What Problems Does the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, while luxurious, has some frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Air suspension is a common trouble area; issues can range from leaking air struts to compressor failures, leading to expensive repairs. Oil leaks, particularly from the oil cooler and valve cover gaskets, are also frequently reported. Electrical problems, including issues with the navigation system, power windows, and other electronic components, are not uncommon. The diesel GL320/350 models can experience problems with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and other emissions-related components.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date information. Some common recall areas for this generation of GL-Class vehicles have included fuel filter flange issues, potentially leading to fuel leaks and fire risk. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle's systems. Regular maintenance, using quality parts, and addressing issues promptly are crucial to extending the vehicle's lifespan. Models with higher mileage are more likely to experience these issues. It is highly recommended to get a pre-purchase inspection before purchasing a used GL-Class.

How long will the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can reach 200,000 miles or more. However, its longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Given their age, most 2009 GL-Class models have accumulated significant mileage. The air suspension system is a significant weak point, often requiring costly repairs over time. Oil leaks are also common as the engine ages. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and attention to cooling system maintenance are essential for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Ignoring these issues can lead to premature component failure and significantly reduce the vehicle's usability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class boasts a range of built-in tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Standard features include the COMAND system with a central display screen, a 6-disc CD changer, Bluetooth connectivity (optional in some earlier models), and dual-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims and optional packages added features like a navigation system, a Harman Kardon sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system with DVD player, and a rearview camera.

Driver-assistance features were less sophisticated than today's standards but included standard cruise control and optional parking sensors. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control, and a full complement of airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning, which were advanced for the time. In terms of crash-test ratings, the 2009 GL-Class performed well in government and insurance industry tests. The NHTSA awarded it four stars for frontal crash protection and five stars for side-impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in its frontal offset and side impact crash tests. These ratings, while good for the time, should be considered relative to newer vehicles with more advanced safety technologies.

2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class ranged from approximately $57,000 for the GL320 BlueTec to $85,000 for the GL550. As a used vehicle, prices vary greatly based on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find them in the range of $8,000 to $20,000, potentially even lower for models with high mileage or significant mechanical issues. Depreciation is significant for luxury SUVs like the GL-Class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's maintenance history, overall condition, and the presence of desirable options such as the navigation system or rear-seat entertainment. Models with documented service records and in excellent cosmetic condition will command higher prices.

2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, particularly for the air suspension and other complex systems. Parts are generally more expensive than those for non-luxury vehicles. While a well-maintained example can provide years of service, prospective buyers should budget for higher-than-average ownership costs.

2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competed against other luxury SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX, Acura MDX, and Land Rover Range Rover. In terms of performance, the GL450 and GL550 offered competitive power, though the Escalade had a more powerful V8. The GL-Class offered a more refined driving experience than the Escalade but wasn't as off-road capable as the Range Rover. Feature-wise, the GL-Class was well-equipped for its time, but the Lexus LX offered a reputation for superior reliability. The Acura MDX provided a more budget-friendly alternative with good reliability, though it lacked the prestige and some of the luxury features of the GL-Class.

In terms of reliability, the GL-Class generally lags behind the Lexus LX and Acura MDX. Considering used market prices, the Acura MDX is a compelling alternative if reliability and lower running costs are primary concerns. The Lexus LX, while more expensive on the used market, offers greater long-term dependability. If luxury is paramount and budget allows, a newer, well-maintained Acura MDX or Lexus RX might be better choices to avoid the potential maintenance costs associated with an older GL-Class.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers who prioritize luxury, space, and a prestigious brand image, and are comfortable with potentially higher maintenance costs. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and a pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues. Opting for the GL450 might be a good compromise between performance and fuel economy. However, be prepared for potential air suspension repairs and other age-related issues. For buyers seeking greater reliability and lower running costs, alternatives like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX/LX would be more prudent choices.

Love this SUV

I am putting 4 grand into my GL450 to replace brakes and power steering. Car has been awesome once you get a good mechanic. Btw its used so I'm not making payments. $400/month maintenance. Not bad. It goes well but they all need airshocks redone.

Best SUV ever

It has it all. Luxury, astounding diesel MPG (real world 23mpg mixed/30+mpg on the highway) and torque. Three row seating. Video screens DVD for back seat. It has been super reliable and not crazy expensive to maintain. Somehow the 2009 has a look that looks like much later models.

2009 Mercedes GL 450

This is a great family car to drive; it is styled nicely, is very safe and reliable. There are cheaper cars to be had, but the difference is in the value for your money.....and this Mercedes has tremendous value. I was surprised to hear how the engines are designed with more oil and coolant passageways than regular cars - this allows heat to not build up and decrease efficiency.....Very stable on any road or off road terrain.

Comfortable and well appointed

Moving up from a Lexus GX470 so this is bigger. The engine performance and suspension hide the fact that it is bigger and heavier. There's more personality in it's handling, you feel more connected to the road in a good way. The technology on the dash is abundant and it will take a bit to get comfortable with how it all works.
