The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a full-size luxury SUV, representing the second generation of the GL platform. Its body style is a spacious three-row SUV designed for families. Model years for this generation ran from 2012-2016. Key trims included the GL350 BlueTEC (diesel), GL450, GL550, and the high-performance GL63 AMG. Original pricing ranged approximately from $62,000 to over $117,000 for the AMG. It stands out for its luxurious interior, comfortable ride, powerful engine options, and genuine off-road capability combined with Mercedes-Benz refinement.
The Good

The 2012 GL-Class offers a blend of luxury and capability. Emotionally, buyers appreciate its prestige, powerful engines, and opulent interior. Practically, it delivers a comfortable ride, spacious seating for seven, available 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and a refined driving experience. While not the most efficient, its diesel option provides better fuel economy than its gasoline counterparts. Overall, it provides a premium SUV experience.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 GL-Class include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Air suspension issues are relatively common and can be expensive to repair. Some owners have reported electrical problems. Fuel economy, especially in the gasoline models, is not a strong point. Prospective buyers should have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic specializing in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

What Problems Does the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class often revolve around the air suspension system. Compressor failures, leaks in the air struts, and related sensor issues can be costly to repair. Electrical glitches, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the COMAND system, are also reported with some frequency. Oil leaks from various engine seals are another area of concern as the vehicle ages.
Recalls for the 2012 GL-Class have addressed issues like potential fuel filter flange leaks and problems with the power steering system. Owners should check with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) or Mercedes-Benz to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability is generally considered average for a luxury SUV. Proper and consistent maintenance is crucial to preventing major issues. The diesel engine in the GL350 BlueTEC can be susceptible to issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and AdBlue injection system, especially with predominantly short-trip driving. The complexity of the vehicle's systems, especially the air suspension and electronics, contributes to higher potential repair costs over time. Regular servicing and preventative maintenance are essential to mitigate these risks. It's important to note that earlier model year GL-Class vehicles (pre-2012) had some engine balance shaft issues, but this was generally addressed before the 2012 model year.

How long will the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service or last beyond 10-15 years. The longevity depends heavily on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule and addressing minor issues promptly.
Long-term durability hinges on the condition of the air suspension, the transmission, and the engine. Weaknesses include potential corrosion in areas with harsh winters, wear and tear on interior components, and the aforementioned issues with the air suspension and electrical systems. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant) are crucial for extending the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class boasts a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include the COMAND infotainment system with a central display, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and mbrace telematics system. Entertainment options include a Harman Kardon Logic7 surround sound system and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens (optional).
Driver-assistance features available as options include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control (Distronic Plus), and parking sensors. The GL-Class includes standard safety features such as antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a full complement of airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA provide insights into the vehicle's safety performance. While specific ratings for the 2012 model year should be consulted on their respective websites, the GL-Class generally performed well in crash tests for its class and era. Features like Attention Assist, which monitors driver alertness, further enhance safety. The COMAND system allows access to navigation, audio controls, and vehicle settings. Optional features could significantly enhance the tech and safety aspects of the GL-Class.

2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class had a new price range from approximately $62,000 to over $117,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level, generally ranging from $12,000 to $25,000.
Depreciation has been significant, typical for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's maintenance history, overall condition, mileage, and the presence of desirable options (like the premium sound system or driver-assistance features). Models with a clean title and documented service records command higher prices. Higher mileage and deferred maintenance will significantly reduce resale value. The GL63 AMG will typically hold its value better than the other trims due to its performance credentials and rarity.

2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its luxury status and potential repair costs. Fuel consumption, especially for the gasoline engines, is significant. Maintenance and repair expenses are also elevated compared to non-luxury vehicles, particularly with the air suspension and complex electronics. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential major repairs. The diesel model offers slightly better fuel economy but may incur higher maintenance costs related to its emissions system. Overall, it's not an economical choice.

2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle MPV with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with other luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, Audi Q7, and BMW X5. In terms of performance, the GL-Class offers a range of engine options, with the GL63 AMG providing superior acceleration. Features are comparable across the segment, with the GL-Class offering a luxurious interior and advanced technology. However, reliability is an area where some rivals, particularly the Audi Q7 (depending on the engine) and Lexus GX 460 (though smaller), might have an edge. Price-wise, the GL-Class was positioned similarly to its competitors when new, and used prices reflect its depreciation.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Audi Q7: Offers a more modern interior and potentially better reliability (depending on engine and model year).
  • BMW X5: Provides a sportier driving experience, but third-row seating is less spacious.
  • Cadillac Escalade: Offers bolder styling and a more truck-like feel, with ample space.
  • Lexus GX 460: Smaller than the GL-Class, but it has excellent reliability and off-road capability.
For buyers prioritizing reliability, the Lexus GX 460 is a strong contender, though it lacks the space of the GL-Class. The Audi Q7 offers a blend of luxury and technology. Each alternative presents a trade-off between luxury, performance, reliability, and price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious, spacious SUV with comfortable seating for seven and a prestigious badge. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you prioritize luxury and capability over long-term affordability and are prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs.
The GL350 BlueTEC offers the best fuel economy, while the GL550 and GL63 AMG provide exhilarating performance. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic is essential. Pay close attention to the condition of the air suspension and review the service history thoroughly. If reliability is a top priority, other alternatives in its class may be a better fit. Buying from a reputable dealer or private seller with meticulous maintenance records is highly recommended.

A/C Compressor fail after 21,000 miles

Not long enough and don’t have enough legs room . Expensive to fix . Other than that, everything else are great. Will not buy another Mercedes-Benz again due to 4 years or 50,000 warranty.

Extremely reliable and very practical.

The three rows of seating is everything I need for 4 adults and our 3 grandchildren. I also use this for commuting to work and it is great in the snow.

So far we are quite impressed

The GL 550 is a very nice alternative to the big GM SUVs. The ride is better, the utilization of space is better, and the level of trim detail is significantly better.

SUV that is a Priviledge to drive

Found this 2012 GL 550 with 33K miles. Have had it a week and put about a 1,000 miles on it. Paid about 27K for it. This has to be the bargain of the century. Have owned and driven lots of luxury vehicles, but this is in another class all together. Would someone tell me why I would want to buy a new compact car vs. this 'world class' vehicle for the same price?
