The 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class marked Mercedes' entry into the full-size, luxury SUV segment. It's a seven-passenger SUV with a unibody construction, offered from 2007 to 2012 in its first generation. Key trims included the GL450 and GL320 CDI (diesel). New, the GL-Class ranged from approximately $55,000 to $70,000+. It stood out for its luxurious interior, comfortable ride, and genuine off-road capability combined with Mercedes-Benz refinement.
The Good

The 2007 GL-Class offered a comfortable and spacious ride, appealing to families. Its robust V8 engine (GL450) delivered confident performance, appealing to those seeking power. The luxurious interior and prestigious badge provided emotional appeal. Practical buyers appreciated the three-row seating, available 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and towing capability. The diesel version (GL320 CDI) also offered better fuel efficiency, further enhancing its practicality.

The Bad

The 2007 GL-Class is known for potential air suspension issues, which can be costly to repair. Oil leaks, particularly from the engine and transmission, are also common concerns. Electronic glitches, including issues with the navigation system and other onboard systems, are frequently reported. High maintenance costs associated with a luxury SUV are also a factor to consider.

What Problems Does the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class has several frequently reported problems. Air suspension failure is a common and expensive issue, with components like air struts and the compressor prone to malfunction. Oil leaks from various engine and transmission seals are also frequently reported. Electronic issues, including problems with the COMAND system (navigation, audio, and climate control), and malfunctions with sensors (e.g., parking sensors) are also noted. There were recalls related to fuel filter flange cracking, which could cause fuel leakage, and potential issues with the power steering system. Long-term reliability concerns center around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The air suspension is a recurring headache, and the diesel engine (GL320 CDI) can experience issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and turbocharger. The transfer case can also develop problems over time. Regular maintenance is crucial, but even with careful upkeep, the GL-Class can be a costly vehicle to maintain as it ages, particularly beyond 100,000 miles. Issues tend to be consistent across the 2007-2009 model years.

How long will the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

A well-maintained 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Many examples are still on the road after 15+ years, but deferred maintenance can significantly shorten their lifespan. The air suspension system, as mentioned, is a common weak point that requires attention. Regular oil changes and transmission services are crucial. Over time, rubber components (hoses, bushings) will degrade, requiring replacement. The complexity of the vehicle means that even minor repairs can be expensive, impacting long-term ownership costs and potentially leading to premature disposal if maintenance is neglected.

Suncity
Great Mercedes-Benz suv looks like a $30,000 car, safe and fun to drive it. The sound system is very good in my car. The leather inside and the paint is like new.
Sports Fan
It is the best cars I have ever owned. When I set in the drivers seat I feel like the road is mine. Same way when I go into the turns it goes thru them like nothing.
Systems3
This is excellent in term of performance and gas mileage. This is the diesel type. Great on gas. Averages over 20mpg. With regular oil changes there is little to worry about. Sensors are sometimes temperamental and they fault easily. Nice sound system. Takes time to get used to all the different gadgets and instruments. With patience you are good to go. Seats are plush leather. Dual sunroof/moonroof makes it fashionable and enjoyable. Overall, I am pleased with it.
Negative Owner Reviews

TOO MANY MINOR DEFECTS, NOT HANDLING WELL ON WET AND RAINING CONDITION, CARGO IS TOO SMALL (MAKE THE SUV BIGGER), GPS CONTROL IS THE WORST (SHOULD LOOK LIKE C-CLASS),I ALSO HAVE A C300.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class came equipped with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-adjustable front seats. The COMAND system integrated audio, navigation (optional), and climate controls, though it could be complex to use. Available entertainment features included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with screens mounted in the headrests.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern cars, but it did offer features like parking sensors and optional adaptive cruise control.

Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) varied depending on the specific test, but the GL-Class generally performed well in crash tests. However, it's important to note that safety standards have evolved considerably since 2007, so its performance may not be directly comparable to newer vehicles. Optional features also include the TeleAid emergency system.

2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class ranged from approximately $55,000 to $70,000+, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. This represents significant depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, overall condition (especially the air suspension), maintenance history, and location. Models with documented service records and in good mechanical condition command higher prices. High mileage examples or those with known issues (e.g., failing air suspension) will sell for considerably less. The GL-Class depreciated quickly due to its higher maintenance costs and complex systems.

2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally considered a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its luxury status and higher repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, particularly for the GL450. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially concerning the air suspension and other complex systems. Long-term ownership requires a dedicated budget for potential repairs. It is not an economical choice compared to mainstream SUVs; expect to spend significantly more on upkeep.

2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competed with SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX 470. In terms of performance, the GL450 was competitive with the Escalade's V8, but the Escalade offered a bolder style. The Navigator provided similar space but often lacked the GL's handling refinement. The Lexus LX 470 (and later LX 570) was known for superior reliability but offered a less modern interior.

Feature-wise, the GL-Class was generally well-equipped, but rivals often had unique features or more advanced technology at the time.

Reliability is where the GL-Class lagged behind, particularly compared to the Lexus. The Escalade also had its own reliability quirks.

Price-wise (used), the GL-Class can be attractive due to depreciation, but potential repair costs must be considered.

Alternatives to consider include the Acura MDX (for better reliability and lower running costs, but less space), or a newer, non-luxury SUV like the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander if practicality and reliability are paramount. If luxury is a must, consider a newer Lexus GX or LX model for improved reliability, though at a higher price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious, three-row SUV at a lower price point on the used market. However, it's essential to be aware of the potential for costly repairs. It's worth buying *only* if you're prepared for higher-than-average maintenance costs and can thoroughly inspect the vehicle beforehand. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is crucial, paying close attention to the air suspension, engine, and transmission. The diesel (GL320 CDI) might offer slightly better fuel economy, but also introduces potential diesel-specific issues. It's best suited for mechanically inclined individuals or those with a trusted mechanic familiar with Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Don't buy without a comprehensive inspection and a realistic budget for potential repairs.

Extremely reliable

I am an Auto Dealer in So.Oregon and the Mrs. has had hers since 2008 with 20k miles on it. I regularly do my own maint. on the Beast such as Plugs , Air filters, Cabin Air filters, ect...... There is misconception about Expensive Repairs on them, Just like every relationship you must maintain them otherwise they will cost You dearly. Parts are just as comparable to any import. Our MBZ 450GL has almost 200k only thing I had to do and that is Today replace Water Pump and a couple window switches keep coming off but truly a sound vehicle all & all.

Worst used car to purchase

This vehicle is horrible it shouldn?t be allowed on the used car market Mercedes knows there is an issue with the transmission and refuses to do the recall so you are guaranteed to put a few thousand in that issue alone and the dealers are all aware of it

Great vehicle for road trips

I drove my 2007 GL450 drove all the way from Seattle to Michigan with my wife through some very bad snowstorms. Thank God, we arrived OK. It was unnerving at times, and I was worried about how the car would perform. Thankfully, it didn't break down. I used to own a 2001 ML320 (W163) that I took to 240,000 miles before giving to another family member that's still using it as a daily driver. I'm hoping this GL can also achieve such longevity. The leather seats are very comfortable for long journeys. One finicky thing is the Keyless Go. I just cannot get it to work on the driver's side. The passenger side works fine.

BEST CAR I HAVE OWNED

The Vehicle came with lots of options fully loaded and the DVD on the headrests. SO far this vehicle is equipped with nice seating, a fully functional interior room with everything you need from Cooling to entertaining yourself and the kids. Enough room for 7 passengers and also for your equipment or luggage. It is nicely designed and all of the features in the vehicle make it really desirable. It rides perfectly with its strong V8 engine this vehicle has all the power you need to see you flying.
