Rating: 4.51
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a mid-size sedan, part of the seventh generation (B7) Passat launched in 2011 specifically for the North American market. Key trims included the S, SE, Wolfsburg Edition, and SEL. Known for its spacious rear seats, comfortable ride, and ample trunk space, the Passat appealed to families. The original MSRP ranged approximately from $21,000 to $34,000 depending on the trim and engine. Its roomy interior and focus on comfort were strong selling points.
The Good

The 2014 Passat offers a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers needing family transportation. Strong points include its fuel efficiency (especially with the TDI diesel), and solid build quality. Emotionally, the Passat offers a taste of German engineering and a refined driving experience at an accessible price point.

The Bad

Some potential weaknesses in the 2014 Passat include reported issues with the infotainment system, and potential for oil consumption in some engines. Early models of this generation have been noted to have some electrical gremlins. Also, while reliable, certain components can be more expensive to repair than domestic rivals. Check for proper maintenance history.

What Problems Does the 2014 Volkswagen Passat Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Volkswagen Passat include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or failing to connect to devices. Some owners have also reported problems with the air conditioning system, particularly with the compressor failing. Oil consumption, especially in the earlier 2.5L inline-5 engines, has been a concern for some owners. There have been reports of electrical issues, including problems with power windows and door locks. Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including fuel pump failures and airbag-related concerns; it's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to verify recall status. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around potential DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) transmission issues in TDI models, though generally the reliability of the diesel engine itself is considered quite good. Regularly check for any warning lights and address them promptly to prevent long-term damage. Thorough inspection and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic are highly recommended.

How long will the 2014 Volkswagen Passat last?

With good maintenance, a 2014 Volkswagen Passat can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone with proper care. However, long-term durability can be affected by maintenance habits. Neglecting routine maintenance, such as oil changes and fluid checks, can lead to premature wear and tear. Weaknesses over time can include suspension components wearing out, particularly in areas with rough roads. The timing chain (especially in the 1.8T) should be inspected as it can become a costly repair if neglected. The longevity of the transmission, regardless of engine, largely depends on fluid changes at specified intervals. Rust can be an issue in areas with salted roads, so regular washing and waxing are crucial.

Elliot
2.5 stars is more accurate because it’s a 50/50 car. I bought one used around 100k miles no accidents. Did it look nice? Yes. Was it comfortable? Yes. Beautiful interior, nice and sleek exterior and a car that gets pretty good gas mileage, all things you looks for. Here’s where we went wrong: The internals. Sure this car performs great when it’s running, and that’s what suckers you into buying it with ease. But after a short amount of time owning it, timing chain goes out. Learned this was a common issue and while it was a pain (and expensive) it was manageable. Well then it starts leaking oil so you fix that. Then the turbo starts cooking off oil and breaks. Before you know it the engine goes and now you’re 7k in repairs on a car you probably paid 15k or less for. To make my personal situation worse I totaled it within a month of it finally running like when I first bought it. It’s a buy at your own risk. Me personally? Not worth it and comes with plenty of issues and expensive repairs. At the same time, I’ll miss it. It’s arguably one of the more comfortable, nicer looking, and higher performing (when running) sedans on the market. Buy at your own risk.
Gwen
Have had my beauty since 2014 and it's still a head turner. With over 110,000 miles, it still runs like brand new! I have never had issues with anything mechanical and have only had the one air bag recall.
Phyllis
Met all my expectations. Beautiful smart looking car. Rides nice. Trunk spacious. Legg room in back seats. Clean interior as if brand new. Dash is clean. The dealer buffed out one scratch and although the car had hail storm indentations you would have to look very close to see them.
Negative Owner Reviews
MJ
I bought a 2014 VW Passat and it broke down in the first week. I have put $4,500 in it for repairs and it is still overheating. This is the worst car I have ever had!!!!!
Richard007
worst car I ever owned don't waste your money on German junk you be in the repair shop getting this car fixed over and over again for the same thing.
Damien M
I love the car, just got taken advantage of by the dealership. Be careful with what they sell you inside of there. Check engine light already on, brakes were bad, front speaker is already cracking, need an oil change already, less than 1000 miles in. Scratches and dents across the driver side door and passenger door.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat features a standard CD player with auxiliary input, and available touchscreen infotainment systems (depending on the trim). Higher trims included features like a premium Fender audio system. Driver-assistance features were limited but could include a rearview camera and parking sensors on higher trims. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain). Optional features included a sunroof, navigation system, and keyless entry/start.

In crash testing, the 2014 Passat performed well. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The IIHS ratings include good scores in moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seat tests. While not equipped with advanced features like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking standard on newer cars, the Passat offered a solid level of safety for its time. The availability of features like blind-spot monitoring would depend on the specific trim and options selected when the vehicle was new.

2014 Volkswagen Passat Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Volkswagen Passat had an MSRP ranging from around $21,000 to $34,000, depending on the trim and engine. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for most mid-size sedans. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and trim level. TDI models, if well-maintained, may hold their value slightly better due to their fuel efficiency. Clean title and a full service record also boost resale value.

