The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a full-size, three-row luxury SUV known for its spaciousness and opulent features. Part of the second GL-Class generation (2013-2016), it offers a blend of comfort, capability, and prestige. Key trims include the GL350 BlueTEC, GL450, GL550, and the high-performance GL63 AMG. Original pricing ranged from approximately $63,000 to well over $120,000 for the AMG model. It's popular for its luxurious cabin, powerful engine options, and ability to comfortably transport up to seven passengers in style.
The Good

The 2014 GL-Class provides robust performance with various engine options. It offers unparalleled comfort with a luxurious interior and smooth ride. While not the most efficient, the diesel option offers decent fuel economy for its size. Aesthetically, it exudes prestige. For practical buyers, it's a spacious and capable family hauler. For emotional buyers, it offers status and a premium driving experience.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 GL-Class include higher maintenance and repair costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Air suspension issues are a known concern. Some owners have reported electrical problems. Fuel economy, while decent in the diesel, can be poor in the gasoline models. Pre-purchase inspections are crucial.

What Problems Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class often revolve around the air suspension system. Issues range from compressor failures to leaks in the air struts, leading to ride height problems and expensive repairs. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors and problems with the infotainment system, have also been reported by some owners. Oil leaks are another potential concern, particularly as the vehicle ages.

While specific recalls for the 2014 model year can vary, it's important to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Some model years within the GL-Class generation have experienced recalls related to fuel systems or braking components, so thorough research is advised.

Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The air suspension, in particular, is a known weak point. Preventative maintenance, such as regular oil changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating potential problems. High repair costs associated with Mercedes-Benz vehicles should also be factored into the ownership experience. Earlier model years of the GL-Class (first generation) had some issues that were addressed in the second generation, but the inherent complexity of a luxury SUV still presents potential reliability challenges over time.

How long will the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, reaching these figures heavily depends on consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly. The air suspension system remains a significant long-term durability concern. Other potential weaknesses include engine and transmission issues that can arise with high mileage. Rust is generally not a major concern, but inspecting for corrosion in areas prone to moisture is advisable. Proper care significantly impacts longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

Built-in Tech & Entertainment: Standard features include the COMAND infotainment system with a 7-inch display, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and a premium audio system. Optional upgrades include a DVD entertainment system for rear passengers, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Driver-Assistance Features: Standard safety features encompass antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, multiple airbags, and a rearview camera. Optional driver-assistance features available included blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system.

Safety Features:
  • Pre-Safe: Anticipates potential collisions and prepares the vehicle by tightening seatbelts and closing windows.
  • Attention Assist: Monitors driver drowsiness and provides alerts.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class generally received good crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, it's recommended to verify the specific ratings for this model year on the respective agency websites, as results may vary. Overall the vehicle offered a strong suite of safety features and performed well in crash testing for its time.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class ranged from approximately $63,000 for the GL350 BlueTEC to over $120,000 for the GL63 AMG. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $35,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The GL-Class has experienced significant depreciation due to its higher maintenance costs and the availability of newer models. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, maintenance records, condition, and the presence of desirable options. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to the vehicle's value and repair costs. Fuel economy, especially in the gasoline models, is not economical. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, particularly for the air suspension and other complex systems. While the diesel offers slightly better fuel economy, overall, long-term ownership is relatively expensive compared to non-luxury SUVs. Budget accordingly for potential repairs.

How Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with other full-size luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX 570, and Land Rover Range Rover. In terms of performance, the GL-Class offers a range of engine options, with the AMG variant delivering impressive power. The Cadillac Escalade boasts strong towing capability, while the Range Rover excels in off-road performance.

In terms of features, the GL-Class offers a luxurious interior and a comprehensive suite of technology. The Lexus LX 570 is known for its reliability, a potential advantage over the GL-Class. The Infiniti QX80 often provides a more competitive price point.

Regarding reliability, the Lexus LX 570 generally holds an edge. The Range Rover can be prone to reliability issues. Used prices for the GL-Class are often lower than the Lexus, but higher than the Infiniti.

Alternatives to consider include the Acura MDX (for better reliability and value, albeit smaller), or the Lexus GX 460 (for a blend of luxury and reliability with strong off-road capability but a less spacious third row). If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus LX 570 is a compelling alternative, despite its higher price. If value is paramount, the Infiniti QX80 might be a better choice.

A used GL-Class can be a good value if purchased with a thorough pre-purchase inspection, particularly focusing on the air suspension. Consider a GL350 BlueTEC for slightly better fuel economy. Be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. The GL63 AMG is for performance enthusiasts willing to pay a premium. If reliability is a primary concern, alternative brands might be more suitable.

Most comfortable car I have ever owned

I bought a 2014 GL550 based on cargo room, comfort, performance and reliability. This vehicle is quick and has room for seven adults. Easy to get in and out and not too big to park. Powerful twin turbo V8 gets up and goes and has every luxury possible.

Powerful

The cars has great power, you can really feel it at a sstoplight The minute you put your foot on the gas, you are instantly push back into your seat. The ride is smooth and quite. The only nick on this car is that my model year didn't come with a 3rd roll sun shade. Had to go out and spend around $100 for one.

3rd GL!!

This suv is one of the best in the market in terms of reliability, fuel economy and safety. I’ve owned many of them and this is my third one. Highly recommended much better compared to Range Rover, Audi or BMW due to the seating capacity and styling!
