The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, later rebranded as the GLS, is a full-size luxury SUV designed to offer both opulence and practicality. Produced from 2006-2019 (GL) before the name change, the 2016 model offered trims like GL350 BlueTEC, GL450, GL550, and the AMG GL63. New pricing ranged from approximately $65,000 to over $120,000. Its spacious three-row seating and luxurious features made it a popular choice for families seeking comfort and prestige.
The Good

The 2016 GL-Class boasts powerful engine options providing robust performance, plus a comfortable and luxurious ride. Its appealing design and brand prestige cater to emotional buyers, while its spaciousness, advanced safety features, and available diesel engine (for better fuel economy) attract practical buyers. However, reliability can be a concern.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include higher running costs due to complex systems and expensive repairs. Air suspension issues are common, leading to costly fixes. Also, electrical problems and malfunctions of the many electronic features can occur. Prospective buyers should prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection and be prepared for potentially high maintenance bills.

What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, while luxurious, has some frequently reported problems. Air suspension issues are prevalent, leading to sagging, failure to adjust, and costly repairs. Electrical problems are also common, including malfunctions with the COMAND system, sensors, and other electronic components. Oil leaks, particularly around the engine and transmission, are another area of concern. Some owners have reported issues with the turbocharger in the diesel models.

Specific to the 2016 model year (and surrounding years of the X166 chassis), some owners have reported issues with the fuel system, specifically fuel pump failures. Recalls have been issued for various GL-Class models over the years, addressing issues like fuel filter flange cracking, seat belt pretensioner malfunctions, and potential steering system failures.

Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle and the expensive parts required for repairs. Prospective buyers should carefully review the vehicle's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic specializing in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Addressing any potential issues early on can help mitigate more significant problems down the road.

How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Years of service often depend on driving conditions and maintenance adherence.

Long-term durability can be affected by air suspension and electrical system weaknesses. The engine and transmission are generally robust if serviced regularly, but neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten their lifespan. Rust can become a factor in colder climates where road salt is used. Preventative maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly are key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

very pleased with the service. Customer service is very friendly and helpful. Maggie is our go to representative, if she isn't around, we feel that the staff is just as helpful and courteous. It is also great how they appreciate the military (discount on services). We feel that they are honest. it is very easy to book appointments (online or phone) Would definitely recommend!

We recently bought a GL 450. It is packed with so many features I didn’t even know existed. I love driving now. Even my kids who do not like to sit very long love going for rides in the car. It is so spacious. I also feel so safe driving it which is a huge plus for me considering my last car was totaled from a drunk driver hitting me (hence why we got a new car). I would not recommend this vehicle to someone who doesn’t need a big car because it is huge! I love all the space though.

Bought used end of ‘16 thankfully. Sticker over $100k, paid $80,000, sold in 10/2019 for $36,000. Burned through Continental Tires every 15k miles. Suspension problem at 48k miles that was “sorry your warranty doesn’t cover this!” Ouch, $800 repair. Overrated counterintuitive electronics and voice control. A fast V8 SUV, heavy and safe At 15mpg.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class comes equipped with a range of built-in tech and safety features. The COMAND infotainment system features a central display screen, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity. Entertainment options include a premium sound system. Standard driver-assistance features include a rearview camera, crosswind assist, and collision prevention assist.

Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist. A surround-view camera system was also available.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class ranged from around $65,000 for the GL350 BlueTEC to over $120,000 for the AMG GL63. Current used market prices vary widely based on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from $20,000 to $45,000.

The GL-Class has experienced significant depreciation due to its luxury status and potential for expensive repairs. Factors affecting resale value include a clean title, documented maintenance history, low mileage, and desirable options. The AMG GL63 tends to hold its value better due to its performance credentials.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel economy, especially for the GL550 and AMG GL63, is poor. Maintenance and repairs are expensive due to the complexity of the vehicle and the cost of parts. Long-term ownership can be financially demanding, especially if unexpected issues arise. The diesel GL350 offers slightly better fuel economy, but repair costs can still be significant.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX 570, and Audi Q7. In terms of performance, the AMG GL63 is hard to beat, offering blistering acceleration. Features are generally comparable across the class, with the GL-Class offering a luxurious and tech-rich environment. However, reliability is where the GL-Class often falls short compared to the Lexus LX 570, which is known for its dependability. The Cadillac Escalade offers similar space and towing capacity, but its interior quality might not match the Mercedes. The Range Rover provides a more upscale image but can also be less reliable.

Price-wise, the GL-Class is generally competitive, although repair costs can be higher than some rivals. For buyers prioritizing reliability, the Lexus LX 570 is a better alternative. For those seeking a blend of luxury and practicality with potentially lower maintenance costs, the Audi Q7 (especially newer models) can be a compelling choice. If towing and space are paramount, and reliability is less of a concern, the Escalade is also worth considering.

Ranks #572 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a spacious and luxurious three-row SUV with powerful engine options and a prestigious badge. However, it's worth buying *only* if you're prepared for potentially high maintenance costs. Purchasing a well-maintained, lower-mileage example with a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The GL450 offers a good balance of performance and features. The diesel GL350 provides better fuel economy but can still be costly to repair. The AMG GL63 is for enthusiasts willing to pay a premium for performance. Avoid models with a history of air suspension or electrical problems. Consider extended warranty options to mitigate potential repair expenses.

Great car, but poor quality

I have been driving a GL 350 for 12 years. (-) After approx 10 years, repair costs went up significantly. Had to re-do all air suspension system. Also the automatic trunk lid had to be repaired 3 times. Lots of other parts as well. Times when a Mercedes would make a million km and continue to be driven in Africa are over. (-) connectivity to smart phones is a drama (-) Back seats are not comfortable. (+) great driving, highly secure even at high speeds (+) I love the exterior design (+) impressive performance, off and on road

What I expected and meeting my needs

The GL450 is a roomy vehicle with a usable 3rd row that quickly folds away flush into the floor for spacious cargo room. The car is stable on smooth roads and comfortable, potholes, man-hole covers and other obstacles in the road can cause the suspension to jump around a little more than expected...the rear will jump over a few inches one way or another, but overall it drives well. Acceleration isn't what it used to be with the larger twin turbo V-8, but it's still very respectable. The biggest advantage and worth the trade-off is the much improved fuel economy. Front seating is sufficient, not spectacular though...I've take a few 700 plus mile trips and I'm happy with the comfort level, just wish the front seat bases could tilt a little higher in the front. Gauges and instruments and radio are easy to use and fall within reach...the temperature controls could be a little more modern for a 2016 instead of the rotary dial...but they work. NOT a fan of the transmission shifting on the column...it frees up the center console, but it's easy to confuse early on with blinkers, wipers, etc. The seats are heated but at this price, they should also be ventilated/cooled. I haven't had it long enough for reliability, but from what I've read it's decent. Towing capacity is 7500

AMG performance in Affordable Package

Traded up from a 2012 Mercedes ML350 4Matic to a 2016 GL550 4Matic. Twin turbo V8 delivers smooth and quick AMG power across the powerband, snappy passing; excellent long distance highway driver and amazing performance in snow. Cabin space is full of supple leather with subtle wood accents and tasteful accent lighting. Controls are sensible and in keeping with most Mercedes models, steering is precise and responsive. Compared to my present and past G500s the GL is a welcome change to a sport SUV cruiser with improved torque and towing power. Still under warranty and performing flawlessly.
