The 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class entered the market as a full-size luxury SUV, offering three rows of seating and impressive capabilities. Its body style is that of a traditional SUV, emphasizing spaciousness and a commanding presence. Model years spanned from 2007 to 2012 for this generation. Key trims included the GL450 and GL550. Pricing ranged from approximately $55,000 to $75,000 when new. It stood out for its blend of Mercedes-Benz luxury, passenger capacity, and surprising off-road prowess.
The Good

The 2008 GL-Class offered robust performance and luxurious comfort. The spacious cabin and refined ride appealed to those seeking practicality and comfort. Its striking design and prestigious badge satisfied emotional desires for luxury and status. The powerful engine options, though not exceptionally efficient, provided confident acceleration and towing capabilities.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2008 GL-Class include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Air suspension problems are common and can be expensive to repair. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the larger V8 engine. Electrical issues and sensor failures can also occur. Potential buyers should be aware of these potential expenses.

What Problems Does the 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class often revolve around the air suspension system (Airmatic). Components like air struts and the compressor are prone to failure, leading to expensive repairs. Oil leaks, particularly from the engine and transmission, are also common. Electrical issues, including sensor malfunctions (e.g., oxygen sensors, mass airflow sensor), can trigger warning lights and affect performance.

Recalls for the 2008 GL-Class have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks due to faulty fuel filter flanges and problems with the power steering system. Long-term reliability concerns include wear and tear on the interior components, such as the leather upholstery and trim pieces. The navigation system can become outdated and may require expensive updates. Early model years (2007-2008) seem to experience more frequent air suspension and electrical problems than later years. Owners also report issues with the transfer case and differential over time, especially if the vehicle has been used for towing or off-roading.

How long will the 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can reach 200,000 miles or more. However, consistent and meticulous maintenance is crucial. Neglecting scheduled services will significantly reduce its lifespan. The air suspension and electrical systems are common long-term weaknesses. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing any minor issues promptly are essential to maximize durability. Vehicles that have been regularly serviced by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic tend to last longer. Over time, the interior trim and leather can show wear, and the navigation system may become outdated, but the engine and transmission can remain robust if properly maintained.

2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL450 started around $55,000, while the GL550 was priced closer to $75,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The GL-Class has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, higher maintenance costs, and relatively poor fuel economy. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, service history, and any optional features. Models with lower mileage and a documented service record command higher prices. Poorly maintained vehicles or those with high mileage will depreciate further.

2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs are substantial, especially regarding the air suspension and electrical systems. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential major repairs. While the initial purchase price may be lower, the overall cost of ownership can be significantly higher than comparable non-luxury SUVs. Economical, it is not.

2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with vehicles like the Lexus LX 570, Cadillac Escalade, and Land Rover Range Rover. In terms of performance, the GL-Class offers similar power and towing capacity to its rivals. The Lexus LX 570 is known for its superior reliability, while the Cadillac Escalade provides more interior space. The Range Rover offers enhanced off-road capabilities and a more luxurious interior, but often comes with even higher maintenance costs.

Feature-wise, the GL-Class is competitive, offering comparable luxury amenities. However, its technology is now outdated compared to newer models. The Escalade may offer better value for the money in terms of features.

Regarding reliability, the Lexus LX 570 stands out as a more dependable option. If reliability is a primary concern, the Lexus is a better choice. If you need more space, the Escalade is a viable alternative. If off-road capability and a luxurious interior are priorities and you are willing to accept higher maintenance costs, then Range Rover is a similar option. The GL-Class is a decent blend of luxury, capability and space, but its reliability and running costs can be a gamble.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a used luxury SUV with three rows of seating and a prestigious badge, but who are aware of the potential maintenance costs. It's worth buying if you find one in excellent condition with a comprehensive service history and are prepared for higher running expenses. Specific trims like the GL450 can be a more reasonable option than the GL550 due to potentially lower maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic is highly recommended. Be wary of vehicles with deferred maintenance or a history of air suspension problems. Consider newer alternatives if reliability and lower long-term costs are priorities.

One of the best cars to own

The gl 550 that i've owned for a couple years now, has to be one of the best suv out there. From a third row that can fit an over 6 foot adult to the soft adaptive air suspension. The car is actually way to fast for what it is, and up to this day, I put my foot down and its still throws your head with insane acceleration. Sound system, harmon kardon is excellent, I think newer cars are losing base but these surround sounds have thumping bass. The presence of this car, everyone just stares at this car from the biggest three pointed star ever on a mercedes to the amg 21 inch performace wheels and extended fenders. WHAT a car and for the price of around 30k, there is no better three row suv for the money.

Likely the best car I've ever owned.

Highs: Rides like an S-Class (air suspension). Handles better than anything it's size. Strong diesel engine. Excellent interior. Simple infotainment system compared to modern cars. Simple engine systems compared to modern cars. Diesel engine is used all over Europe as a taxi cab (and cars used as taxis tend to be some of the most reliable, because they have to be.) Suspension can be raised; this is useful in Houston when it floods! Lots and lots of room! Lows: Likely will need repairs as it get older/more miles. But, I bought it for only $14k, so what can I expect. Some plastic creaking. But, what can you expect from an older German car? You get something with a sophisticated suspension, but they pay less attention to creaking plastics.

An upscale family hauler

The GL320 was a great vehicle as we pounded it through deep snow in our area in the winter with excellent traction. We filled it with 2 adults and 4 teenagers on long road trips with no trouble. One of the best features it had was ability to crack open the rear quarter windows for car sick rear passengers. The diesel was so so on fuel with 9L/100km but moved the big rig around nicely. We had it for 3 yrs and 65K kms with just a new windshield.
