The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size crossover SUV, representing the fourth generation of the popular Santa Fe line. Key trims included SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy. Known for its bold styling, spacious interior, and impressive value proposition, the 2021 Santa Fe offers a compelling blend of features and affordability. The pricing ranged approximately from $27,000 to $40,000 when new, making it accessible to a wide range of buyers. It stands out with its distinctive grille design and available hybrid powertrain.
The Good

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe boasts a comfortable ride, stylish design, and a user-friendly infotainment system appealing emotionally. Practically, it offers good fuel efficiency with its available hybrid powertrain, strong safety ratings, and a generous warranty. Its value proposition makes it an attractive choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a well-equipped SUV, along with its reported average reliability.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Have?

Some 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe owners have reported issues related to the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), particularly in models equipped with the 2.5L turbo engine. These issues often manifest as jerky or hesitant shifting, especially at lower speeds. Software updates have been released to address these problems, but some owners continue to experience them.

Another commonly cited issue involves the infotainment system. Some users have reported glitches, freezing, and connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

While Hyundai's warranty is generally excellent, addressing these issues can be time-consuming and frustrating for owners. Recalls have been issued for certain Hyundai models due to potential fire risks, and while the 2021 Santa Fe itself hasn't had widespread fire-related recalls, it's essential to check for any safety recalls specific to your vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website. Long-term reliability concerns are primarily focused on the DCT and electronic components, so proactive maintenance and monitoring are crucial for preserving the vehicle's overall lifespan. Some model years have had slightly higher complaint volumes related to specific features, further reinforcing the importance of thorough research before purchasing.

How long will the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe last?

With proper maintenance, the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Adhering to Hyundai's recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely servicing of the DCT (if equipped), is crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by the DCT's reliability, as well as potential wear and tear on suspension components and electronic systems. Rust-proofing in regions with harsh winters can extend the body's lifespan. The engine itself is generally considered robust if maintained well. Monitor for oil consumption as the vehicle ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Higher trims offer a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation. A premium Harman Kardon sound system is available for enhanced audio quality.

Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and driver attention warning. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a blind-spot view monitor, and a surround-view monitor for enhanced situational awareness.

Safety features encompass a suite of airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes.

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" designation. These impressive safety ratings reinforce the Santa Fe's commitment to occupant protection. Optional features such as Highway Driving Assist add to the vehicle's safety and convenience during longer drives by combining adaptive cruise control with lane centering.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe ranged from approximately $27,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $20,000 to $30,000, reflecting typical depreciation for a vehicle of this age. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, trim level (higher trims retain value better), accident history, and the presence of desirable options packages. Santa Fe's generally depreciate at an average rate for their class.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe typically has average insurance costs compared to other mid-size SUVs. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the hybrid option. Maintenance costs are generally moderate, though potential DCT issues could lead to higher repair bills. Overall, the Santa Fe offers a relatively economical ownership experience, particularly when factoring in Hyundai's strong warranty. However, budgeting for potential repairs, especially related to the transmission or infotainment system, is advisable. Routine maintenance is crucial to mitigate higher repair costs later.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of price, the Santa Fe is generally competitively priced, often offering more features for the money compared to the RAV4 and CR-V. Performance-wise, the turbo engine option provides a noticeable boost over the base engines in some competitors. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience, while the RAV4 is known for its strong reliability reputation.

Feature-wise, the Santa Fe offers a well-rounded package, especially in higher trims. Its infotainment system, while sometimes glitchy, is generally user-friendly. Reliability is a mixed bag; while not as consistently reliable as the RAV4 or CR-V, it is on par or better than the Rogue.

Alternatives worth considering include the Kia Sorento (which shares a platform with the Santa Fe but offers a third row), the Subaru Outback (for its standard AWD and rugged appeal), and the aforementioned Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V (for their reliability). The Mazda CX-5 is for those prioritizing driving dynamics. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities, but the Santa Fe offers a compelling blend of value and features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe a Good Vehicle?

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe is a good choice for families and individuals seeking a stylish, well-equipped, and spacious mid-size SUV at a competitive price. It's particularly suitable for those who appreciate modern technology and a comfortable ride. It is worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, provided a thorough inspection is performed. I recommend considering the SEL or Limited trims for the best balance of features and value. Be mindful of potential DCT issues, especially with the turbo engine, and ensure all recalls have been addressed. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is crucial, particularly checking the transmission. The hybrid model is a great option if fuel economy is a top priority. Buying a certified pre-owned (CPO) model may provide added peace of mind with an extended warranty.

