The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a full-size, three-row luxury SUV known for its spaciousness and opulent features. Part of the second generation (2013-2016), it offers a blend of comfort and capability. Key trims include the GL350 BlueTEC (diesel), GL450, GL550, and the high-performance GL63 AMG. Original pricing ranged from approximately $63,000 to over $120,000 for the AMG variant. Its luxurious interior, refined ride, and seating for seven contribute to its popularity.
The Good

The 2013 GL-Class excels in performance with powerful engine options and a smooth ride. Its luxurious cabin provides exceptional comfort, appealing to emotional buyers seeking prestige. Practically, its spaciousness and towing capacity make it a versatile family vehicle. While not the most efficient, the diesel option offers respectable fuel economy. The commanding design also adds to its appeal.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2013 GL-Class include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Air suspension issues can be a concern, requiring expensive repairs. Some owners report electronic glitches and issues with the diesel engine (if equipped). Pre-purchase inspections are crucial to identify potential problems before buying, especially concerning the air suspension system.

What Problems Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class often involve the air suspension system. Issues range from compressor failures to air leaks, leading to ride height problems and costly repairs. Electronic glitches, such as malfunctions with the infotainment system or sensor errors, are also reported. The diesel engine (GL350 BlueTEC) can experience issues with the AdBlue system (diesel exhaust fluid) and related sensors.

While recalls are specific to certain VINs and should be checked on the NHTSA website, some model years within this generation have had recalls related to fuel system components, airbags, and electrical systems. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The air suspension, in particular, tends to degrade over time, especially in regions with harsh climates or road conditions. Oil leaks and coolant leaks can also become more prevalent as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate these issues. Before purchasing, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

A 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, with consistent maintenance, can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Good maintenance habits are key. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses surface over time. The air suspension remains the most significant concern, requiring replacement of components as they age and wear. Regular oil changes, transmission services, and coolant flushes are crucial to maintaining engine and drivetrain health. Rust can be a factor in areas with road salt, so undercarriage washes are recommended. The key to longevity is preventative maintenance.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class had a new MSRP ranging from approximately $63,000 to over $120,000 depending on the trim. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation is significant due to the high initial cost and luxury SUV market trends. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage and documented maintenance records command higher prices. The AMG variants tend to hold their value better than the standard models.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its value and repair costs. Fuel consumption, especially for the non-diesel models, can be significant. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, particularly for the air suspension and complex electronic systems. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential major repairs. While the diesel offers slightly better fuel economy, overall, it's not an economical vehicle to own.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle MPV with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with the Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX 570, Infiniti QX80, and Land Rover Range Rover. In terms of performance, the GL-Class offers a range of powerful engines, but the Escalade might offer comparable power at a slightly lower price point. Feature-wise, the GL-Class is well-equipped, but the Range Rover offers more off-road capability and a similarly luxurious interior. Reliability is a concern, as the Lexus LX 570 is known for its superior reliability compared to the GL-Class.

Price-wise, the GL-Class is competitive within its class, but used models can be more expensive to maintain than some rivals. Alternatives to consider include the Lexus LX 570 for reliability, the Cadillac Escalade for value, or the Acura MDX (though smaller) for a more fuel-efficient and reliable option. The Infiniti QX80 offers a similar size and features at a potentially lower used price, but with similar reliability concerns. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities.

Ranks #604 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers needing a spacious, luxurious SUV with three-row seating and towing capability. It's worth buying used if a pre-purchase inspection reveals a well-maintained vehicle with no major issues, particularly with the air suspension. Specific trims to consider are the GL350 BlueTEC for better fuel economy or the GL450 for a balance of performance and features. However, be prepared for higher maintenance costs. If reliability is a top priority, consider alternatives like the Lexus LX 570. Buying new is not an option as the model year is 2013. Only buy if you are prepared for the financial commitment of maintaining a luxury SUV.

Best top of the line car I've own so far.

This truck looks like a beast but runs and handles like a full size sports car. The air suspension works great when its packed with all our camping gear. This truck is sharp enough for a black tie event and tough enough to go camping. Very happy with my truck.

Love my GL450

This has been a great vehicle for a family of 5 with 3 in car seats. Looked at all the SUV’s out there and the GL was the best combination of safety, style, features, price / value and driveability.

No hassle ownership experience

Bought a 2013 GL 350 bluetec with 60,000 miles, and despite the horror stories I read on the internet about nonstop expensive repairs, my experience has been great in the first six months. And of course it drives and feels great, it has the coveted teutonic feel, great gas mileage.
