What Problems Does the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Have?

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, while generally reliable, has faced some reported issues. One common concern revolves around the 2.0L turbocharged engine's Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT). Some owners have experienced jerky shifting or hesitation, particularly at lower speeds. Although not a widespread problem, it's worth investigating before purchasing. Hyundai issued some recalls that may affect the 2020 Santa Fe, including recalls related to potential engine fires and brake system issues; checking the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database is crucial to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns often center around electronic components and sensors. Some owners have reported glitches with the infotainment system and driver-assistance features. Regular maintenance, particularly fluid changes for the DCT and engine, is vital to mitigating these potential issues. It's advised to get a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic to assess the vehicle's overall condition and identify any existing problems before making a purchase. Early model years of the Santa Fe (prior to 2019) had some engine issues, so be sure to focus on issues specific to the 2020 model.

How long will the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe last?

With proper maintenance, the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-12 years for the average driver. Long-term durability largely depends on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule. Weaknesses over time may include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for increased oil consumption in the 2.4L engine, and the aforementioned DCT issues in turbocharged models. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are essential for maximizing its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe boasts a solid suite of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. The available Harman Kardon premium audio system provides excellent sound quality.

Driver-assistance features are comprehensive, with standard Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Driver Attention Warning. Higher trims add Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and a Blind View Monitor.

Safety features include multiple airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control. Optional features include a Surround View Monitor and a Head-Up Display.

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe earned excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating, demonstrating its commitment to occupant protection. The specific ratings vary slightly depending on the model year's testing methodology, but generally, the Santa Fe performed well in all crashworthiness evaluations.

2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe had an MSRP ranging from approximately $26,000 for the base SE trim to around $40,000 for the fully loaded Ultimate trim. Current used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $30,000, depending on trim, mileage, and condition. The Santa Fe experiences average depreciation for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level. Well-maintained vehicles with lower mileage and desirable features (like the turbocharged engine and leather interior) generally command higher resale prices. Color can also play a minor role.

2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class. Routine maintenance is affordable, with regular oil changes and tire rotations being the most common services. Repair costs can be higher if the DCT transmission or electronic components require attention. Overall, long-term ownership costs are reasonable compared to other SUVs in its segment, making it a cost-effective choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Santa Fe's base engine is adequate, but the turbocharged option is preferable, though the CR-V's turbo engine is arguably more refined. Feature-wise, the Santa Fe often offers more standard and available features for the price compared to the CR-V and RAV4. Reliability is generally comparable to the Rogue and Escape, but the CR-V and RAV4 have traditionally held a slight edge. Price is where the Santa Fe truly shines, often undercutting its rivals, providing a significant value proposition.

Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V, which offers slightly better reliability and a more refined driving experience, albeit at a higher price. The Toyota RAV4 is another solid choice for reliability and fuel efficiency. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more sporty driving experience. If budget is a primary concern, the Nissan Rogue is another comparable option. Overall, the Santa Fe offers a good balance of features, price, and comfort, making it a compelling choice within the mid-size SUV segment. Consider the Mazda CX-5 for a sportier experience and the Toyota RAV4 for greater reliability at a slightly higher price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe a Good Wagon?

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe is ideal for families and individuals seeking a comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped SUV at a reasonable price. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, for its value and features. Consider the SEL or Limited trims for the best balance of features and affordability. The turbocharged engine is recommended for those who prioritize performance. Be sure to check for any outstanding recalls and thoroughly inspect the vehicle, particularly the transmission on turbocharged models, before purchasing. If reliability is a top priority and budget isn't a major concern, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 might be better alternatives.

Lots of room. Good on Gas

The trunk gets stuck it closed on my fingers. The gas mileage is great and it's never ran out on gas on me before and the GPS system could use a little work but all in all a good car if you have 2 kiddos.

Try Tameron Hyundai in Hoover, AL

Citron at Tameron Hyundai is absolutely AMAZING &I love this car! I have nothing but great things to say about my experience at Tameron Hyundai. The dealership in and of itself was very attentive & welcoming, and Citron specifically was one of the best sales representatives that I have ever dealt with, & I have purchased several cars in the past. Whenever I need another car this will be the first place that I look & I'm also sending any friends or family! Go ahead & check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Perfect SUV for small families.

Bought new in Jan, 2020. Great, large SUV. Quiet, comfortable, economical, reliable. With the 2.4 this SUV can cruise all day at 80-90MPH. Loaded with safety and comfort features. If it came with a 3rd row seat and AWD, we would still have this fine automobile. Alas, ours didn't. My bad. Performed flawlessly in the 2 years we owned it. Very highly recommended.

A new convert

I have always owned (and still do) Hondas and Subarus. When I looked at purchasing a midsized crossover, I tried both the Subaru Ascent and Honda CRV. both were just okay. When I hesitantly tried the Hyundai Santa Fe I was impressed beyond belief. I rolled the dice on Hyundai and have been so pleased with this vehicle.

Had to buy this vehicle

A lot more car than competitive cars. The styling and interior are better than luxury brands. My SEL with premium and convenience packages is MUCH more impressive than the luxury brands. The warranty is the best available in the industry.

Love the Santa Fe

We needed a new car to travel in as our old one was beating me to death on the road. The Santa Fe has every bell and whistle that I need and some I didn't know I needed but love. My only complaint is it only has 2 cup holders in the front. I know, first world problem. I never could have a car with a sun roof as the head room was too low for my husband but I finally got my sun roof with this one!!!!
