The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class represents a cornerstone of the brand's commitment to luxury and innovation. As part of the W212 generation (2009-2016), it's available in sedan, coupe, wagon, and convertible body styles. Key trims include the E350, E550, and high-performance E63 AMG. Known for its elegant design, advanced technology, and comfortable ride, the E-Class offers a premium driving experience. Original pricing ranged approximately from $50,000 to over $90,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2013 E-Class boasts a smooth, powerful engine, offering a luxurious and comfortable ride. Its elegant design provides a sense of prestige and style. For practical buyers, it provides decent fuel efficiency for its class, while its reputation for safety provides peace of mind. While not known for incredible reliability, proper maintenance keeps it running smoothly.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2013 E-Class include higher maintenance costs than some competitors, particularly concerning its complex electronics and air suspension (if equipped). Some owners report issues with the COMAND system and certain sensors. Keep an eye out for oil leaks and suspension wear. Pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

What Problems Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Have?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Issues with the COMAND infotainment system, including screen malfunctions and software glitches, are relatively common. Some owners have reported problems with the air suspension (on models equipped with it), leading to costly repairs. Oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing, are also potential concerns.

Electrical issues, such as problems with sensors (e.g., parking sensors, oxygen sensors), can occur. Premature wear of brake components, especially on performance-oriented models like the E63 AMG, is something to consider. Some owners have also mentioned problems with the fuel injectors. Recalls related to fuel systems, airbags, and other safety components might have been issued; it's crucial to check the VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be influenced by adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule and the quality of replacement parts used. Keeping an eye on the car's service history is essential.

How long will the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10+ years of service. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing repairs promptly. Weaknesses that may surface over time include suspension component wear (especially on models with air suspension), potential issues with the electrical system, and the gradual degradation of rubber components like hoses and seals. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the car's lifespan and minimizing expensive repairs.

Negative Owner Reviews
Beach chick
This car has vinyl seats that are notorious for splitting at the seams on seats. The volume control button on steering wheel is a plastic sticker that is peeling off & will cost $600 to repair. Plastic ?wood ? grain trim gas faded , leaving white spots throughout. Lacks many features that my 1998 E320 had.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class features a COMAND infotainment system with a central display screen, a rotary controller, and standard features like Bluetooth connectivity, a CD player, and an auxiliary input. Optional tech includes navigation, a Harman Kardon sound system, and smartphone integration.

Driver-assistance features include standard features like stability control, antilock brakes, and multiple airbags. Optional features available include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and parking sensors with a rearview camera. Safety features such as Pre-Safe (prepares the car for an imminent collision) are also included.

The 2013 E-Class earned high crash-test ratings from both the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA. The IIHS gave it a "Top Safety Pick" award. The NHTSA awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. These ratings reflect the car's robust structure and comprehensive safety features. Availability of specific features depended on the trim level and options packages selected when the car was new. For example, the Driver Assistance Package added many of the advanced safety technologies mentioned above.

2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class ranged from around $50,000 for the base E350 to over $90,000 for the E63 AMG. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The E-Class has depreciated significantly, as expected for a luxury vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has desirable options. Lower mileage examples with documented maintenance records command higher prices. The AMG models tend to hold their value better than the base models.

2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is generally considered more costly than owning a non-luxury vehicle. Insurance premiums tend to be higher, and fuel costs can be significant, especially for the V8 models. Maintenance and repair costs are also higher due to the complexity of the car and the need for specialized parts and labor. While the diesel E250 BlueTEC offers better fuel economy, overall, the E-Class is not the most economical vehicle to own. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable.

How Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class competes with the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Lexus GS, and Cadillac CTS. In terms of performance, the E-Class offers a range of powerful engines, but the BMW 5 Series often is considered slightly more engaging to drive. The Audi A6 provides a similar level of luxury and technology, and its quattro all-wheel-drive system gives it an edge in inclement weather. The Lexus GS is renowned for its reliability, surpassing the E-Class in this area. The Cadillac CTS offers a more aggressive design and sporty handling.

Regarding features, all these cars offer comparable levels of luxury and technology, although the specific features available may vary. Price-wise, the E-Class is generally competitive with its German rivals, but the Lexus GS often offers better value.

Alternatives to the E-Class include the Lexus GS for those prioritizing reliability, the BMW 5 Series for driving enthusiasts, and the Audi A6 for its blend of luxury, technology, and all-weather capability. Each car offers a slightly different flavor within the luxury mid-size sedan segment.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a good choice for buyers seeking a comfortable, luxurious, and technologically advanced mid-size sedan, coupe, wagon, or convertible. It's ideal for those who appreciate the Mercedes-Benz brand image and are willing to pay for the associated maintenance costs. A used 2013 E-Class can be a worthwhile purchase, especially if it has been well-maintained and has a comprehensive service history. Getting a pre-purchase inspection is essential, particularly to check for potential issues with the air suspension and electronics.

not a car for "old men"

OK, it's the E550... plenty of HP under the hood, so that there's no situation where you wished you could accelerate faster. Very silent / noiseless from the inside. It's a wolf in a sheepskin. Easily underestimated on first- and second view.

Will forever drive the E class.

The E class is a baby S class without the price tag. But better. Strong engine. Will last forever. I currently have 2. Depending on my outfit determines which E I’m driving that day. Don’t judge me.