Amazing SUV

When shopping for our Santa Fe, we looked at many different models brands and sizes some smaller some larger and felt very comfortable with the size of this vehicle. The interior is beautiful and lacks the big TV screen that many of the SUVs have that I didn't care for. After driving it, I was impressed with its cornering handling breaking an overall driving position. I now have 15,000 miles on it and I'm totally impressed with its comfort and all of the safety features. Some of the smaller SUVs we drove were noisy, and I felt every bump on the road, some of the larger SUVs were just too big. I was impressed with how quiet this car was and how it smoothed out lot of the rough roads that we have here in California. We have the SEL model with a 2.5 L turbo charged engine that has plenty of power and decent fuel economy. I get over 30 miles per gallon on the highway and 25 miles per gallon in town. This is an amazing vehicle that drove nicer both in town and freeway than many other SUVs costing thousand more.

Clement Hyundai/ Never again.

Before he died my husband wanted me to have a safe reliable vehicle. Since his death I've had to deal with three recalls. Two of those breakdowns occurred as I was on the interstate, frightened. This last recall, breakdown was transmission. My car was in their service department 44 days. I don't know what's next.

Heaven on four wheels!

I was the first one in America to own the 2021 Santa Fe limited, or any 2021 SF actually! I've never owned a Hyundai but I am loving this vehicle! I have Stormy Seas with the leather trim interior. Every feature possible in this baby Palisade, I can tell you it has features I thought I'd never use in AZ and I've used them all from parking assist to heated steering wheel and cooled and heated seats! The window shades in the rear windows help in 115* heat. I love the cameras and everything that came with it. I love to open the roof and let the sun in without getting blown all over the place.

Rough shifting

Having concerns with the transmission and its rough shifting. Rest of SUV is great. Gas mileage is around 28 to 31 mpg and radio is terrific. Interior is comfortable and all controls are easy to reach. Don't. Care that the default for engine shutoff at stop requires attention everytime you start car as does the radio display. Could be worse!

Great Mid-sized SUV

Bought my Santa Fe with SEL trim level in May 2021. After 16,000 miles I have had no problems and have enjoyed the quiet, smooth ride. Lots of space and great gas mileage (average slightly over 30 mpg, mix of city and highway. Love all of the safety features and the long warranty. The AEB system helped me to avoid a collision when a driver pulled directly in front of me from a side road. Brakes activated before my foot hit the brake pedal. My only knock is the somewhat slow acceleration in Normal or Economy mode, but the Sport mode does fine.

21 Santa Fe just rolled away as I was walking to s

Yes! 2021 Santa Fe just moved from parked reverse as I was walking away it had my friend and my son and toe who were screaming their heads up and the car slammed into a flagpole I tried to hop in and save it but I didn't make it in time. My Honda and the insurance agency have denied the claim. Technically no one was even in when the car slammed into the pole. So if the vacant seats fault that the car rolled away. This vehicle even supposedly has features that s*** the car in the park whenever the driver opens the door. The technician at my Hyundai and told us that would be no codes that to show up cuz this is something that would only happen one in a thousand. He then proceeded to show us how the car will go to park when you open the door and even if you press over while the door is open it still will not go into reverse it's just shifts back in the park. Apparently my 5 year old is lying when he tells you that the car rolled away Mommy as she was walking away. Thank goodness I didn't walk behind the car. Or it roll into the restaurant, oncoming traffic, off a cliff!! I immediately contacted my Hyundai and assumed that they would want to address the issue. Nope they have slept it under the rug and they are refusing responsibility I'm at a loss of what to do Surely more 21 Santa Few will experience this problem and unfortunately it's probably going to take a death or two before they actually recognize it.

push button shifter malfunction

I now have 3000 miles on my new sante fe. The push button shifter has been nothing but a problem. It has not allowed me to shift at all three times. The dealer kept it three days but said they could not find anything wrong with it. Said I had to bring it in while it was doing it,duh if it's doing it I cant move it. Really disappointed with this push button shifter and disappointed that it cant be fixed.

Good Choice

It has all of the things that one would want in a vehicle. I have not owned it long enough to come up with twenty five words so that is the best I can say at this point.
