What Problems Does the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, and spanning across multiple years, include issues with the air suspension system. Components such as the air struts and compressor can fail, leading to expensive repairs. The GL350 BlueTEC models have had recurring issues with the diesel emissions system, particularly the AdBlue tank and sensors, requiring replacements. Electrical glitches, such as malfunctioning sensors, COMAND system failures, and issues with the power liftgate, have also been reported. Some owners have noted oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and the oil cooler. Recalls for the 2015 GL-Class have addressed issues ranging from fuel filter flange leaks to potential brake booster failures and issues with the supplemental restraint system. Long-term reliability concerns center around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. Proper and frequent maintenance is crucial to mitigating these risks, including regular fluid changes and inspections of critical components. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to identify any existing or potential problems.

How long will the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Long-term durability hinges on addressing known weaknesses, especially the air suspension and diesel emissions systems (if applicable). Regular maintenance, including fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) and timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), is critical. Neglecting these can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan and lead to costly repairs down the line. Rust prevention is also important in colder climates.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class comes equipped with a range of built-in tech features. The COMAND infotainment system includes a central display screen, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Standard entertainment features include a premium sound system.
Driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and parking sensors.
Safety features encompass multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control.
Optional features include adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, lane keeping assist, and pre-safe brake which autonomously applies the brakes to reduce the severity of a collision.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show the 2015 GL-Class achieving "Good" ratings in several crashworthiness categories. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. Further safety features, depending on trim and options, were available such as Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control, active blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist, and cross-traffic alert.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class ranged from approximately $64,000 for the GL350 BlueTEC to over $120,000 for the GL63 AMG. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim, typically ranging from $20,000 to $40,000. Depreciation is considerable for luxury SUVs, especially after the first few years. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, maintenance history, condition, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage and a clean maintenance record will command higher prices. The GL63 AMG tends to hold its value better due to its performance and exclusivity.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel economy, especially for the GL550 and GL63 AMG, is poor. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly for the air suspension and diesel emissions systems. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potentially expensive repairs. The GL350 BlueTEC offers slightly better fuel economy, but diesel repairs can be costly. It is not an economical vehicle.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with other luxury SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, and Lexus LX 570. The GL-Class offers a more refined driving experience and a slightly more manageable size compared to the Escalade. The Range Rover provides comparable luxury and off-road capability, but the GL-Class generally has better reliability ratings. The Lexus LX 570 is known for its exceptional reliability but lacks the GL-Class's sporty handling and modern styling.
In terms of performance, the GL63 AMG outshines many competitors. However, its fuel economy is the worst in its class. For features, the GL-Class offers a competitive suite of technology and safety options.
The Acura MDX is a similar but more reliable and affordable alternative if maximum reliability and lower running costs are priorities, but it lacks the GL's outright luxury and prestige. The BMW X5 is another option, offering similar performance and features, but potentially with slightly better handling and a more modern interior. However, the X5's third-row seat is much smaller. Overall, the GL-Class balances luxury, performance, and practicality, though reliability and maintenance costs are areas where rivals may offer an advantage.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious and spacious SUV with seating for seven, offering a blend of comfort, performance, and prestige. It's worth buying if you understand and accept the higher ownership costs associated with a luxury vehicle. Purchasing a used model is generally recommended due to significant depreciation, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential. Opt for a well-maintained GL450 or GL550 for a balance of power and features, or the GL350 BlueTEC if fuel economy is a concern (but be aware of potential diesel-related repairs). Avoid neglecting maintenance, as this can lead to costly repairs. The GL63 AMG is for enthusiasts who prioritize performance over practicality.

There is witchcraft and voodoo in that there SUV

The 2015 GL550 turbo is off the rails. Push the sport mode button and some kind of witchcraft happens. It is a fast, comfortable brute that puts many 2023 SUVs to shame. Highway, no problem, B roads, no problem, snow, no problem, heavy rain, no problem. It does it all. Mine was 110K new. I picked mine up used for 40 with 35K on the clock. I use mine like an SUV. We hunt, fish, and put the dogs in the back. It does it all. Do not take your Merc to the dealer. Some folks specialize in Merc and will do your routine maintenance for thousands less. Yes, thousands less. Some of which you can do yourself. I'm on a Mercedes forum. Folks help you with countless features. The Germans know what they are doing.

SUV to replace my S550 S-Class sedan

Owned a newer 2014 S-Class, but we could never get two golf bags in the trunk. It was a beautiful and lots of technology but needed more cargo volume. Bought a 2015 GL450 pre-owned from the local Mercedes dealership. The newer GLS is more expensive and feels less solidly built and tons of electronics that can go wrong. Overall, I am happy with the comfort and utility of this SUV. We took it on a couple road trips in its first year. I have distronic plus radar cruise control and didn't know that it also helps automatically stop to avoid a collision. Some crazy driver stopped in the middle of a highway trying to get into a left lane and I would have rear ended them if I didn't have the radar with the active brake assist. The comand navigation screen is smaller than on the newer ones and the night time backup view is too dark. I've had some glitchy performance with the Comand system, but it's a 7 year old SUV, but it's somewhat to be expected. Overall, great SUV to live with for at least the next 5-10 years before everything goes electric.

7th Mercedes I've Owned and the Nicest

Perfect car for us. I've owned 6 other Mercedes over the years and this one is the nicest. Bought it for my wife after she's driven Volvos exclusively for the past 25 years. This was a certified pre-owned and in immaculate condition with low miles. Only downside whatsoever the the placement of the hand holds when getting in the car. Personally I would have placed them more forward for ease of getting in.

Most Reliable car

This car met all my needs. Most reliable car. It is solidly built, quiet, and smooth. The ride is like a Rangerover and it handles almost like a sedan. It's just the right size, has very comfortable seats.

I guess I got the lemon.

it is comfortable and joy to drive when it is working well but unfortunately in my case, it is not very reliable. Since the warranty run out there is always something bad happening. The coils (there is 8 of them) started to go. Safety sensors went out. The latest problem is my heating steering wheel giving electric shocks and smokes.

Beautiful and a great luxury

This car went beyond my expectations. It is beautiful and the drive feels like your on a cloud. Great family car with lots of room!! Many extras that were standard and the options were very innovative. Some features like heated and cooling cup holders are an amazement. It is very forward thinking and they work great. If you are thinking of getting a luxury vehicle, this is the one. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Luxury Ride and Huge Cargo Space...

Couldn't ask for a safer car. Tells you when a car is in your blind spot or you shouldn't change lanes. The gas mileage is remarkable for this large of a vehicle 16-22 miles per gallon. Love all the push button ease to drop back seats etc.