2014 Volkswagen Passat Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Passat are generally moderate, aligning with other mid-size sedans. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the TDI diesel is the most economical, while the VR6 is the least. Maintenance costs can be slightly higher than some domestic rivals, especially for specialized parts. Repairs can be more expensive if using a dealership or specialist mechanic. Overall, the 2014 Passat is reasonably economical to own, especially the 1.8T and TDI models, provided that regular maintenance is performed and potential issues are addressed promptly.

2014 Volkswagen Passat Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Volkswagen Passat is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Volkswagen Passat Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Passat offers a more spacious rear seat but may lag slightly in long-term reliability (though the TDI models are arguably quite reliable). The Fusion offers similar styling and driving dynamics, while the Malibu is often a more budget-friendly option. In terms of features, the Passat is generally comparable, though some rivals may offer more advanced technology. For performance, the VR6 Passat is a standout, offering more power than most rivals' V6 options.

Alternatives: If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are excellent choices. If you prefer a sportier driving experience, consider the Ford Fusion. If budget is a major concern, the Chevrolet Malibu can be a good option. The Passat excels in offering a comfortable and spacious interior with a touch of German engineering, but its long-term reliability may not match the Camry or Accord.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is ideal for families needing a spacious and comfortable mid-size sedan. It's a worthwhile purchase, especially on the used market, if you prioritize a roomy interior and a smooth ride over ultimate reliability. The TDI diesel models are particularly appealing for their fuel efficiency. Consider the 1.8T for a balance of performance and economy. Look for well-maintained examples with complete service records. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to identify any potential issues. Avoid models with a history of neglected maintenance or significant electrical problems. If seeking ultimate peace of mind, a Camry or Accord might be a better choice, but the Passat offers a unique blend of comfort and value.

I bought a 2014 VW Passat and it broke down in the first

I bought a 2014 VW Passat and it broke down in the first week. I have put $4,500 in it for repairs and it is still overheating. This is the worst car I have ever had!!!!!

I bought a 2014 VW Passat SE in 2014 Brand New.

I bought a 2014 VW Passat SE in 2014 Brand New. I have done all the recommended maintenance on the car since I bought it and I have never had it break on me. I just hit 100k last month. I was driving down the highway a few weeks ago and I hit what appeared to be a piece of concrete or asphalt in the road. It made a loud thud under my car and I immediately lost power and the car turned off. I had it towed to the dealership. Whatever I hit took out my fuel pump that is inside the gas tank. They charged me $2100 to fix it. So I can tell you first hand these cars are reliable if you do all the maintenance like you are supposed to. But when they do Break, they cost way more than they should to fix them!

A real diesel for longevity with proper maintenanc

To all the "whiners" out there (detailing mechanical issues) "after" 100,000 miles. You don't let ANY brand of car go without "scheduled maintenance at or around 90-100,000 miles. Look at your maintenance book that came with the car. (ALL) cars have an expensive scheduled maintenance plan. If you buy a new 2024 its gonna have a $100-300 inspection and a mechanic bill of $150-175/Hr labor before parts. Some of you sound like you're suppose to be able to buy a perfect car that will never need maintenance. Really??? sheeesh. Buy an extended warranty and a new(er) car. You're the worst kind of driver to review any car. This brand is often nicknamed the "million mile" car bc it can go that far with "scheduled maintenance" of the engine wear items and oil changes. Can your Honda or Hydaui go that far??? I challenge you as a 4 VW car owner from the 2006-2014 to beat this brand of engine on highway mpg and engine longevity. Go do your homework and stop whining. My 2006 VW diesel still going at 325,000 and my 2014 Passat Tdi still going at 147,000 with the engine pistons and rings just getting seated at 90000-100,000 miles. You don't know what that means but as a diesel tech I can tell you it means it just getting its first break in period on its longevity of the engine parts. Farfenugen baby. Go VW!!!

Buy at your own risk

Good car, but not reliable.

I bought 2014 passat four years ago and was driving for a while. During that time, i had to fix such a lots of things. Everytime I went to volkawagen center, they required 200 dollors to test what's wrong there. Then I spend more than 3000 dollors during that time, but sometimes not everything was fixed.

Still the One

Have had my beauty since 2014 and it's still a head turner. With over 110,000 miles, it still runs like brand new! I have never had issues with anything mechanical and have only had the one air bag recall.

Costly repairs, poor design

Too many problems to list. Timing chain jumped a couple teeth causing catastrophic engine failure. No check engine light to warn of impending doom. This is a very very common issue with the passat which is known by VW and they refuse to address it. I was a VW/Audi tech for 7 yrs and have lost faith in this brand. Complete junk.

One of most comfortable with power

This is the German car having all German qualities, comfort, performance and reliability. Another best thing is it's a cheaper than other German companies like BMW, AUDI etc. I am so glad i am driving this volkswagen, it's so roomy, it's business class car, which can take care of any family. Back seats are really spacious like business class, having really roomy trunck. It's a 1.8 turbo engine ,which handle the power really quick and smooth. Handling is so smooth and accurate, it act so confidently on corners, it's a really long sedan but it feel like really small when you drive. It's really reliable, i got zero dollar investment in last 8 months ,except oil change. Thanks.
