequently reported problems. Paint quality can be an issue, with some owners reporting premature chipping or fading. The interior, while stylish, uses lower-quality plastics that can scratch or break over time. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, specifically with rough shifting or slipping.
There have been recalls related to airbag deployment and fuel tank issues in some Mustangs, so it's important to check the VIN for recall status.
Long-term reliability can be affected by rust, especially in areas that use road salt. Suspension components, particularly the rear solid axle, can wear out over time, leading to a less comfortable ride. Electrical issues, while not widespread, have been reported, including problems with the radio or power windows. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these concerns and ensure long-term reliability.

How long will the 2009 Ford Mustang last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Ford Mustang can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15+ years of service. Longevity hinges on regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor issues promptly. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, suspension wear (especially in the rear), and potential electrical gremlins. The V6 engine is generally considered very durable, while the V8 requires a bit more care. Proper care and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing its lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
I've owned this Mustang for several years and it's been a blast. The V6 engine is surprisingly peppy and gets decent gas mileage. The styling still turns heads, and it's a comfortable cruiser. A great value for the money.
David L.
I love the classic Mustang look, and the 2009 model still has it. The performance is good, especially with the V8. The ride can be a little stiff, but that's to be expected with a sports car. I would recommend.
Emily K.
We bought this for my son's first car. It's sporty but safe. We got the V6 for better gas mileage. It's been reliable so far, and he loves driving it. Easy to maintain and find parts for.
Negative Owner Reviews
Sarah M.
The Mustang is a mechanically solid car. I haven't had any major issues with it. My biggest complaint is the interior. It feels a little cheap and outdated compared to newer cars. But overall, it's been a good car.
Jessica P.
While the Mustang is iconic, the 2009 model lacks some of the modern features and refinement of newer cars. The handling could be better, and the interior materials feel a bit dated. It's still a fun car, but not perfect.
Karen W.
I live in an area with harsh winters, and the Mustang isn't ideal for those conditions. It can be challenging to drive in snow and ice. I recommend winter tires if you live in a cold climate. Otherwise, I like the car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Ford Mustang's built-in tech was relatively basic for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered options such as a Shaker 500 or Shaker 1000 audio system with a six-disc CD changer. Navigation was not a common feature for this model year.
Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control. Stability control (AdvanceTrac) was available as an option.
Safety features included front airbags, side airbags, and anti-theft systems.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally showed good performance, with four or five stars in most categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2009 Mustang good ratings in frontal offset and side-impact crash tests. Optional features included remote keyless entry and power accessories. Overall, the tech and safety features were adequate for the time, but not advanced by modern standards. The focus was more on performance and style than cutting-edge technology.

2009 Ford Mustang Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Ford Mustang ranged from around $20,000 for a base V6 coupe to over $40,000 for a Shelby GT500. Currently, used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim. Expect to find V6 models in decent condition for around $5,000-$10,000, GT models for $8,000-$15,000, and Shelby GT500s for $25,000 and up. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, accident history, and whether it's a desirable trim like the GT or Shelby. Mustangs generally depreciate at a moderate rate, but well-maintained examples, especially GTs, hold their value relatively well.

2009 Ford Mustang Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 Mustang are moderate, varying with the driver's history and coverage. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the V6 is reasonably economical, while the V8 GT consumes more. Maintenance is generally affordable, with readily available parts. Repairs can be more expensive for the GT and Shelby GT500 due to their performance components. Overall, the V6 Mustang is relatively economical to own, while the GT and Shelby GT500 are more costly due to fuel consumption and potential repair bills.

2009 Ford Mustang Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Ford Mustang is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Ford Mustang Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2009 Ford Mustang competed with vehicles like the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro (which was relaunched as a 2010 model). In terms of performance, the Mustang GT offered comparable power to the Challenger's V8 options, though the Challenger often had a slight edge in straight-line acceleration. The Camaro, upon its relaunch, presented a more modern interior and independent rear suspension, giving it a handling advantage over the Mustang's solid rear axle.
In terms of features, the Mustang offered a decent array, but its interior materials and technology were less refined than the Camaro. Reliability is generally comparable across these models, with each having its own set of potential issues. Price-wise, the Mustang was often more affordable than the Challenger and Camaro.
Alternatives to consider would be the 2010+ Chevrolet Camaro for better handling and a more modern interior, or the Dodge Challenger for a more spacious interior and retro styling. The Nissan 370Z could also be considered for a sportier driving experience, though at the expense of practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Ford Mustang a Good Coupe?

The 2009 Ford Mustang is ideal for those seeking an affordable and stylish muscle car with a touch of retro charm. It's a good buy, especially on the used market, if you're looking for performance without breaking the bank. The V6 model is a practical choice for daily driving, while the GT offers more thrills. It's worth buying if you prioritize looks and performance over cutting-edge technology and a refined interior. Buying used is recommended, as depreciation has already occurred. Prioritize well-maintained examples with a clean title and service history, and consider a pre-purchase inspection to avoid potential issues.

Fun and Affordable Muscle Car

I've owned this Mustang for several years and it's been a blast. The V6 engine is surprisingly peppy and gets decent gas mileage. The styling still turns heads, and it's a comfortable cruiser. A great value for the money.

Reliable but Dated Interior

The Mustang is a mechanically solid car. I haven't had any major issues with it. My biggest complaint is the interior. It feels a little cheap and outdated compared to newer cars. But overall, it's been a good car.

Still a Head-Turner!

I love the classic Mustang look, and the 2009 model still has it. The performance is good, especially with the V8. The ride can be a little stiff, but that's to be expected with a sports car. I would recommend.

Good First Car for a Teen

We bought this for my son's first car. It's sporty but safe. We got the V6 for better gas mileage. It's been reliable so far, and he loves driving it. Easy to maintain and find parts for.

Minor Issues, But Still Enjoyable

I've had a few minor issues with sensors and electrical components, but nothing major. The car is fun to drive and gets a lot of attention. The trunk space is surprisingly decent. Happy with my purchase.

Not as Refined as Newer Models

While the Mustang is iconic, the 2009 model lacks some of the modern features and refinement of newer cars. The handling could be better, and the interior materials feel a bit dated. It's still a fun car, but not perfect.

Great Performance for the Price

The 2009 Mustang GT offers impressive performance for the price. The V8 engine sounds great and provides plenty of power. The car handles well and is a blast to drive. A true American muscle car.

Practical and Fun Daily Driver

I use my Mustang as my daily driver, and it's been a good choice. It's comfortable enough for commuting and fun to drive on the weekends. The fuel economy is reasonable for a car of this type.

A Few Quirks, But Overall Good

There are a few quirks with the car, like the sometimes finicky radio and the occasionally rough shifting. But overall, it's a reliable and enjoyable car to own. The aftermarket support is excellent.

Not the Best for Winter Driving

I live in an area with harsh winters, and the Mustang isn't ideal for those conditions. It can be challenging to drive in snow and ice. I recommend winter tires if you live in a cold climate. Otherwise, I like the car.
